  1. black line would be more visible to the fish than the light green line
  2. Congrats you got yourself one great boat
  3. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the kid from Pittsburgh Sid Crosby
  4. Anyone know if and where they are sold in the USA?
  5. I have a Basscat. No question it is a great fishing boat but it won't do much more than 70mph.
  6. Brian I will e-mail you later. Good to see you here it is a great site and you can pick up a lot of good info. Being I don't get up there much anymore I will let you in on a few of my secret spots Phil
  7. It is a very shallow lake with a lot of good weeds. Most of the lake is in the 10 foot range, however, there is a nice 30 -35 foot trough that runs just off the east shoreline between the big rockface and the island. The south end of the trough peters out but has a nice area of rocks where you might be able to pick up a few smallmouth. The north end of the trough has some structure with weeds that jumps around from 10 to 20 feet with soft bottom. The rockface itself falls off to 15 foot. Supposedly a good muskie area but I have never done to well there. The island has a very nice rocky area on it's north side, another good smallmouth area. The second smaller rockface to the north also drops off to 15 foot and I have taken several muskie there. Most coming on jerkbaits. It is a small area and with one good drift you can cover the whole thing. Just to the south of this rockface there is a hump made up of rocks. A couple of rocks can catch a prop but they are usually marked. Good smallmouth area. I target muskie but have taken several nice largemouth. On the rare occasion we went for bass we caught several small smallmouth but never a good one. Muskie can be found anywhere. The mid-lake weed beds are productive and as Joonmoon suggested topwaters just before and after dark can be very productive. Probably, most of the muskie taken in Elephant are caught trolling spinners and spinnerbaits. Don't be afraid to fish shallow shoreline areas , 2 to 3 foot, after dark. Spinners are a good choice and will also pick up some nice largemouth. Elephant Lake lodge would be a good place for lunch. You can tie up at the dock and go up for a bite to eat or a cold one. They can probably give you a heads up on the fishing and Cindy runs a good clean kitchen. If you do stop by tell them Phil from Pa says hello.
  8. Baptiste and Elephant have a good muskie population. Not many lakes in that area with muskie. If you want to go over to Haliburton there are several lakes that have muskie. Both Elephant and Baptiste are loaded with small pike with some over 40 inches. You you are also in a top rockhound area. Many, many minerals and gems found around Bancroft. The Faraday mines produced uranium but have been closed for years.
  9. Great for walleye and bass. Takes two to catch them. One guy spreads a sein at the bottom of a riffle the other overturns rocks above the sein with his feet and the little buggers will be swept into the sein. Best way to hook them is under the collar. They are pretty much unhurt and will live for a long time. They have a tendency to crawl under rocks or logs and will snag you up so it is best to keep them moving a bit to prevent snags. I have caught rock bass without hooking the fish. The hellgramite grabbing the fish with it's pincers and holding on.
  10. Baits for walleye in no particular order Minnows night crawlers hellgramites frogs
  11. Thank you Spiel, the info on frazil ice was interesting and explains how ice can form on the bottom. I still don't understand how something lighter than water can sink. I can see ice jams where ice is mounded upon other ice having enough weight to push the lower ice deeper until it eventually hits the bottom. It seems to me that in order to have sinking ice you either have to decrease the density of the water or increase the density of the ice?
  12. I recently read a post here alluding to sinking ice. Personally I have never seen ice sink and am curious how this phenomena occurs. Can anyone explain this to me? If I remember right ice has a density of about .9 which makes it rather buoyant.
  13. Do you have April Fool's jokes in Canada? Hmmm the joke appears to be closer to 5 than 10 lbs though?
  14. I have fished it spring, summer, and fall, but that was a long time ago. Not sure how much it has changed. I would think a lot of it has to do with what you are fishing for. When I was there smallmouth and lakers were very common followed by walleye and pike. Several of the smaller lakes were loaded with speckles. Fly fishing with poppers on the smallmouth spawning beds was a big attraction but like I said depends what fish you target as to when you want to go. I would call them.
  15. It looks like the burn pile is a bit to close to the fence?
  16. Spook My first trip to Baptiste was in 1949 and I have averaged two weeks a year between Baptiste and Elephant ever since. If you are after walleye you picked the wrong place. The cottage ass. stocked several thousand a few years ago but they are scarce. Bass fishing is still good and the musky fishing is ok. Recently pike got into the system somehow and they are plentiful. There are also a few lakers. The muskies are in areas you wouldn't expect them and aren't in areas where you would expect them. pm me if you are interested in musky and I will give you a few hot spots. Where are you staying? Phil
  17. Yes thank you I'm calling the broker today seems that is the way to go.
  18. Thanks Rick I guess the only way to know for sure is to give them a call
  19. We are planning on attending the St Catharines show but are unsure of what kind of hassle we will get at the boarder. If anyone could give us a heads up on what to expect I would appreciate the info. We will be selling baits from the USA. Thanks Phil
  20. Thanks guys --very informative.
  21. Years ago on Lake Beauchene near Temiscaming we found Lakers stacked between 100 and 120 feet. With the downriggers there was no problem putting the bait right on them. After about 20 to 25 fish we asked ourselves if bringing a fish up from that depth would do them harm. We didn't know the answer so we stopped and went for smallies. We asked the operator about it when we got back and he said there would be no harm to the fish. I'm not so sure about that? I'm sure somebody on this board can answer that question.
  22. I understand Roy is on a TOP SECRET mission for the crown
  23. Marc the best to you and yours in the coming year. Looks like your buddy John is going to do the Milwaukee show with us this year. The Chi town show was booked but we are also looking at the St. Catherines Odessey 2007 show. Phil what we learned from the Columbus show--you don't take jerk baits to a trolling area--we did poorly at that show. bpsbassman yes he said he was wading but Howard knows the Allegheny he knows the holes.
  24. Roy, Howard didn't say he has several of our baits but didn't mention what he nailed it on. The only thing I know about the fish, it came from the Allegheny River.
