Great to see a Canadian company forging ahead
fishinggeek replied to irishfield's topic in General Discussion
More satisfied Le Baron customers! I wonder who owns it. I would certainly congratulate them on a job well done for saving us working folk a couple of bucks over the years. I admit their selection is not like BPS, and if you're into specialty things like fly fishing you'll probably be out of luck, but for the majority of Ontario anglers it can't be beat! I appreciate everyone updating me on new deals as they come up, and I'll try and do the same. -
Aluminum Boat Hulls - Welded Versus Rivets
fishinggeek replied to fishinggeek's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, keep them coming, and sorry to open such a can of worms! I'll save my marine plywood versus vinyl/other synthetic floors for another day. -
From doing a bit of research into boats, it seems welded might be better than riveted, at least based on price. Can anyone explain the other differences? Are welded hulls stronger, last longer, lighter, etc?
-
Keep them coming! Thanks for all the input. So far I like the sounds of Honda 4-strokes are good, Legend is no good, and maybe buying from the States. What is it like to buy from the States? Is there a lot of paperwork? Are there brokers that will do it for a small fee?
-
I might get a an aluminum boat and 4-stroke outboard. I really want a double windshield model. Which makes of boat and motor are the cheapest in price? I'm more than willing to not buy a package, and get the boat and motor separately if that option is less expensive.

I couldn't find the section that says no deadbait longer than 5.1 inches. Is it in there?
-
Yes Le Baron is the best. I make a point of getting practically all of my gear there, and if I go to BPS or some other place to browse, you can be sure I have my Le Baron catalogue in hand to compare prices. Most of the time Le Baron is cheaper for the exact same item, and when it isn't, the prices are usually the same. Rent or no rent, I can't justify paying more money for the exact same gear that I can get cheaper.
-
Is Fishing World in Hamilton as cheap as Le Baron? I'd hate to drive to Hamilton to find out it wasn't. Sometimes I find a steal on sale somewhere, but in general everyone's more expensive than Le Baron, even when on sale. Does Fishing World have an online catalogue like Le Baron does to make it easier to compare? Thanks.

Anyone know if I have to pay the duties when I order from BPS online? Also what is the shipping like? I couldn't find it on the site.
-
Wow I thought it was such a simple question! Thanks for everyone's info and opinion. I will definitely be looking into Cabelas now. I just assumed the shipping would wipe out any savings that could be had but I should have looked into it myself. I see how small retailers sometimes must charge more money, but as a consumer, I don't feel I should pay so much more for the exact same product. And as far as fishing advice and spots and stuff like that, that is why I come onto here, watch shows, read magazines, have fishing friends, and get experience. I know they are local, but personally I would not pay for fishing advice, which is really what I am doing if choose to buy tackle at such inflated prices from local stores. That is just my opinion though, and I fully respect others who choose otherwise.
-
Le Baron is the best in terms of price for a retail store. I have no complaints about the service myself. It isn't service with a smile, but it's decent. Browse the catalogue, decide to buy, go there and buy it. I really can't justify spending far more at practically all other tackle stores (I won't name names) for exactly the same items. And most of us buy quite a bit of tackle in a year, so it really adds up.
-
Have a lot on my wish list. Anyone know when the next no-tax sale will be at Le Baron's? I'm hoping for November in time for Christmas.

With all the talk of poaching, I was reading these ministry convictions. I was surprised how many commercial operators were convicted, including seafood operators, restaurants, lodges, guides, and marinas. I will not mention any names of these companies, but I'm sure some are familiar to us, and we might have been customers of their's in the past. I suggest using their search tool to find previous criminals before dealing with these companies. Personally, I will not be a customer to any of these companies who have harmed our natural resources.

Oh and beauty fish Raf. WTG. I'm still working on my first.
-
I barely have any experience, so I was surprised that it's ok. It really does look funny, and if I were a muskie, I think I'd be on to me. But when you call it a "built in figure 8", it sounds better. Thanks guys.
-
I think I might be doing something wrong here. When I cast a deep muskie crankbait, everything's fine until I get close to the boat. Then it goes under the boat (under my feet), and as I bring it closer, does some circle on the way up. Is there anyway to stop this? It just doesn't look right to me.

In case you weren't aware, I think Uncle Josh makes a similar product. I was wondering how you rig such a bait? I think I've seen Pete Bowman on FNC rig them with a single hook and a treble trailer but he didn't explain how to do it, and I couldn't figure it out in the split second I saw the rig.

Like most of us, I have collected a bunch of fishing stuff I don't ever use. A lot of it has been dollar store discount stuff that will not see water if I keep it. Is there anywhere I can donate this? I remember seeing Bass Pro having a deal where you donate old reels for a rebate on a new reel, but I don't think that applied to things like lures, which is what I have the most of.

Actually that pike was caught on Toronto Island 4 years ago. It was fairly far out by the ferry dock, but I saw him bring it in and take those pictures. Huge!
-
Thanks for all the help! Though I know many didn't appreciate his posts here, I have to give him props for coming up with some crazy spots to fish.
-
A while ago someone started their own board about GTA pond bassing. Anyone have the link still? I can't seem to find it.
-
With all the posts on the whistling trout, I thought I might take the mrs to teach her how to fish and to have her actually catch something. What's the closest area with a decent spring sucker population? No honey holes needed, but something where we wouldn't have to wade or walk through bog (for her sake not mine). Thanks.
-
Thanks for the advice! I tried googling first but couldn't find anything close. I found Washago (Trent River) and Dunnville (Grand River), but both are a bit too far from Toronto. It's weird how far I'll go for good Muskie, Trout, or Walleye, but for cats, especially my first time trying, I don't want to invest too much gasoline at over a dollar a litre.

With BBR's entertaining report, I'm thinking of having a go at catfishing. I've never tried it before. What's the closest location to the GTA for channel cats? Also, this might sound like a stupid question, but how can I tell the difference between a channel cat and a bullhead? To me, ugly is ugly...
