  1. Lake Okeechobee was dammed in 1937 to help with flood control. It is a shallow lake that used to filter off into the everglades. As more of the everglades were turned into sugar cane fields they used canals to move the water instead of wetlands thus making filtration minimum at best. They then started discharging it down the Kissimmee River which runs quickly to the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting blooms of green algae were kill zones in the river and as it got into the Gulf it makes red algae blooms. The State of Florida is trying to release water much in the way Lake Nippissing does to lower the water gradually in the fall or spring to make room for more rain as they go into the rain season. This is not a new issue and this happens all over the place from New York to Florida where chemical intrusions occur.

this same factory is the one that destroyed lake okechobe a few years ago right? Politicians down there getting lobbied to allow this company to dump that fertilizer in the water ways...good stuff.

lets just say im glad I live in Canada where we dont let corporations destroy our fresh water resources at a price. If you can believe it, they still "spray" weeds down there. We used to allow that kinda stuff up here too, im glad we dont anymore.

The factory is closed now but the clean up continues from the contamination in the soil. Rain and storms have continued to escape the containment barriers and other methods in effect. The solution is dilution but this is a political minefield and both sides have dug in for the battle. With the differences of ground composition and water stratus what works up North does not work Down South.

  3. The red tide is actually not something that is new. It is not weather related but rather from over abundance of nutrients. " 215 million gallons of nitrogen-rich wastewater made its way into the bay earlier this year from the site of an old fertilizer plant, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The algae feed on phosphorus and nitrogen."  The Florida conservation core has been working with the holding lakes and trying not to draw them down unless they are full from to much rain. This water used to flow through the everglades and nature filtered it out before it bloomed. With Big Sugar using more of the land for Sugar Cane the filtering has become to low to cure the issue. They are trying to return more of the land back to being the filter but it will take time and effort to make the red and green algae blooms go away.

What is dead water? I’ve heard that term before but not sure what it means.

Fish relate to many factors and finding two or more of them will be considered productive water meaning there are fish there to catch if they are feeding. Dead water is where you have one or less factors and no fish are in the area. It could be no structure, wrong temperature, no weed lines, or other factors. Every place and species have their preference as to where they are comfortable.

  6. This might help you decide o what it will do.

To calculate how long a battery will run a motor, let’s have a look at an average setup:

    • 30 lb thrust Minn Kota trolling motor – max 30 amp draw
    • 35 amp hour (Ah) AGM battery
    • and a 50 Ah battery as well
Amps drawn Runtime with 35 Ah Runtime with 50 Ah
Speed setting Max Medium Low Max Medium Low Max Medium Low
    30 lb trolling motor 30 amps 15 amps 5 amps 1.2 hours 2.3 hours 6 hours 1.7 hours 3.3 hours 10 hours

The table above will give you an idea of how long a 30 lb trolling motor will run with a 35 Ah and a 50 Ah battery at various speeds.

Running the motor at full speed will draw 30 amps per hour, draining the battery in a little more than an hour.

Running the motor at half speed will draw 15 amps per hour, meaning you will get 2:20 minutes runtime.

Running the motor at the lowest speed setting will draw 5 amps per hour, so you will get 7 hours of run time.

    That’s not that bad!

How silly does it get when sites ban that word. You can't even post a well known website that has the letters in order in a longer word.

For some silly reason we have adults who us the word as a cuss word. This means women, children, and people who just plain don't want to see vulgarity who are on the site have to read them. We are a family site and wish to encourage people to fish, learn and support the great outdoors that Canada has to offer.

  8. Ok, to explain what you are seeing.... there was a new feature release for our forum software that allows you to display thumbnails for posts IF they contain a picture.  The idea here is that pictures encourage user engagement and ultimately lead to a more active community.  Someone who might not have visited or read a post will sometimes see a picture that captures there interest and so they click to see more and engage.  Avatars are still there just on the right side:

This is something that we are testing..... so any and all feedback is encouraged.  If we don't like this or we don't think it will help engage more user participation then we can simply disable this feature.
