After a dozen years, I think I might be back
fisher replied to jimvanm's topic in General Discussion
It's not exactly in the city but Heart Lake Conservation area in Brampton is a great place to bring a kid (and the whole family too) - about a 30 minute drive from downtown Toronto. http://www.trca.on.ca/Website/TRCA/ParksAn...amp;Language=EN You can fish for pan fish - lots of sunfish and rock bass, even Rainbow Trout and Largemouth Bass. You can also barbecue as there are many picnic areas. I would call them first to get up-to-date info (like time they are open, fees, amenities, etc...). Trout can be caught on powerbait (Canadian Tire) or canned corn, just fished off of bottom using a weight and hook and launched as far as you can. No doubt you will see others fishing exclusively for Trout but the panfish are plentiful right near shore. Another choice is Glen Haffy on Airport Road - they have Rainbow Trout only which can be easily caught using small worms and hooks (salmon egg hooks work really well) fished under a bobber. I stress small (skinny) worms as the large dew worms they sell are in mind too big for the fish. I usually bring my 5 year old there for some fun and we always catch fish. There are also picnic/barbecure areas at this park too for the family to enjoy. http://www.trca.on.ca/Website/TRCA/ParksAn...tpos=0&rsn= Otherwise, if it is just for a couple of hours, then as mentioned before, Grenadier Pond at High Park is a good place. Have fun - it's a great sport to enjoy with your child - as you already have noticed. Since I was about 4 up to this day, my father and I still spend loads of time fishing together. I am now 34. I must say that the sport has made our relationship ten times stronger. I feel that I have already developed the same bond with my 5 year old. This is evident when I return from a fishing outing that did not include him (for one reason or another) and he realizes it and asks "did you go fishing today? Or when I am preparing for an outing (ie. getting the gear ready, boat prepped, etc.. and he asks, "are you going fishing tomorrow?" Those are the hard times but at least I know he wants to go fishing and that it is not something that I am forcing on him (not that any kid would not want to go fishing). Anyway, bottom line is that we are now 3 generations enjoying the same sport together - it is truly great. So enjoy it. -
I guess that is the issue - it is the patients that are not taken care of that get the headlines and are at the root of the debates. A Universal Health Care system is the way to go - it is a fundamental right and should be defended at all times. I would hate to see Canada move away from that.

Any fishing in and around Tottenham?
fisher replied to Billy - Curtiss's topic in General Discussion
I may be mistaken but I think there are rainbow trout in that pond. Definitely perch, other pan fish and BIG turtles. Fun for the kids with all the pan fish. I have never caught a trout there but have seen some bigger fish jumping in the middle of the lake (I think they are trout - never really asked the park people though but someone mentioned that is what they were when we both saw one jump). Let us know how you make out. -
Funny this post came up - I just got my 40 HP rebuilt and was told to go through 2 tanks of gas before it would be considered broken in. Since I troll a lot on Lake Ontario I need the motor broken in before I can do that type of fishing with it. So this weekend I went out and tried to waste as much gas as possible (to get through the 2 tanks) by criss/crossing Georgina Bay at various speeds. After about 6 hours of this - stopping occassionally, I only managed to go through 1/2 a tank (about 10 litres). I have 2 tanks on board - you should probably invest in a 2nd tank. Less time refilling/and peace of mind by knowing there is less chance of running out.

I agree about the knowledge sharing/experiences - So after all that, I think the consensus is that my motor should be okay (despite the fact that it shut off by itself when I brought it close to full throtlle). Phew!

I could be wrong regarding the cylinders...not sure how many I have but pretty sure he said 4 pistons (I have 4 spark plugs if that helps) - Obviously I am not good at mechanical stuff - that's why I brought it to the mechanic (lol). My motor is oil injected...he did not mention anything about the oil injection kicking in later. But wouldn't the injection work right off the bat - how would the motor know if you had mixed oil into the gas?

Some may recall I had a bogging issue with my 40 HP Mercury outboard. I brought it to a marina and they fixed it by rebuilding it - new pistons, impeller, fuel pump, spark plugs, etc... They said my compression was bad on 3 of the cylinders (?) and since they were working on it, they should do all 4 pistons as the other showed sign of wear. I did not know, because they did not mention it to me, but after getting my motor back, I was supposed to break it in (now it makes sense after having been told it) but at the time I was anxious to get the boat back and did not think twice and I took it on a ride on Lake Ontario. After a 10 minute boat ride on the lake, I starting doing some trolling for Salmon (did not catch any by the way). Anyway, after about an hour of trolling, I decided to give it a run to see how it performs (I now know this was not a good idea). After a few minutes at close to top speed, the motor shuts down. I start it up again and after a minute or so at close to top speed again, it shuts down again. I now decide to call the Marina from the lake and ask what is worng. It's then that they tell me that I should not have trolled or tried to run it too hard. I was supposed to break it in slowly (changing speeds once on plane, etc...). When I asked if I did damage to the motor, they replied likely not and that it's probably plugged up somewhere and to bring it in for a clean up (spark plugs, diaphram, etc...). That is where my boat is now.... They said that once I get the boat back I would need to break it in by going through 2 tanks of gas at speeds that are varied (not too low or not too high) using a fuel mix that has a higher mix of oil than normal (100 ML of oil per gallon of fuel). After that, I should be good to go. My question to the board is...is my motor going to be okay? Thanks as always for your input.

Personally I think the sentence you have at the bottom of your post is offensive: "I used to be a lifegaurd..... But some blue kid got me fired" While you may think it is funny, I do not.

Well I brought it into the Marina last night and now it is up to them. They figure they should be able to look at it within a week.
-
Great news - Discount RV and Marine on Keele St in Maple told me to drop the boat off tonight and that they will be able to look at my boat in about a week. If it indeed is the carbs - what would be the approx price to clean out the carbs (I think there are two) on my 1992 40 horsepower Merc?
-
I change the filter every spring as well - changed it again this weekend after the issue just in case it was a dud - but still same issue.
-
I checked the vent on the tank and it was open - and the bulb was nice and firm. I also had replaced the fuel filter - because I thought the same thing- cheap, inexpensive part. I tried again, and still bogging.
-
I have been researching cleaning carbs on the net and found many references to using SeaFoam/Merc Carb Cleaner as a first step in trying to resolve the issue I am having. Does anyone have an opinion/eperience on this proposed solution?

I stabilized the gas tank over the winter using a fuel stabilizer (as I have done for the last 6 years) and used it this spring. This was my 3rd trip out and now am experiencing the bogging issue. The previous year's gas has already been consumed. I read that stabilizing the gas over winter was the proper thing to do and that it would be okay to use in the spring - is that not good advice?

Is this something someone could do themselves? It sounds simple...but then again don't most things? I mean, at first glance, how difficult does being married sound ?

Was out on Lake Simcoe last week and my 1992 40 HP Merc was bogging down - both at low speed and high speed. When starting out, it seemed as though I was dragging a 1000 lb anchor. When I finally got it up to some sort of plane (which took a long time), it was not reaching it's normal top speed. A couple of times it just died on me at the higher speed. At idle/slow troll, it too would die. I don't think it's the fuel line, as it would start up again without any priming of the bulb, etc...but I would need to choke it first (which I normally did when the motor worked fine). Is it the carbs - maybe gummed up? I have had the motor for about 6 years and never got them cleaned before. I looked up older posts and saw that MoriaRiverMan had a similar issue - never did see what the resolution was. Anyone have an idea if my totally inexperienced diagnosis may be correct? Can you recommend a mechanic to look at it. Are there any freelance mechanics willing to come see it on their off hours - obviously I'd be willing to pay for their time/work? I tried calling Leisure Marine in Woodbridge (near where I live) but they won't look at it for at least 2-3weeks. I need to get this fixed sooner than then. Thanks.

Under 18 years old, what is catch limit for Simcoe Whities?

No offence taken...just figured someone was bound to point it out. And it serves as a good reminder to everyone. -

Thanks - that's great. Now why couldn't I find that when I tried searching google/MNR site! -

I hear you - I knew that was coming. Rest assured, I want him to catch his fish. That is part of the fun - and teaching. I'll bring an extra rod or two just in case one goes into the drink. -
Put it this way...would those same people keep the whitefish that was caught anywhere other than IN its mouth if a CO was watching? I doubt it...unless they wanted a fine.

Brian, I really appreciate the time you have taken to go into so much detail and for answering every one of my questions. I will definitely print out this thread and take it with me when boat shopping (as I am sure a few others will be saving a copy as well). Now, if I could, I'd like to send you some tylenol for your head ache Again, thanks to you and others for their responses.

125 HP and 9.9 HP Mercuries - both outboards.

Going to a boat dealer to look at a used 2001 Bayliner Trophy 1802. My questions are: - The dealer indicated that they will provide a 30 day warranty - is that normal or should it be longer? - Anyone have/know about this boat and if so, any comments/advise? - Dealer said they would do a compression test on the motors (115 hp and 9.9 hp) in front of me. Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should expect/look for? - Any other advise as to what/how I should inspect the boat? They said they would let me take it for a ride on the lake for 45 minutes-1 hour to try it out. - the 2" ball on my hitch (which is a 3500 lb rated hitch) says 2000 lbs on it - is that the tongue weight or the allowed weight of the boat being trailered? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the anticipated responses, Fisher

I deal with the Bank of Nova Scotia Branch at Highway 400 and Major Mackenzie in Vaughan. They are newly open and I think for that reason their rates are the best when shopped - trying to drum up a base of business. Try them out. Call the Manager directly - Cora - 905-303-8250. Frank
