Yep, the bite was on hard and heavy, all small fish though. Today was alot slower, but I had two good smallies, 3.5-4lbs, and a bonus 33" pike that fought like a ton of bricks in the rapids! Though it was gonna be a monster, lol. -

Quick update. All in all 32 landed bass yesterday. I took a few small breaks throughout the day when the bite turned cold, then I'd return an hour or so later to the same spot, and the bite was on again! Very fun day, was great weather wise, about 24 no humidity and barely a breeze. Water temps were actually fairly cold, about 70 degrees, down from 74 the day before. Lots of fish, but most were in the 2-2.5lb range today, no real monsters. Also lost about 5 fish. Heading out again here in about half an hour to the same spot. Weather looks calm and partly sunny, water temp a cool 68 degrees. I'll be interested to see how this affects them this am. And on a side note, Jeff Gustafson took home the International Falls bass tourny yesterday, fishing right beside me at one point, and bagged a healthy 19.66lbs of smallmouth bass!!! Nice job Gussy! -
I didn't see anything in this topic that suggested walleyes need to adjust to the lighting???? Maybe my eyes aren't adjusting well this am? hehe I know when I night fish walleye, I get out early for my eyes to adjust, it just seems easier for me, I'm not stumbling around tripping on things and such edit. Sorry Terry. Some good points there! But I should have quoted whitbyboatguy, lol

lol, true. May the farce be with me. I gotta a 12 pack in the fridge awaiting my disappointment -
After a few slow weeks, the bite picked up big time!!!! Yesterday I went out and fished the shores and shallows from shore, went 17 for 21, in 5 hours. Those fish had bellies too!!! That doesn't usually happen until mid september, so now I'm all excited, hehe. 7 of those fish weighed over 3lbs, which is great considering I nabbed them in the rapids, biggest one was 19.75" and at 4lbs. Tomorrow, the goal is to take pics of at least 20 fish, from shore. Might go out in the boat too for an evening bite? I'll keep you posted. The plan is grubs on heavy jigs burned through the shallows, but we'll see how it goes. I just have that need to hook fish's Hope you all have a great night and a great day tomorrow! Great fishing OFC, and as always, I'm jealous of those who fish lakers, salmon, carp, musky!!!!! LOL

anyone know where can find crappies now?
manitoubass2 replied to snowdown's topic in General Discussion
Well I guess that rules out northwest bay, lol. -
Lol, sounds like an experience I had a few years back, shore fishing with my kids and dog. I was unhooking a small walleye and had too much slack line, my dog ran across chasing a frog or something on the shore and caught my line. It jerked out the jig and punched into my thumb and believe me it hurt like hell. Didnt help that my dog kept running either. That stupid prediciment took me about twenty minutes to get under control, it was a complete disaster. Left me with 8 stitches to the thumb too

That sounds pretty sketchy! Yum salted dingers work well for nighttime walleye also. I use them mainly on a jig head and basically let them sit on bottom, or texas rigged with a split shot about 14" from the hook. I like the black/silver tail ones

NW bay near Emo Ontario, 20-25 deep off the reefs, lol. Where are you located? I'm sure there is about 125,000 lakes in Ontario that have crappie in them -
logic bomb! lol Congrats, for a second time, on your first ski! Great looking fish

If your near a shallow sandbar, night fishing top water walleyes can be really productive. It;s funny though, Harrison might chime in on his experience, but I find I have to have a very slow retrieve with a frog for top water walleye. I cast to my spot, let the bait sit for about 15-20 seconds, give it a quick jerk, then rest again. If I fish it any faster I never have any strikes. That might just be where I'm fishing though??? Another option is drop shotting minnows leeches or crawlers, works well before and after the bite really turns on, might help you land a few extras on your outing
-
Congrats!!!! Must have been very exciting! I suppose I'm the only one on this board that my first musky ever was about 18"'s? lol, thats ok, cause my second was a monsterous 24"! hahahaa

When walleye fishing during dark, I always do best around 11pm-2am. Around Rainy, the best walleye bite goes in certain time frames. 8pm is the last productive bite of the day for me, so the next feeding cycle starts around 11. I usually head out earlier though to get set up and get the eyes used to the adjusting light. I like to fish sand and mud bottoms at this time, and anywhere from 1-12ft. Sometimes the walleye are virtually on shore, lol. I cast right at shore, just like bass fishing. I still use the same baits for the most part. But shallow cranks and flicker shads etc are a blast when there shallow. I also like an area with some current, not heavy current though. and as mentioned before, top water frogs and walleye are very fun, just not crazy productive. It's not everyday you get to experience a top water bite with walleye! Oh, and I like black baits, anything black or with some black on it

Thats a bummer. Wicked report though, many thanks!!!! There is nothing worse than being excited about a new line, taking all the line off and replacing it, only to remove the new line and put back on the old line, lol.

i'm interested in hearing how the Nanofil works. I'm still very happy though with my Suffix 832. Just a thought, anyone having issues with guide wrapping should try to keep a closer eye on there line. Once I started paying attention, it never happens anymore. Same with my kids, and lord knows they used to have wind knots and guide wrapping down to a T, lol

The smiles on your face say it all! I lived in alberta for 4 years, and never once got out fishing. Major mistake I'll regret for along time

Using bait vs. lures... Help a newbie out :)

Yep, very good idea. Def. helps you remember important info. And lol, it was pretty awesome to win the derby from shore. Also won the ice fishing derby too! Seems I know these spots very well, hehehe -

and where a watch, keep track of time. As you learn a spot, keep track of when the fish seem to be most active. Alot of great spots are only great at certain times of day, or times of year. If you notice that the bite turns on at certain times, well, you know when to head out and be successful. If the fish only bite in the evening, you know not to go too early, etc. For some added motivation, here are a few of my pics of fish landed from shore in the past two years! Enjoy A good walleye from early summer, on a 3/8oz jig and plastic bait A decent pike that fell prey to a spoon in early summer Lil smally in the rain (on a dt6 I believe?) Another good smallie in crappy conditions Sturgeon, 1st cat of the day on a jig and salted YUM grub. Took an hour to land My sons PB walleye from shore!!! My other boys PB smallie! Momma walleye, mid dummer last year I think. This guy landed me in first place of the local fishing derby this spring, yep, from shore I beat out 21 boats! and the money goes too? lol, a free beer too boot. The anglers were all very surprised I won from shore, and we shared some laughs over a beer about it and sometimes you'll even catch a free bait, and the same bait you were already using, lol -

and as for soft plastic baits, again, carry alot of variety, sizes colors etc. Scented baits work well in muddy or stained water. As for Gulp! and Trigger X and other scented baits, they work. As much debate as there is about them, they do work, and when fished properly, are definitely as effective as live bait. And shore angling requires the bait to stay on the hook, lol, and this is another advantage of these baits. Try casting 125ft from shore with a minnow on a jig head, you'll be lucky to get 3 casts with that minnow. Gulp! minnow on the other hand you could cast all day, or catch 5-6 fish on one bait at times. They can also be re-used, big plus. If you buy Gulp! or Trigger X baits, they leak though, and they stink. I don't even keep them in my tackle box. I put the bag into another zip lock bag, then put all my scented baits in a big plastic bag, then it goes in my backpack. Also, with cranks, if your fishing a snaggy, rocky area, you can remove the rear treble hook to reduce snags. When fanning out an area with casts, count the time it takes to hit bottom(when the line goes slack). I count a 1-1000 in my head. Make mental notes about a change in water depth. If you find a drop off of even 2-3ft, this is a good target area to fish. Changes in structure, depth etc hold fish alot of times. If there is current, look for current seams to cast in, or around. Same with eddies or rock boils. These are important areas to fish to be successful. Remember, from shore there is no depth finder to locate fish, so learn to notice these areas to fish. If you can spot baitfish, even better, this is a great sign fish will be in the area. If your bass fishing, when your retrieve gets close to shore, slow down if your can. Alot of good fish are either located on the shore, or follow your bait to shore. When the fish thinks its too close to shore or its gonna escape, this often triggers a bite. And big pike will also be located right at shore in the right conditions/ time of year, so dont be surprised when a big bite comes in 18" of water! Alsways be mentally ready to set the hook, even when you assume the last cast was unsuccessful. I'm sure I'll think of some more, but thats it for now, lol -
Thanks! I've been around for a few hours here and there, just to browse though. Too tired and beat down from training to actually do anything, lol. The bear thing was enough excitement for the summer I suppose
-
Yep, agreed, too bad it was my kids. So I had to man up, lol. And yeah, a fillet knife would do nothing, but when push comes to shove, you'd be surprised what you reach for and what sounds like a good idea, hehe. Once you've made a choice, your forced to stick with it. I had no time to dig through the tackle box once again with this guy standing about 3ft away. I was just thinking right on! My kids are safe! Oh crap, now what do I do?
