  1. If I understand correctly, you attached the tarp to the first pole and then began to drills holes for the other four poles.

Wouldn't it make more sense to put all five poles up before attaching the tarp? That way when you do attached the tarp, the force is spread across five poles instead of one or two.

Thanks for doing all the hard work and keeping us informed of your progress. You will save the rest of us a lot of grief by showing us how to set it up properly before we head out.

  2. Thats a piss off! More and more devices are coming out with lock codes built into them (my new garmin Streetpilot has that feature) so that even if someone does steal it, it is useless to them. Kind of makes taking the chance to steal it a bigger risk than what it's worth. Won't be long before that feature is available on cameras too I'll bet.

Anyway, doesn't change the fact that you are out a camera and some other schmuck has one.

I would report it to the manager of Tim's and the cops anyway though, they may have had other reports and it might help in catching the dink!

Good idea about reporting to the store manager. They probably have servalance cameras. Best to do it as soon as possible; they may re-use the tapes.

  3. Will it be before or after the bass opener? If it is before the opener, then pike fishing will be your best bet. Do you know what part of the lake that you will be staying on?

I have found the Blue Berry Island area to be good for early season pike. I ahve had a lot of success with Five-o-Diamonds early in the year.

  4. -every song/album that is down loaded, for free, is reaching in (hands in your pockets) to the artist's wallet.

I strongly disagree with your statement that every free download takes money from the the artist. People who are heavy downloaders of music would not purchase all of those CD's if they could not download them; they would simply own fewer CD's. The same logic apply's to movies and software.

Many of these downloads, probably the vast majority, do not represent lost sales, they represent sales that would never have occured anyways. This is one of many factors that makes downloading completely different than breaking into someones home and stealing there personal belongings. A comparison that has been make on this thread.

Also, artists do recieve a royalty on blank CD's. So they have in effect been paid for downloads. They can't have it both ways; charge us a royalty and then say that we cannot download their music. This royalty is paid regardless of what the CD's are used for. I recently purchased a new computer, I burned several CD's to transfer files (mostly pictures that I took from my digital camera) to my new computer; musicians received a royalty on those CD's.

  5. We should send an email to Rogers and other large corporations threatening them to pay their deferred taxes that we end up paying. Maybe Bank of Montreal would like an email from us telling them to pay their deferred taxes, considering they profited billions last year. Make them feel guilty for all the social programs our kids miss out on because they wont pay their taxes. They want it all, they would take our blood if they could suck it out of our veins without getting caught.

Do you actually know what a deferred tax is? My guess is that you do not.

The government has a set of rules on how income taxes are calculated. The CICA handbook has a set of rules on how income is calculated for accounting purposes. These rules usually result in a different profit figures for accounting purposes than for tax purposes. Some of the differences are permanent, some are timing differences (i.e. and expense may be recorded in one for tax purposes, and a different year for accounting purposes). A deferred tax is the result of a timing difference that causes the current year's taxable profit to be lower than the current year's accounting profit. The bottom line is, these companies have already paid the tax required by law based on the rules set forth by the government. You cannot create a set of rules on how to calculated your company's tax payable and then tell them to pay additional taxes over and above this amount. I apologize if I appear to be hi-jacking this thread; the constant call for companies to pay their deferred taxes is a per peeve of mine.

  6. may-haps I am wrong about this...but no drop of water on this planet...unless as said "land-locked" is "owned"..and in that case only the land around 'said' waterway is actually owned....I am not a lawyer but come on...you try to kick me off some fozen water which I assume is attached to a larger waterway (without slips).....what the heck...as the saying goes..take a long walk off a short peir....and keep smilin' and fishin'

    Brkygetr

The Long Point Company on Lake Erie definitely does own some of the water around the point. People do get charged for fishing those waters. So there are some cased where people can own the water.

Generally speaking though; any navigatable water is public. But, the marina could be one of the few exceptions though.

  7. I use a deep cycle battery as my cranking battery; and I don't have any problem keeping it charged with a 55hp Suzuki. I also run two fishfinders, bilge, lights, and livewell off of this battery. A deep cycle may not make a very good cranking battery for a larger motor.

I run a seperate battery for my bow mount, it is only a twelve volt.

You do not need an on board charger. An external charger will work too, an on board charger is just a little more convenient. You should make a habit of recharging yuor batteries as soon as possible after using them.

  8.

another example since im from sudbury it works the same as our mines, they might put 6 million dollars in a new smelting plant (more efficient which willl make more money in a long run) but only sell 5 million worth of ore, that counts as a million dollar loss, more like a 6 million dollar investment, if they can't afford it or think it won't make them money they wont do it

Actually no, they wouldn't show that as a 1 million dollare loss. With proper accounting, the 6 million dollar investment will be amortized over the life of the asset while the 5 million dollars in sales will be counted as revenue in the year.

when they show an independent audit saying they're in trouble i'll believe, until then expect some high officials to get a big bonus

Like all publically treaded companies, North American auto makers must have their financial results independandly audited every single year. Those independantly audited financial results show that Ford and GM are in big trouble.

edit: just thought of something, those bonuses count towards the losses also, isn't it ironic

You have a very good point. There often is a very large disconnect between upper management's performance and their compensation. This is also a contributing factor to the problems facing North American auto makers.

  9. Actually a reciept for minnows was a good idea even before the VHS problem. You are not allowed to possess more than 40 self caught minnows. If you have more than 40 minnows, then yuo better have a reciept regardless of where they came from.

It's even more important to have a reciept to prove that you purchased the minnows in the right location. Not the wrong location as suggested earlier ... the is a reason for the rules.

  10. I am left handed; I cast with two hands and reel with my right. I count my cast as left handed because my left hand holds rod where a one handed caster would hold it.

I golf right because my dad taught me to golf and insisted that that was the proper way to golf ... even though swinging left handed felt more natural. I shoot left in hockey but prefer to play right wing.

All this talk reminds my of a line from Duddy Kravits ... Try your left hand, it will feel like it's somebody else.

  11. I live in the Scarborough/Rouge area; less than a mile from the Pickering border. I have never lived down town so I cannot really compare the area to the core; but most of the people in my neighborhood are quite freindly. I don't have any trouble getting someone to watch the house or water the plants while we are away.

  12. I noticed in the MNR release it states that the virus "has been linked to the die-offs of at least four species of fish" - presumably in the infected Lower Great Lakes. Does anyone know what species these are? :dunno:

Also, do we know which of the remaining species are likely to be most affected by the disease? Could it affect the fishing opportunities in the coming years for bass, pike, carp, panfish etc in Lake O? :(

We were not allowed to bring Coho into the Ringwood hatchery this year because of fears that they had VHS. A sample of Coho from this year's run were sent for testing. If they are free of VHS we may be able to raise them next year. Next fall will be the final run for Coho if no further stocking takes place - unless they can form a self sustaining population.

I don't believe that VHS actually harms trout or salmon. But they can transmit it other species with are more vulnerable. I think walleye are one of the species that can experience die offs from VHS.

Yes salted ones is illegal because it had some effect on whitefish apparently? But you can buy pre-packaged frozen minnows, they sell them down the road from me at the gas station.

I thought it was because there were huge quantities of salted minnows beging sold; and that banning the sale of salted minnows would reduce the harvest to more manageable numbers.

  13. sure will hurt bait dealers here in the south but what has to be done needs to be done

i guess we will just be using dead minnows like they do in quebec

Actually, I believe that it is illegal to sell dead minnows... at least the salted ones anyways.

I found the following statement from the article interesting:

"In the infected zone, south of Highways 401 and 402 across Ontario, live bait fish will not be allowed to be commercially harvested or transported north of the two highways."

Does this mean that it would be legal for an individual to harvest minnows south of the 401? It would make more sense to completely ban the harvest minnows south of the 401 not just the commercial harvest.

Also, is it only commercial operators that cannot transport minnows north of the 401; or individuals as well? I.e. would I be able to purchase minnows from Rerries and take them to Scugog or Simcoe? The minnows would have had to come from north of the 401 anyway since there is not harvest south of the 401.

  14. I'd be more likely to believe the 5/160k warranty is the candy GM has to dangle to remain fluid in the market, in other words, the only way to get rid of their stuff. If the product was that good, it would sell itself.

I know that general motors had some quality probelms in the eighties and nineties; however, I did read some quality reviews recently that put their quality right up there with Honda & Toyota.

Unfortunately, reputation is based on "old information". Many people will continue to shy away from the current GM lineup based on their experiences with vehicles made in the eighties and nineties. It take a few years of high quality production before their reputation will improve.
