Went out yesterday morning on Rice Lake. I got on the water by 5:30am and was hoping to get a few fish on my fly rod as well I was gonna do some dropshotting and casts a few cranks. I headed to the North shore and started throwning cranks in hope for some bass and walleye it was maybe 20 minutes before I boated my first walleye of the day. Then after that I grabed my fly rod and start to work a top water mouse patteren. I worked along the shore line for about 10 minutes and laid down a long cast which put my mouse right in front of a dock then stripped it in once making it pop in the water and bamm a smallmouth inhales it and the fight is on. It was by far the best fight I've had this year with a bass. I tell ya you haven't fought a bass till you do it on a fly rod! After that I headed to the South shore to throw cranks in the chop and I was able to get a few more walleye one largemouth and a few bluegills... Here are some pic's enjoy

Been out with Matt Mitchell who run Mitchell's Sportfishing a few in the last couple of weeks. We went out on Saturday morning with clients a Dad and Son and within 10 minutes of having the rods down we hit a good size king. The son who was I think 13/14 years old reel in his first king and biggest fish of his life, he was so stoked about catching this fish it made the day, as well with the Dad he also caught his biggest fish of his life. We were able to get the Dad and Son 7 fish as they only wanted a 3 hour trip. After we dropped them off at the dock it was our turn to go get some king as we both have derby tickets. It was choppy on the lake but we were able to bring in 5 more in 2 1/2 hours on the lake but nothing to bring to the scale. Then went back out Last night to try again to get that derby king and we boated 6/7 fish biggest being 27lbs not big enough. We had a 25lbs king jump right beside the boat I got it on video but it was to far away to really see I tryed taking some still photos from the video so check it out..

Went out in the Morning last Sunday and was able to find a few walleye in around 10fow and was able to boat around 10 or so walleye as well with a few bass.. All and all was a good day. I hook all walleye on a Fat Rap and hooked up with the bass using a Trigger X leach dropshotting in about 20fow.

I've been using a 7 weight rod for about 7 years now for steelhead in the Ganny to bass out on Rice lake it is your all around fly rod even good enough for pike and muskie. A good buddy of mine had used a 5wt for steelhead for years but due to spending a lot of time fighting the fish he went to a 7wt and he said it was a huge differents. Over all a good 7wt is all you will need and make sure if you get a new reel to hook up with a large arbor reel so your able to pick up more line when the fish run in at you and try to get a 2nd spool so your able to change from floating line to sinking line. The more you get into fly fishing your gonna want more rod's and reels. If I were you I would be going down to http://www.grandrivertroutfitters.com/ talk to Ken Collins is a great guy and when it comes to fly fishing in Ontario he is your man!

Rice for sure lots of big bass. As for bass boats going to fast by you I always felt the same way why don't they slow down but if you ever notice its better for a bass boat to be going fast due to less wake off the boat cause hardly any of the boat is in the water but if they were to slow down the whole boat would be creating a bigger wake. Next time your out check out the wake a bass boat creates while going fast and then while slow.

Ridgeview out of Roseneath great boats as well if your going to rent more than once I think your 10th outing is free and rates go down after the first rental.. If your going from Bewdley I suggest Ben from BJ Tackle.

You are right Mike and thats just what happend I ran over to the youngster when I seen him fighting the fish I unhooked him, took a quick measurement and it was let go.. The youngster knew it was oos and was just happy to catch a nice fish.. Not one fish was kept that day, expect all the gobies. -

kids fishing -
On Saturday Hastings had there Kids and Cops fishing day. I went out to give my time and help the kids catch a few fish. It was a great event as they had trophys for biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish. I spent the whole day running to kid to kid who had caught a fish so I could take the hook out and measure it so we knew who has biggest and who had smallest and who had the most. The event ran from 9am to about 1pm. Halfway through one kid caught a 12 inch smallmouth which held big fish till a 13 inch mudcat was caught by a 4/5 year old it was awsome to see. Lots of fish were caught so the kids were having a lot of fun as well a lot of goby's were caught. A lot of great prizes were gave away and all in all it was a great event in which I plan to attend for years to come.

The Ganaraska River has a great run a salmon every year and with them your able to hook into huge brown trout as well. Last year was a great year for Coho's as well. If you ever plan to make a trip to the Ganny contact me and we can head out. The best time is during a good rain fall as the river level becomes higher the salmon swarm in the rivers.

It does look old but its a small picture which makes it hard to see.. I'll pay $30 for it and make good use of the flies lol.
