  1. Started using Power pro 12 or 13 yrs ago when it was first brought up to Canada and we were part of the team. That was my first introduction to braid. I stuck with it for many years, then switched to Tuf-line.

Since I have tried them all at one point or another. Really liked the P-line braid for a while and Spider Thread. Tried all the newer line as well except for Nanofil as of yet in open water.

Couple years back I returned to Tuf-line. Very good quality, great variety and a great price point.

Give it a shot one time.

  2. Check out this new leader that may help you hook up with some of those finicky Lake O pike. Very new to the market, I sold out very fast, but have more on order and coming soon.coming soon.

Small diameter and you can tie it directly to the hook. Pike guys out west bought it all up.

  3. The new Okuma Raw II reels were designed for salt water but have become very popular in Europe and the UK with Pike anglers.

They are starting to catch on here too. The 65 & 80 size may be what you are looking for.

Have an eye - Okuma Raw II 65 & 80

Here is a small video about them - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Eb8d7iv4Go&feature=player_detailpage

If you think they may be fakes using the Rapala name, let Normark Canada know. I am sure they would be happy to hear about it.

  4. I bought my present house private and off of Kijiji believe it or not. The Owner was thinking the same as you with lots of time to sell. He put it up, I bought it the next day and there was four others wanting to see it.

Sure it depends on location/price etc. but this displays there are folks out there not afraid to buy private.

I got an inspection, lawyer drew up the papers, done deal. Easy peasie and a great deal.

I know when I sell, I will try private first for sure. I say go for it.

  5. When I think about the posts I remember from your Dad, the main thing I recall is how proud he was when he talked about his son and his job in the fishing dept. at Sail. There was no mistaking how proud he was.

I know it hurts like heck right now, I lost my Dad too recently. I am a PM away anytime.

  6. Anders Jonn is giveing you great advise .. I charge competitively for a guy with a boat etc. like mine , I did not last 30 years by being CHEAP , nor do I over charge . After you add up , GAS , LOST TACKLE , INSURENCE , LICENCES , CHUCK NORIS HOOK SETS THE SMASH RODS ON TO FLY BRIDGE 200 $ + "IM SORRY" down the drain , HAD A GUY FALL OUT OF THE BOAT ON A TRIP "YOU NEED GOOD INSURENCE" , and I have a family that expects me to MAKE A LIVEING . I ALLWAYS try to give a trip that I WOULD PAY FOR .. I never price myself SHORT , if I did WHY WOULD people go out on my boat , for a cheap ride ???? or a good competitively priced safe time . I win customers NOT BY BEING CHEAP , but by doing what they PAID for and doing it well .... Listen to JONN he is doing well in one of the most competitive fisheres in the province ..

    Well said Bruce.

  7. this question to the other downrigger guys. watching ol Dave mercer last night downrigging on WFN and he was using 200# power pro as his downrigger cable. anyone know why?

It has a thinner diameter, therefore it cuts and has less of a bow in the line. Follows the boat nicely.

bounced bottom a few time with it last year, no problem.

  8. Huge topic. Even the few questions asked could elicit paragraphs...

Not passing you off, but there is a certain site that will help you in your quest to become an educated "spoonpuller" :whistling: It's where I got most of my answers when going through the process that you are now. Good place to buy used equipment too, to help keep the crazy costs down when setting up a boat for the first time.

    Good luck!

    Good Advice!

We can go for a coffee too if you like. We're not far.

  9. Boombap, below is my braid setups.

30lb braid for spinnerbaits, topwaters, and basically any other horizontal type baits where you are casting. However now I have gone back to 17lb mono or fluorocarbon when throwing the above.

50lb or 65lb braid is what I use for topwater frog fishing in heavy cover.

    50lb for flipping and pitching

80lb for punching slop mats and dunking thick weedbeds.

You didn't ask about spinning, but I go with straight 20lb, doesn't matter what I am throwing when I use braid.

Backlashes are due to user error mostly. In time they slow down, but never go away. I still get them, especially when there is a camera boat around or some folks watching from shore :)

    Good Luck,

    Phil

  10. Salus suits are comfortable and very well made right here in ontario. I have owned one for two years and love it. They are a little pricier but well worth it.

Another big thumbs up for SALUS

....my opinion the best out there I own an odessy class suit and a sar 770 vest and i am religious about using them just remember you get what you pay for as far as the one piece i wear a t shirt and underware in any weather condition at all and stay toasty warm

    m2 cents

I really don't understand why more people don't buy Salus. :wallbash:

A great Ontario company. Very high quality.

Anyone have a contact to get a salus suit for a good price?

Think part of the problem is they aren't sold in as many locations as the Mustangs or Helly Hansens. Perhaps they need a better marketing team??

Salus tends to sell more to ocean-boaters than inshore. Not sure why. Their stuff is supposedly amazing.

I have a helly hansen alpha and it's great too. Highly recommended.

I find float suits to be heavy. They are also cumbersome.I picked up a Helly Hanson I find it heavy.I looked at the Salus after the fact. The Salus is half the weight and is a bit more flexible .Just my 2 cents.

I did a quick "Salus" search and came up with these posts. I am thinking I made the right choice! Awesome quality and they are Canadian.

eTackle.ca now stocks Salus float suits. Just a heads up if you are still looking.

    Phil
