  1. Hit the French River for the first time last weekend. Horseshoe Bay area, east of 69.

It was cold and wet on Saturday. We had to wait out some thunder and lightning for a few hours in the morning. It still beats sitting at home.

I was really hoping to hook into a pickerel or two. No luck though.

We managed a dozen small mouths, and a hand full of hammer handles. I tried out those new Mustad Slow Death hooks. I really liked the way they work. That's what I cought all the small mouth on. Unfortunately, I was targeting the eyes, and for that reason, I was letting the fish nibble a bit more before setting the hook. A couple of the bass took the hook way to deep. Shore lunch….

We were only able to fish for about 6 hours in total because of bad weather and excessive drinkin.

I’m not done up there yet. I know the pickerel are there somewhere. Next time I think I’ll go for a week, instead of two days! I’ve only started to target pickerel this year, and have still yet to catch one :wallbash:

No pictures, cuz none of the fish where worthy.

Sorry for the poor report. Next time there will be lots of pictures of eyes, and massive muskies :asshat:

  2. I just spent my lunch break at Simcoe Bait and Tackle.

Picked up a worm blower, 3 dozen worms, and 2 packs of Mustad Slow Death hooks.

Not sure if I should blow up the worms when using the slow death hooks. May screw up the cork screw effect of the slow death presentation.

I have all weekend to figure it out!

  3. Thanks for the tips gents.

I have a question about the Lindy Rig.

I have seen a few people that use "worm blowers" to make the worm float when using the lindy rig.

Any one use the "worm blowers" with good results?? If so, are they easy to use?? Just curious..

  4. Headin to the French this weekend.

I was planning on getting a few dozen worms. Was also thinkin about grabbing a bag of Minnows, and maybe some leaches.

I plan on targeting the eyes mostly.

For those with some experiance on the French, what live bait would you use this time of year????

I was going to use jigs, drop shot rigs, pickrel rigs, worm harness, and walleye killers. Just not sure what to tip them with.

Any tips to help me land my first eye would be great!!

    Thanks,

  5. I'm not sure if when you said "same location" u meant the french in general or the area that I specified.. if thats the case.. we use the Dokis Marina located off the Dokis reserve road a little outside of Noelville to dock and park.. cheap rates to park for the week too ... also has a little general store..handy when you're almost an hour away from civilization. :)

Not really the exact same location.

We plan on hitting the water as close to 69 as possiblle, then heading east to Horseshoe Bay area. I don't know if we'll make it that far up the river.

A friend told me about a outpost neer hwy 69 called La Casse. Anyone ever here of that place??

  6. What the hell!!

I signed on tonight to post questions about this same location. I'm going this weekend.

Is there a "French River Fishing Forum"?? :dunno:

I need to know what kind of live bait to bring, and what depth to target some eyes???? A good boat launch and safe parking would help too.

It looks like all the good PM's have been sent.

If there's any left over, send em my way Please :worthy:

  7. I have a 36lb Minni mounted to the stern of my 14' aluminum. It pushes it along pretty good. It would be nice to have some more juice though.

I got the motor for 1/2 price, then bought the biggest batery I could find. It runs for a long time without needing a charge. That about the only good thing about it!

I would definitly pass on the motor you've shown above. You'll just end up wanting to upgrade after a few times out on the water.

  8. Can't say I've ever used one but a friend purchased one to try. He used it on smallies and clobbered them. Unfortunately after a half dozen fish most of the paint was gone and the lure was full of water, he's a little dissapointed.

If 6 bass caused the paint to were off, what would 6 pike or musky do to the paint job?

You spend the extra money for a fancy paint job, but after a few fish (or even just bouncing around in the tackle box) they all end up looking the same.

They do look like nice lures though. Anyone else have any issues with the paint wearing off??
