  1. Hello, So a family member purchased a Cottage on Lake Halliburton ( near Ft. Irwin ) Took a look around, seems that Smallmouth bass, Lake Trout and White fish (and perch) are the main fish in the lake. has anyone fished it? is it any good? What are the best tactics for summer months for whitefish and/or Lake trout? Looks like the max depth is found in a couple sections of the lake around 120 - 150 ft deep with some good areas in the 30 - 50 ft range... rocky shoals and plenty of shallow bays in the 3 - 5ft mark.. which I estimate will be weeded up come summer. I enjoy fishing for smallmouth of course, but since I'm comfortable flippin my tubes and spinners around islands and points / drop offs for them... My main curiosity is how to target the whitefish and / or laketrout in the summer months.
  2. I've got an LCD, had it for 2 1/2 years, everythings still great... Plasma sucks if you play video games.. Plasma sucks if you live at high altitudes LCD w/ backlit LED is the way to go but is $$ right now OLED is beautiful but $3000 for a 11" screen ahah LCD is def the winning standard with the best performance for its price Samsung, LG are great models.. stay away from Sony, they over-sharpen their colors on their TV's to state a higher contrast ratio but it definately effects standard viewing quality when lights are on in the room. I got mine from Tiger Direct, it was an olivea they have gone out of business but Samsung's Firmware updates work on it so I get all the new features even though my tv is 2 1/2 years old I paid $1900 for my 52" This would be worth $1100 now if you got it in a store If you buy a 40" + LCD and spend between $800 - $1100 you are going to be happy with it. My parents just got the new LG 52" LCD/LED backlit for $5500 US Puts all other TV's to shame..
  3. I fished for chomers with my 6.6 med action rod and spinning reel setup ( my usual bass setup ) for years... almost always caught a few.. but you can only put up with your friends or neighbouring anglers outfishing you sometimes 5 to 1 with their float setups before you will cave to the idea that your just missing out on a lot of potential fish on your line by using the spinning setup. In the end, yes you can fish with that setup, yes you will be frustrated by the limitations associated with working drifts with such a small rod... but no, your not just as well off as those with a float setup. Get yourself a nice center pin reel and a 13' rod to start, gonna fall in love with fishing all over again once you do.
  4. Regarding your comment that the police in caledonia have had their hands full in the last few years ( suppose you mean to native occupation of that build site.. ) Police were present, hands full? not likely since they did absolutely nothing to help the people of caledonia. that aside, The Caledonia dam is one of the spots that is unfortunately very pooly enforced. If it was enforced you'd see everyone gettin booted from fishing the whirlpools/fish ladders as that obviously violates the regs... But it just gets worse every year. As someone who grew up in caledonia.. its a sad sad thing for sure. I am no ninja either, but I know a few locals who take their own revenge on those who ignore the rules.. more then a few flat tires and "accidental" bucket knock overs into the river have come when these guys have been OOS fishing / fishing illegally ( saw one guy w/ a net dragging it through the main run on the south side , after his 2nd fish netted in 5 minutes i had enough and the net "dissapeared" when he returned to his truck to drop his fish off.. oooops! ) anyways, dont be shocked by them usin 3 rods, thats the least of the infractions you can expect to see there on any given fall or spring weekend. mnr, police do nothing.
  5. I'm with Royal Bank, if I deposit a personal cheque from someone, its a 24 hour hold. If I deposit a corporate Cheque ( such as insurance company etc.. ) there is no hold. Doesnt matter what branch. I think it has more to do with your standing with the bank, I've been a customer for nearly 15 years, have a $40k visa and 2 houses mortgaged through them, i dont think they consider me a risk. so if you dont have good credit, expect a hold. If you want good credit, give the banks some money by using a credit card and letting them collect some interest off ya now and then.. not by missing payments but by paying the credit card off without paying the full balance everytime a statement comes in. so every couple months or so let them have some interest earned from you and they will like you more then if you just pay your whole balance each month. Banks are just companies tryin to make a profit. If you provide them with some profit they in turn will give you more options to bank with them.
  6. Hey all, I'm heading off to Mexico to get married in the start of November... While im there I was thinking of getting my groomsmen and best man out for a short fishing excursion... We'll be at the Grand Bahia PRincipe Akumal resort in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico.. about 30 minutes outside of paya del carmen. If anyone has any information on some fishing options out there, shoot me a msg or reply to this post. Any helps greatly appreciated!
  7. Hey, I'm from Caledonia... Well lived there from birth in 1980 --> Grade 9 year (93??) then moved out to the hammer. Had a childhood job as the Dickee Dee Icecream guy workin for Mike down at Caledonia Tackle when i was a kid. hehe Ahh the good ole' days of fishing on any given weekend without worry of 40 other people around with their white buckets. I never went to the old or "new" highschool though, moved out over the summer i started highschool. You may know my Sister or cousins tho. They went to the old and new highschools respectively.
  8. Here's the deal, Antivirus software isnt needed if your a smart internet user, not clicking on random links sent to you at 3am from someone on your MSN messenger list... that claims to have found pictures of you etc.. etc.. dont download random things from the internet just because it says "free" and if a pop up comes up flashing saying you have a virus click here to remove it... chances are you dont want to click it. As for firewall, its only useful if your using newly released operating systems or specificly have a need to block one or more programs from getting out to the internet ( like you want to prevent your kids from playing World of Warcraft all night long to feed their addictions... If you have a Router ( wireless or otherwise ) you already have a NAT firewall build in where you can block ports you dont want. Just need to educate yourself on what its doing. Can also be used to track if software on your computer has requested ports to be opened.. so if you downloaded some free fishing game, and all of a sudden its opened 1/2 dozen ports on your router.. shut the ports down. People who spent $100 on Norton and Mcaffee etc.. or even worse those whole "internet security and antivirus suites" that claim to do all for you.. well thats not only a terrible waste of money but it'll slow your computer down sooooooooooooooo much. if you MUST have something, 2 programs is all you need both are free AVG free , and MBAM (Malware Bytes Anti-Malware) these two applications will keep you clean even if your ignorant to your random clicking of website pop ups.
  9. Went out on a charter w/ some family and friends .. Reel hard did us proud. Docked out of St. Kitt's marina and got into some real nice action.. here's a couple pics and...
  10. I've caught a few in my day, you get on the grand river on the right day and you can find schools of em too. My fav tactic, is 2 super sharp single hooks, on tied direct to the main line, and the other on a 3" lead tied to the first hook. Take a medium sized minnow .. 4" kill it or use frozen/salted minnows hook it on then goto your wife/mother/aunt or the friendly lady next door and steal her pantyhose.. cut a 4" x 1" strip and hook it to the first and second hook.. not bunched up. If your in a river like how i usually am, just toss it out no weight and let it dead drift through em.. they love to surface pick off the water and they tend to twist when they grab it, the nylon material snags their tiny teech just enough to give you a chance to get a hook set. Mouths are all hard bone so its difficult to get a hook set. Most of the time you gotta keep constant pressure and when you land them the hook will just fall off as its rarely ever dug into the mouth of the fish. Best luck!
  11. Hey all, I'm headin up near Bracebridge to Leech Lake, rented a cottage up there for my fiance and I. Just wondering if anyones fished the lake? what fish are there? whats the structure like etc... any helpful tips for someone new to the lake. Thanks! -Fcm
  12. Fishings been slow for last couple weeks but Ive heard good things from this past weekend up in callander area, some nice pike being caught at night n' a couple keeper eyes. I was up 2 weekends ago, got a few small guys, nothin' to write home about. plenty of mudpuppys hehe.
  13. Well, i'll start by saying this is likely not the place to debate copyright issues... but since we are.. here's my view on the whole scenerio.. I've been downloading games and music off the internet and bbs's for about 20 years... What ive found during that time is a.) easily 80% of the content I download ends up being crap, poorly made or not living up to their marketing teams gimmick commercials... in the end you get a game that you play for 10 minutes and never touch again.. If I was to have purchased that WOW would I have been ticked off. In the last 5 or so years you've seen a great many companies release Demo's of their games and music for free on the internet.. This is greatly improved the scenerio for people. I always buy a game I enjoy playing.. and the fact that downloading the game before hand allows me to make a well informed decision on my purchase should simply encourage companies to ensure their product is living up to customer's expectations. As far as music goes, 99% of all bands and music released these days are seriously production line generic crap music. They dont deserve money for what they put out. When they start going back to real talent with bands and musicians that can write their own songs and sign them as good outside of a studio as in one.. then they will be worthy of payment. until then.. Load up Piolet , Emule, Bit torrent , and download away. Im a firm beleiver that if your a talented artist, you will have people willing to pay for your music, and more so willing to pay to see you perform. If your just riding the music industries production line processes, well then I can only hope people continue to find ways to avoid paying for mass produced generic songs. There is a reason that groups of musicians are banding together to fight against the RIAA and other music industry leaders. The amount the musician is actually paid is Sad in comparrison to the total revenue taken in by the record label and production companies. Very sad. Lets find a way to pay the artists directly, cut out the big inflated factory sitting between us and the artists.
