  1. I truly believe that once you believe that you've learnt everything there is to know about fishing, you might as well give it up! I am always learning in this great sport and that's part of why I'm so passionate about it and sharing with others! The challenge is always there and will be until my dying days! That being said there are those who I believe are very intuitive when it comes to fishing and are very good naturally, whereas the rest of us have to work at it! I still get excited when I believe that I've learned something new and can't wait to get out & give it a try!

Next to actually fishing, my favourite thing to do is to talk fishing and I strongly believe that you can learn from everyone, even if it's what not to do! LOL

  2. So up until very recently, the Navionics SonarChart Shading feature only covered the Lake of the Woods, Namakan & Rainy Lakes in north-western Ontario! While I was checking out the NEW Navionics mobile app that now includes this feature, I discovered that most of the Trent-Severn Waterway from the Bay of Quinte up to Port Severn, the Rideau System, St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes are now covered as well! I understand that they are still working on more in Canada but that's a huge improvement! I've including some of the screenshots from my iPhone for different bodies of water now covered up here!

Sounds like it’s worth a shot. At least for a year.  Thanks.

I don't think that you'll be disappointed, I still believe for what it cost, that it is probably the best value in fishing/boating! One app will work across all your devices regardless of whether they're on a Apple/Android platform. You can look at your maps when you're off your boat, sitting on the can, etc. You can save markers(waypoints) to it, very useful if you go to other lakes or on other peoples' boats. If you ever travel and need weather/tides it's all on the app! Enjoy!

So David, excuse my ignorance. I fish a Kawartha lake and use a Lowrance HDS first generation graph with GPS.   I have about 200 waypoints and know the lake pretty well. But any insight into new structure would be useful. How would this APP be useful to me?  And what is the cost?

    thanks

    Peter.

    Hey Peter,

You have to decide whether it’s worth it to you to have it or not! Cost for an annual subscription is around $30 annually! The SonarChart Shading gives a 3D look to your charts and you can also use the SonarCharts and colourized different depth ranges to make things stand out more! I know that even on lakes that I know very well, when I see a different chart, I usually notice something that I didn’t see before! But if you only fish one lake and figure you know it well enough then...😊😊😊

Played with a little bit. Cool idea. However, I cannot see this feature working on Muskoka Lake, Lake Couchiching works.

It looks like all North lakes are not working.

Yeah, they just recently added Simcoe-Couch, Bay of Quinte, most of the Kawarthas and Rideau system! They added more to the list all the time! It'll just take time, up until recently only Lake of Woods and a few other lakes in Northwestern Ontario had this feature.

  6. If you have a current subscription on the Navionics Boating App on your mobile devices, make sure that you update the app and check out the latest feature on the app! You now have a multiple chart-overlay option with the Navionics Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading. No additional cost involved here. This feature was previously only available on the Navionics Platinum+ & HotMaps Platinum cards. There are not a lot of Canadian Lakes available yet but I'm told that they're coming but all of our neighbours from down south have lots of options. 7. In order to help myself stay sane and hopefully help others as well, one of the things that we've started doing to more Facebook & Instagram chats for any of you who are on those social media platforms. In fact tonight, I will be hosting on the "EVERYTHING You Wanted to Know About FISHING but were afraid to ask..." Facebook group page -   https://www.facebook.com/groups/1421921441322251/ a "The Science Behind Fishing" chat with Fisheries & Oceans Canada Fisheries Biologist, Pure Fishing Ambassador & Ontario BASS Nation Conservation Director, Jason Barnucz - The Reel Angle and Ontario MNR Resource Management Technician, Rapala & HT Enterprises Inc Pro-Staff, Wil Wegman. We will discuss the recent 50th Bassmaster Classic, the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Conservation convention held there and so much more! Feel free to comment with any questions that you may have for these two! Don't miss out on what should prove to be a very entertaining and informative session, it will start at 7:30 PM tonight (Wed. April 15th)!

  8. Fishing is not closed and everyone needs to make their own decisions! For me, I believe that there are much more pressing matters than whether I go fishing or not! And no one loves fishing more than I do. If you have access to water while being able to properly practice social distancing and non-essential travel then have at it! For me , my focus is more on staying healthy & well, making sure that my elderly neighbours, mother & mother in-law are looked after and figuring how we can all do our part to stem the tide of this horrible pandemic. I am working through my club and  friends who have a supply chain to help to ensure that our front line workers are properly supplied with all the PPE that they need!

BTW, on the positive side, I'm finally starting to get a handle on re-organizing my garage and gear, something that I haven't had time to do in years! Be prepared for an onslaught of gear for sale! LOL Please everyone stay home & stay safe, remember we're all in this together!

Loved my SKEETER and had it for 10 years without an issue on boat or motor.

It was a great musky fishing boat and we saw plenty of action together.

But when I decided to retire from fishing I sold all my gear including the boat and this was the last day I had her and the new owner picked her up just after this picture was taken.

Kind of a sad day really.

    Sweet BUG Lew!

  10. I've been in 3 different areas over the last few days and there is 10-15" of black ice all the way into shore in those areas! There are areas of the lake where the shoreline ice is eroding quickly, be super cautious in those areas especially as things can change while you are on the ice! Stay Safe out there!
