  1. Working good so far... How is the little Johnson working?

    Glad to hear! I havent even touched the johnson. Its still hanging right where i put it when you brought it here....lol

    I think that this conversation could be deemed "inappropriate" ;)

    JK. Nice silver bud :)

  2. As I sit here in a screened in porch somewhere in Seguin, I see a massive cloud of blackbastards hovering over the warming Q 20 ft away. I will need to suit up while tending the steak, retreat to the screened in porch, spray bomb & unsuit before opening the door to the cottage. Worst fly season I've seen in seven years here.

    But totally worth it :) Despite winds, rain, bugs & babysitting newbies, best opener ever !! Everybody landed pike & walleye. Mostly walleye :)

  3. I can tell you categorically.. you'd better have a bug hood or lots of alcohol in your system. After spending 8 hours outside today I can tell you they are the worst that they have been in a good decade.

    Thx for the categorical confirmation Wayne. With the wet & late spring I'd figured we were in for an epic blackbastard season this year in Seguin :(. As alcohol is not an option for the grandkids 2-6 yrs, looks like I'm shopping on Amazon for full body armour for them. Keeping them home is not an option as the other Grampa has got them revved up for a cottage visit :(.

  4. The insurance company will offer you the average Blue Book or NADA value and that's it.

    Not true. Insurance companies maintain a collective database for vehicle values. Claims agents make initial value assesments based on their "experience/decision allowance". Senior agents have a higher decision allowance. If you're not satisfied with the initial assesments request escalation and be prepared to provide documented comparables (dealership postings of used cars, autotrader listings, receipts for repairs/maintenance/new tires etc). IF YOU DONT ASK, YOU DONT GET.

    BTW, don't necessarily expect a broker to go to bat for you. There's no money in it for them. You need to deal directly with the insurer and be persistent.

    I would be shocked if they insisted on fixing your vehicle. Do your homework and start researching a fair 'settlement' that you're prepared to settle for.

  5. So when I get deemed as "garbage" for asking a question about an "extension cord" that I was clearly unsure of? One persons trash is another's treasure... ;)

    I owe you an apology Geoff. My intent was to show the most popular sites & yours was top five. I never intended to suggest your post was garbage and offend you. 'Garbage' was intended to be associated with the political posts and I have edited the post accordingly.

    Most sincer apologies,

    Simon

  6. We are working on the political threads. i am hoping that people can be nice and talk to each other as adults. We are faced with winternet right now and once we can fish again the political threads seem to dwindle. We try very hard not to say No completely on any topic but if it keeps getting out of hand then we will ban them and hope everyone understands.

    In the mean time lets go fishing for bacon.

    Thanks

    Art

    Sorry, but You sound somewhatlike a politician Art ;) Lots of talk, no action. Not being personal here, but you've threatened to shut down political posts countless times before, yet continually allow the "same usual suspects" to carry on without consequence.

    Currently the most popular threads* as of today's front page (my version) are:

    Politics: http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83690

    Fishing = 130 replies, 4732 views

    Despite clear rules about political threads and most importantly, the general memberships clear & loud disdain for this garbage;

    It's my opinion that OFC management will never ban this political trash as its obvious that click counts, not fishing, keep this forum funded.

    With the exception of municipal politics/bylaws impacting fisherman directly, you want find any OFC garbage on these sites;

    As mentioned in previous posts here, many members including myself, have migrated elsewhere. You can find most of us on the two fishing forums above.

  7. Hey All,

    Thx for the PM's (working my way through these), best wishes and encouragement for Sean.

    For those of you who may not be familiar with his situation & circumstances posted in older threads, heres some background.

    In February of 2013, Sean & his foreman were travelling from Edmonton to Fort McMurray. A solo driver was travelling southbound & crossed the centre line on Hwy 63 west of Lac la Biche. Two F350's collide head on :( Sean's foreman was VSA & pronounced at the scene. SB driver was transported by ambulance to LLB & Sean was airlifted by STARS to Edmonton on life support. Comatose for two months and emerged slowly over the next six months. Traumatic brain injury & paraplegia define his current condition to this day & forever more :(

    If there is a 'saving grace' in this tragedy, it is this: Sean & Ken were in a company vehicle & on company 'time' when the accident occurred. WCB AB 'catastrophic event benefits' program is above & beyond any other known workers compensation plan or automobile insurance benefits. If this occurred under any other circumstances or God forbid, Ontario, Sean would have been 'written off' & forgotten in some god foresaken long term care facility. And I would likely be in jail. Ken's family was extremely well looked after & Sean will continue to recover in a private neurological facility without rehabilitation limits or spending caps. Basically, whatever his therapy team & family require to enhance his recovery and quality of life, WCB provides for Sean's lifetime.

    Further but most regrettably :( Sean is a very wealthy young man through various 'settlements' and an annual tax free lifetime income via WCB. Our duties as his court appointed guardians is to ensure his assets are invested to assure he wants for nothing. Given his love of cottage life & fishing, a 'kick ass' 100% accessible cottage' "Seanshine", is in the near future :) :)

    So long story short.........

    @ Rick & Johnny D,

    Your concerns & intentions are beyond generous, gracious & noble. Thank you from our families to yours. Please know your intentions are truly & sincerely appreciated. However, we must graciously decline as there are countless families who are in much more need. We see and converse with families in similar situations that rely on WSIB (Ontario), OHIP or automobile liability insurance. It's a dammed shame how they are treated :(

    God bless you both :) Assuming the devil don't get ya first ;)

    @ Spincast,

    Bang on! It's a hunch, but we're confident that this is a game changer :)

    Et al,

    Thank you for best wishes and kind words.

    Sincerely,

    Simon

    ps. I recently 'counselled' a family who lost a husband/father to a workplace fatality recently. Besides a truly personal & rewarding experience, I've found my new 'calling'. If any members have family/friends dealing with a 'catastrophic event' involving WSIB, I have a very thorough knowledge of WSIB/WCB legislation. Feel free to contact me via PM. I'm paying it forward :)

  8. Well, I’ve been somewhat absent from OFC and friends for a while due to being fully engaged and immersed in Sean’s ongoing recovery and therapy. He’s been involved in a McMaster Neurological Study over the past year and through various testing and observations, he has been diagnosed with “locked in syndrome”. Basically what this translates to is that he is aware and cognizant of his surroundings and is able to understand verbal communication but he is only able to respond via simple yes or no eye blinks.

    Long story short, after much research and consultations with speech therapists as well as reaching out directly to the manufacturer, we’ve decided to move forward with this amazing technology and software developed by Tobii Dynavox. I’ll let the following videos look after the description:

    How it works;

    If we can get a “Hello Mum”, the investment is priceless;

    And this is just way to0 cute not to share;

    Initially we are just starting with software that trains for ‘eye gazing’ and moving on to communication software. If Sean is able to manage and navigate the technology, he will be able to communicate via Facebook & Skype, browse the internet, turn on his TV or iPod, and control his environment (lighting & HVAC).

    He still has a long road but his 28 yrs young and has science and technology on his side :)

    Edited to repair links. Can't seem to get the final two links to embed??

  9. Mine is now 9 seasons old.... man where does the time go. I JUST had to replace one of my foot pedals batteries this summer. My "key fob" and second pedal are on the original batteries. I downrigg for Lakers with mine on calm days... sitting in the back of my 22' Lund and controlling the trolling motor usually with the key fob. Been zero issues, other than you need to keep an eye on the housing screws for tightness.

    ^^^ What Wayne says. I bought the same model used from Tybo 2 years back and didn't install it until this fall :(. If I knew what I was missing, I would of installed it sooner. Zero operational issues & can operate from anywhere in my 21' Sylvan.

    funny you should post this....I just happened to be checking mine out and here is an annoying little glitch: To turn the whole unit on you must use the remote/foot control (as far as I can tell!). The little battery (dime shaped thing) in my remote seems to be dead...so now I can't turn the unit on! Since I am heading out tomorrow 5 am looks like I will be without a trolling motor until I can find time to replace this unique little battery.

    As far as the communication between the remote and the unit when I have a battery...I would say it is ok, not great. You eventually get used to how sensitive it works. I will be honest, sometimes I don't bother with the control at all (other than to turn it on). I just manually grab the thing by the "head" and point it in the direction I want, after all I am standing right at the front of the boat beside it.

    Those 'dime shaped things' (CR2032?) are readily available in any hardware or pharmacy stores ;) & my unit operates via fob or foot control independently. Sometimes a re-read of the manual can be very helpful in figuring out 'glitches'. Chances are you bypassed a required set up process??

    This the second motor guide on my boat and would not hesitate in recommending their products.

  10. Nice fish. Hope you didn't take too much slime off with the tail grab.

    My gloves have rubber on em so they don't strip much slime

    Yeah...right!

    Edited in the interest of recognizing Mike's accomplishment :) & keeping the thread 'alive' despite someone's attempt to poop on it :(

  11. Hey Pete,

    Good timing! I'm in the home stretch of giving the 25 yr old Mistress a makeover. I'll save you a lot of time and research, i.e iBoats.com.

    - Marine grade/CAC (minimal copper content) plywood is heavy. 60+ lbs a sheets & then you have to source type CAC sealer for cut edges. Lowe's has CAC (equivalent to marine) plywood but I couldn't find the appropriate sealer.

    - Commercial grade exterior plywood i.e spruce for roofing, is perfectly fine as long as you double coat epoxy resin on both faces & edges. I paid $20 a sheet for 1/2 inch @ Home Depot. If you're going to use your 3/4, give it a rough sand & tack cloth treatment.

    - Best price on 2 part epoxy I found was @ http://www.foghmarine.com You should be able to pick up a small 2 part mixture for around $40 (I needed more).

    - As for adhesive, the stuff on the left is difficult to source & $30+ per can. Lepages on the right is the 'same stuff' & readily available @ Home Depot for $20. Good for vinyl & carpet.

    As for bunk replacement, I replaced the 25 yr old bunks last year with 2x6 cedar wrapped in marine carpet on the submersed surface & puck board on the exposed (above water) face. I'll try to find a pic.

    & I have excess 1/2 plywood lots of 1/2 SS staples if you need some. I'll take a +50" musky in trade ;)

  12. Not that I know of Dan.

    I can't imagine the extra coverage would be expensive, I just want to be sure I'm covered.

    Who'd have guessed a trip in an air ambulance could cost 80 grand.

    That seems to be a big number Lew? Maybe an extra zero got added (innocently enough) along the way?

    Anyways, on topic here's some food for thought:

    Sean's 'repatriation' cost from YEG to YYZ after the 2013 accident was just over $31K. Crew consisted of 2 RN's & 2 pilots. Apparently if scheduling allowed for a return repatriation, costs would have been reduced significantly. That was not the case then but fortunately, all costs were covered by WCB Alberta.
