  1. I have had numerous floatation suits/jackets over the years and here's my take! Any flotation clothing is better than none and HT Ice Picks are an absolute must! I hated the one piece suit because I always felt like the Michelin man wearing it and opening it half way when it was warm out was a pain! Two piece suits are awesome but some are stiffer than others! Last year was my first year with a Striker suit and I absolutely love it, incredibly well designed, obviously with a tremendous amount of feedback from ice anglers! The adjustable inseam is awesome for us vertically challenged people! I would highly recommend one of their suits! Here is a test by David Lefebre:

I’d be interested to know about this as well. Somebody told me that I could rig up a basic tablet/iPad  and a contractors case/mount for gps on the cheap.

I was thrilled to have Navionics on my new helix 7 though I’m a little disappointed now to find it’s not as detailed as the bigger units or some of the competition.

    Looking forward to your findings

Curious as to why you don't believe that your unit is as detailed with your Navionics card? The screen is smaller than an 9", 10" or 12" but your detail should be the same, you just have to zoom in. I'm wondering if you don't have the Fish'N Chip option selected on your unit which gives you SonarCharts with 1 foot contours!

This nay have been discussed on here before but I did not find it on my brief search.  I am considering buying for my I-phone. Navionics seem to be missing lots of smaller inland lakes. I get the impression that i-Boating has more. Any comments on which is best both in terms of coverage and usability? thx

Unfortunately I'm not really familiar with the coverage of i-Boating but I can tell you that Navionics covers close to 2,400 bodies of water in Ontario alone! If fact most of the time, I'm surprised when we look for a smaller lake that the Navionics has data on it! You can check out the list of lakes at https://www.navionics.com/usa/navionics-regions-canada.html

Z-man baits always work for me as well. Really nice hawgs.
Just curious, how the Hi-Def Relief Shading on the Navionics helped you exactly? Comparing to the time when it was not available?

Tried some different areas based how it looks on the Relief Shading! Gives you a different perspective on what the bottom looks like as opposed to just depth lines.

  5. I've been lucky enough to spending a few days on the St. Lawrence River recently and the Hi-Def Relief Shading on the Navionics charts definitely gave us a new perspective on the structure that we were targeting. We fished anywhere from 15-50 FOW and caught some beautiful Smallies, there were also lots of smaller specimens. By no means was the fishing easy but always fun to try something new and catch a few hawgs! The majority of the fish came on a dropshot rig, a Ned rig or a Carolina rig! A Z-Man TrickShotZ for dropshotting, Finesse TRD for Ned rigging and a Diesel Minnow for Carolina rigging were the ticket, still blown away by how long these baits last on the hook!

  6. I was guiding on Balsam earlier this week and only caught 1 pike (Around 30") I do believe that the larger pike are deep this time of year there but the population is pretty strong there. BTW pike are great eating as long as you know how to clean them properly! We hooked into about 22 Smallies and landed 16 of them, the young folks who were with me were pretty jacked!

Thanks, I’ve been wondering about that lake since we stayed in the area last year. I’ve heard about the unmarked rocks so it makes me a bit nervous. I’m going to check and see if it’s a lake covered by navionics

Kahshe Lake is on both the Navionics charts and the Garmin LakeVu g3. It can be a little nerve racking but if you pay careful attention to your up-dated charts, you should be fine. don't venture into any sketchy looking areas on the charts, Stay out of the blue! Pretty good fishing in this lake!

  8. I had heard that the Summer Salmon season was going well so we had to go try it ourselves. Myself & 3 friends went out for a morning fish out of Lakefront Promenade. Tons of bait around and so were the Kings. I do believe that we went 8 for 11 for the morning with 3 in the 18-20 lbs. range. Lots of fun, gonna get back out there soon!
