I have a Basscat. No question it is a great fishing boat but it won't do much more than 70mph.

It is a very shallow lake with a lot of good weeds. Most of the lake is in the 10 foot range, however, there is a nice 30 -35 foot trough that runs just off the east shoreline between the big rockface and the island. The south end of the trough peters out but has a nice area of rocks where you might be able to pick up a few smallmouth. The north end of the trough has some structure with weeds that jumps around from 10 to 20 feet with soft bottom. The rockface itself falls off to 15 foot. Supposedly a good muskie area but I have never done to well there. The island has a very nice rocky area on it's north side, another good smallmouth area. The second smaller rockface to the north also drops off to 15 foot and I have taken several muskie there. Most coming on jerkbaits. It is a small area and with one good drift you can cover the whole thing. Just to the south of this rockface there is a hump made up of rocks. A couple of rocks can catch a prop but they are usually marked. Good smallmouth area. I target muskie but have taken several nice largemouth. On the rare occasion we went for bass we caught several small smallmouth but never a good one. Muskie can be found anywhere. The mid-lake weed beds are productive and as Joonmoon suggested topwaters just before and after dark can be very productive. Probably, most of the muskie taken in Elephant are caught trolling spinners and spinnerbaits. Don't be afraid to fish shallow shoreline areas , 2 to 3 foot, after dark. Spinners are a good choice and will also pick up some nice largemouth. Elephant Lake lodge would be a good place for lunch. You can tie up at the dock and go up for a bite to eat or a cold one. They can probably give you a heads up on the fishing and Cindy runs a good clean kitchen. If you do stop by tell them Phil from Pa says hello.

Baptiste and Elephant have a good muskie population. Not many lakes in that area with muskie. If you want to go over to Haliburton there are several lakes that have muskie. Both Elephant and Baptiste are loaded with small pike with some over 40 inches. You you are also in a top rockhound area. Many, many minerals and gems found around Bancroft. The Faraday mines produced uranium but have been closed for years.

Great for walleye and bass. Takes two to catch them. One guy spreads a sein at the bottom of a riffle the other overturns rocks above the sein with his feet and the little buggers will be swept into the sein. Best way to hook them is under the collar. They are pretty much unhurt and will live for a long time. They have a tendency to crawl under rocks or logs and will snag you up so it is best to keep them moving a bit to prevent snags. I have caught rock bass without hooking the fish. The hellgramite grabbing the fish with it's pincers and holding on.

Thank you Spiel, the info on frazil ice was interesting and explains how ice can form on the bottom. I still don't understand how something lighter than water can sink. I can see ice jams where ice is mounded upon other ice having enough weight to push the lower ice deeper until it eventually hits the bottom. It seems to me that in order to have sinking ice you either have to decrease the density of the water or increase the density of the ice?

I recently read a post here alluding to sinking ice. Personally I have never seen ice sink and am curious how this phenomena occurs. Can anyone explain this to me? If I remember right ice has a density of about .9 which makes it rather buoyant.

Do you have April Fool's jokes in Canada? Hmmm the joke appears to be closer to 5 than 10 lbs though?

I have fished it spring, summer, and fall, but that was a long time ago. Not sure how much it has changed. I would think a lot of it has to do with what you are fishing for. When I was there smallmouth and lakers were very common followed by walleye and pike. Several of the smaller lakes were loaded with speckles. Fly fishing with poppers on the smallmouth spawning beds was a big attraction but like I said depends what fish you target as to when you want to go. I would call them.
