  1. The fat part, or the worrying part??

Ice fishing can be a great cardio workout - dragging your sled out, drilling holes, running between tip-ups, dragging the sled back.

I need a sled too?! I'll never afford this!

(the fat part. lost over 30lbs so far this year.. not sure exactly how much because my scale just said ERR2 when I'd stand on it, so I really don't know where I started, just when my weight started showing back up on the screen.. lol.)

  2. Dude, all you need is a stick (literally, from a tree) some line and a hook. Any hook will do...take a treble off your Hula Popper if you have to.

Oh, you'll need a friend to drill some holes, or find some recently used holes and chip the ice out with your stick.

I think you're afraid of becoming addicted!

    :)

Nah, not afraid - I welcome it. I tried it before and really didn't like it, but things are different now. Tastes change. I'm older, married, more mature, I like asparagus (still don't like brussels sprouts though), so maybe it'll be something I enjoy now. If it can help feed my fishing addiction through the miserable months, then I'm DTF (down to fish) in the winter.

Of course, being so fat I worry about the ice breaking, but I'm slowly working on that.

  3. I love how nobody voted in the poll that they only fish on ice. Might be a reason for that!

In all seriousness, I'm really looking forward to trying it out again. I wish I had a snowmobile though, so I could get to some lakes I want to try where there are likely no roads plowed (they don't maintain them in the summer, so I doubt winter will be any different). It'll be a long time before I can afford that, since I don't even own winter boots. I'm starting basically from scratch here. The only ice fishing gear I already own is hooks, and even those are probably a special summer-only kind.

I just might use it on the ice as well.

I was thinking that exact thought. I really gotta get my hands on one or two of them. Guess I'll start with a trip to the dump.

  4. I agree with Bill, but, can live with the status quo. It would be nice to see a section of JUST fishing topics.

It is a little odd (to me) that there's a section just for photos, and a section just for computer help, but not a section just for fishing on a fishing forum. And why not just put the photos and computer help, etc, in with the rest?

  5. 2011 Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations state the following:

It is illegal to possess live invasive fish, including round goby, tubenose goby, grass carp, bighead carp, black carp, silver carp, rudd, ruffe and any species of snakehead. If any of these species are caught, they should be destroyed and not released back into any waters.

    and

If you catch a round goby it should be destroyed and not released back into any waters.

    and

Never use gobies as bait. It is against the law to use gobies as bait or have live gobies in your possession.

This seems pretty clear to me.

  6. I couldn't really narrow it down, but the stuff Moosebunk's posted twice now really is something I won't forget - and I wasn't even there.

Aside from that, I think I'd like to do a bunch of stuff Robson Green does in his show. Marlin fishing, catching trout in the Grand Canyon, etc.

As for nearby, I wish I could remember the places my dad took me as a kid, because I remember us catching trout, and I'd like to revisit wherever that was. And then there's my plans to try actual brooks and creeks for brookies next year.

  7. I always wore my seatbelt, except once when I stopped at the post office on my way home. I didn't put my belt on for the 30-second trip from the post office to my driveway because well, it was 30 seconds and would almost take as long to buckle up. Lo and behold, a cop is waiting at the end of my street, 3 seconds from my driveway.

Now I wear my seatbelt even if I'm just moving my car to my lot across the road - they could be hiding in the bushes!

  8. Tip wrapping is the reason that so many braided lines are stiffened with a covering of mono. I love very supple lines like Mason Tiger Braid or the original Tuff Line. Yes, they do sometimes wrap around the end of the rod but it's very rare for me to leave any slack line out the tip of my rod.

Yeah, I liked my TufLine Duracast well enough.. not sure if that's the same one you used, but it was the only one on the shelf when I bought it. I'd buy it again, but I want to try something else first, just because I want to try a bunch and see what works best for me.

  9. Btw...

I thought they stopped giving back money for energy audit stuff...

I thought that you only get 1/2 of the money you got a couple years ago now? I forget which, but either the federal or provincial government pulled out of that audit stuff right after I did it, which was a year or two ago.

There's also the home renovation tax credit, which I think skipped a year or two and it's supposed to be back now.

  10. Dana, now is the perfect time to invest in a really nice combo.

Shimano is rolling out a bunch of new models, and the old stuff is discounted at most of the larger retailers.

Get yerself a Stradic, I promise you'll love it.

I don't use the Ugly Stik/GX125 combo anymore, it's just a backup and sometimes guests use it. I'd go and buy a Compre (or a St. Croix of some kind) and Stradic if I had the money, but I don't. I am using a Voltaeus and Spirex now, both of which I really like. I need to save up for ice fishing gear since I don't even own winter boots... And more importantly than any of that, a truck.

  11. I've caught all my 20+inch trophy brookies with Fireline Crystal, not to mention my PB 48.5in pike.

I've definitely noticed it frays, but I've never had it snap on me..

I guess it's all personal preference..

Yeah, you're right about that for sure. It never snapped on me, so the fraying wasn't *really* an issue per se, but I just didn't like it overall. It really does remind me of dental floss, and just doesn't feel right to me, but then, it was the first non-mono line I ever tried.. I did have issues with tip wrapping and whatnot, but the feel of the fraying line bothered me probably more than anything. I also didn't like how white it was, but line colors is something that I don't quite understand yet. It was really visible too, so I thought fish would see it too, but I still caught some on it.

  12. The most curious aspect (to me) of this whole thing is just how much animosity some people have towards these protestors. If you don't agree with those protests, don't take part in them...problem solved.

I haven't paid much attention to the whole Occupy thing going on right now, but at the G20, I couldn't believe how the majority of people attacked the protesters, saying that they deserved to be mass-arrested and held in chicken-sized coups without charge, beaten for no reason, and so forth. I was outraged, as were a handful of others scattered across the country. And sadly, nothing really came of it and most of us moved on.

    Apathy... How quickly you overtake.

  13. the fireline crystal is the worst line I have used! It's like trying to cast with dental floss...

spiderwire on the other hand is a great line. the green moss keeps its colour a lot longer then other lines too.

Actually, I think dental floss might fray less...

Which specific SpiderWire do you recommend? As soon as my second spool arrives (this one is now loaded with 4lb P-Line CX for trout), I'm putting a 10-12lb line on it, and it'll be whatever I can get locally that I haven't tried yet (hopefully the new PP or your recommended SpiderWire).
