  1. I'm glad the guy survived, crappy news about the dog though.

Out of all my years in the bush hunting and fishing etc, nothing ever scared me as much as getting rushed by an aggressive female bear. Seriously I don't think my heartrate returned to normal for at least 4 hours after the experience. That was just a few blocks from my house too, and I was with my kids. Thankfully it ended well and nobody was hurt/dead. Because I was unprepared for an incident, the only weapon I had was a lousy fillet knife, lol.

When a bear comes from 100 yards to 5 feet away in just a few seconds, it's quite the experience. Even with a gun, I'm not that confident I could shoot anything other then the head, anyhow.

Where I live in NW Ontario, the bears are becoming more aggressive and it just seems to come with the shift in nature. We now have an explosion of deer in the area, as well as rabbits. With them came cougars. My whole life I never saw a cougar in the wild, now in the last 7 years I've seen 3. The last one being two years ago, again, just by my house, actually almost the exact same spot the bear rushed me at, lol. Wolves as well, just seems like an explosion in the population lately, and all the animals mentioned are pushing more and more into populated areas.

  2. We had alot of snow this year, and during the melt boy did the river get high! Now it's been raining like crazy and pushing the water even higher!!!

Now, we went out the other day for opener, and we did ok on the walleye. But it was clear they had not spawned yet.

This is the latest I've ever seen for a walleye spawn on Rainy river.

Next week is the Emo Walleye Classic and I'm sure there will be MUCH bigger bags of fish this year than in previous years. I'm hoping it doesn't negatively effect the spawn though.

So far it's been a weird season on the river, frig, even the sturgeon arent spawning yet.

Water temps are around 48 and dropping fast as the water continues to rise

  3. These are some of my rules.

Always bring food on a fishing trip, nothing worse then traveling a long distance to fish only to be starving half way through the day and unable to concentrate on fishing/the experience.

Make sure your essentials are laid out in close proximity ie line cutters, pliers etc. and if fishing in a boat with a partner have the same utilities at the front and back of the boat.

Always have spare line ready to go.

Get all your gear/food etc ready the day before the trip. Then just a quick inspection is needed before takeoff to be sure your not forgetting anything.

I always pack extra glasses (I think that was already mentioned)

I always pack alot of water and suncreen too. When its super hot and calm weather and your fishing all day, you'll def. need these things

  4. Nanofil is a wicked line for jigging when it's not too much of an abrasive bottom.

Other than that I don't get any other use out of it.

That being said, I like the 8lb test. I tried 12 and it didnt behave like the 8lb at all. But thats on a spinning set up, I've never used it on a baitcaster.

I just use the double palomar and never have issues with it, other than the first time I tried the line and didnt make a good accurate knot

  5. Quick strikes with 2 trebles are certainly legal in MB. I was weighing the fish for the event....a 12lb northern won 10K yesterday....quite a turnout. I helped drill the holes all 3760 of them Friday then had to reopen them Saturday am....who needs the gym. This is a great event with a lot of fish caught each year. The $50K "hidden weight" prize was missed by a few ounces.

yeah I tried to stop over to say hello but I was way too busy lol. I was only about 50 yards over from ya.

It was a great event for sure!!! The turnout was incredible. Turns out our biggest mistake was having no smelts. Seems like most of the good fish seemed to come on smelts.

I was pretty amped that a kid won the early bird $1000 prize! I was happy to see it go to a youngen!

Again great job on the event, that was alot of fun, but boy was that wind tough to face!

  6. The Quick Strike Rig would be my choice for rigging, but not sure how it would do with barbless hooks...

    http://outdoorcanada.ca/17016/blogs/on-the-water-online/trophy-pike-quick-strike-rigs-and-so-much-more

    Good luck in the tournament!

yeah, and its only one hook, so quickstrike rigs are outta the question.

I got some great advice from another board member though! Our gameplan is set, rods are ready and the flasher is charged! Only thing left do do is pack up and fish hard!!!

  7. I'm fishing Falcon Lake derby this saturday, and it's a biggest fish wins all. I looked through all the previous winners and they are all pike.

So I'm planning on fishing a feeder creek next to a shallow bay. It's barbless hooks with no live bait, as per the regs.

I would like to use 6-8" frozen ciscos, but for the life of me I can't figure out how I'm going to rig these ciscos???

Also, on the Manitoba site, I cannot find whether or not a treble hook is considered one hook like here in Ontario???

Any ideas, links etc a greatly appreciated!

And good fishing to all of you going out this day and this weekend!!!!

  8. I can't remember how I did it? But I initially switched to the new photobucket and hated it. Then somehow I was able to switch back to the old photobucket.

Wish I could tell you how, but I honestly can't remember???

original photobucket was 10X better IMO

  9. Well, figured out some good patterns at a derby in Big Island Lake of the Woods last weekend, so me and some family members decided to head out again with lesser crowds.

Head out tomorrow am, and were gonna try to hit walleye/crappie on a few good reefs we found. The deadstick/lipless crank combo was on fire the day after the derby (D'oh).

Trying out a new to me Vexilar flasher tomorrow too, can't wait!!!

Who else is heading out? and what are y'all fishing for?

  10. My biggest is 32" at 12lbs. But I've caught alot right near that length/weight.

Last year prefishing with my bud down in the sault narrows, he hooked a monster walleye. As it approached the boat I wished we had a longer net. I made one scoop at her and missed. The fish then broke the line at the top of the water about 6 feet from the boat.

The tailsplash as she escaped was as heartbreaking as it was a thing of beauty.

I'd guess 35" but its tough to tell on a fish like that. It was a spring pig too.

    We were both very bummed

  11. Even 'roids - help repair muscle. Not just for bodybuilders. Think of a 50 year old guy with a sore back and arms trying to keep up with 20-30 somethings.

    Yessir!

Even HGH helps rejuvenate joints/ligaments/tendons/synovial fluid etc

I think that could certainly help a person that spends literally thousands of hours standing in a boat, year after year, for many many years

  12. The sport / competition debate aside - PED's could give an advantage to tournament fishermen.

Do you fish better, with more concentration at the beginning of the day, or 8 hours in? How does your body feel early in the day vs. the end of the day? Does it affect your decision making?

As much as I love to fish, sometimes I am sore and tired at the end of the day, especially if it's been a long day. I think most people would have the same experiences.

It sounds funny at first reading, but it's not that far out there.

thats exactly what I was referring too.

Imagine the nerves associated with say the Bassmaster Classic? All those anglers are very talented anglers, but a benzo or anxiolytic agent takes the nerves off, what are you left with? A confident angler

And kickingfrog, thats why I mentioned modafinil. It's used as a stimulant but also increases focus. In a big tourny situation, that would certainly be a huge benefit. Hell even fighter pilots use it, is that considered a "sport"? lol

  13. you did say he was 11 right.....???...wow what a collection so far....lol....and the addiction will start very early!!

    wtg dad!!

Yeah, he's 11. He's already addicted, lol, he loves fishing, and he's very good at it too! He's got a fair amount of tackle to boost, but I don't mind rewarding him with things that help him do what he loves to do.

One thing I love to see is that he really appreciated any fish out there. He loves smallies, largies, pike, laketrout, perch and walleye all in the same.

Oh, and he loves tying knots, lol. Kid knows more knots then I do, even ties his owns harnesses!

Thanks for the kudos, but I'm sure many of the parents on this board do just the same for their children
