  1. Best of luck bud,

Thats a very tough call to make but it sounds like you've made a call that will work for you.

I'm in that stage of life trying to balance my Recreational love for Fishing, a demanding career, and family Life(married with 3 young children.)

Its not easy, and the minute one is out of balance the others suffer...its a fine line

  2. Salt and Sugar cureing is just as much about the texture as it is the flavor...

Uncured fish tends to be a bit drier, and flakey as opposed to cured fish which is more dense, and firm. So as long as you don't mind that texture have at it.

Also just bare in mind salt content = more smoke flavor

The carbon in the Smoke tends to bonds to the Salt in the meat...which gives you more of the smoke flavor. So in esssence with out the salt you'll just have less smoke flavor permiate the meat.

However that being said the same level of smoke flavor can be acheived with a longer smoke time.

Just bare in mind you'll have to lower your temp or you risk overcooking the fish.

    Cheers,

  3. Chances are the dude was billegernt and pushed the issue, BUT....

Ya fined in a Paddle boat is rediculous.

The same thing happend to a guy in a Canoe back in July on Belwood lake....

Hardly a danger to the public though....sure he could "drift" into a lane way, but the same could be said for a kid on a floaty. Or an idiot who simply swims into the channel(seen this several times)

On the Positive side....Impaired operation of a vessle is NOT the same as DUI

If I understand correctly this guy will simply be charged, fined, and perhaps told he's not allowed to operate any "vessles" for a certain amount of time????

Which in its self is kind of silly,

Does he need a pleasure craft license to operate a Paddle boat or canoe....

Its really more of a slap on the wrist for someone being drunk and belligerent I think, but I could be wrong...and if I am I'm sure someone will tell me :whistling:

  4. Same way we did it long before the ages of Fish finders.

Use your eyes, and your head.

If it were me, and I have done this many times on back lakes where bringing in extra equipment is not an option...

    Best advice is:

Know your species habitts and habbitiat and look for it.

Trawling is a great way to cover water, so I do just that.

I then take note of area's that have what I'm looking for in the way of habbitat while trawling.

Then when you've identified a few areas along your trawl, swing back and cast them....if they don't produce move along and start over.

    cheers,

  5. Pay for our kids to go to Cuba...... while mom and dad drink umbrella drinks for a week.

That makes me want to get my kids into Baseball :w00t:

    Seriously...thats a bit much

I'm all for fundraiseing but I agee with the majority here that simple panhandling is a bit tacky...its not worth having a bad day over but I wouldn't give a cent to them.

On the other side of this debate,

I grew up in a family of five....yes FIVE boys and we all played hockey.

Single income...Dad was a plummer, mom was a stay at home housewife.

Christmas, and birthdays were tight but we made it work because it was important to us.

on a 3rd side...I also Coached hockey for 6 years,

We ALWAYS made the parents aware that when it came to travel or equipment needs there was a fund made available through the city league to help underprivilaged familys, and that I would personally set them up if they needed to apply for it. We always fundraised with the usual chocolate bars, and cookies to compensate for tourney costs....

only once did I ever have a parent need assistance, and they recieved it.

I imagine most city leagues have a similar releif fund...the coaches and parents just need to do a bit of research.

    My point being this...

    A trip to Cuba???

    Gimmee a break :dunno:

  6. A bear at your back door...repeatedly is not a good thing.

Not nessasarily an impending catatrophy either, but definatly cause for bit more caution.

North or not they should scare when encountered....if not....well I think the conversation of "Fwwwwt", "boom" or what have you is acceptable :whistling:

Funny but true...I've had encounters with bears in the wild far from the city, and they generally run when they pick up my scent.

But I've been in a situation near a garbage dumpster(semi urban setting) that was actually pretty intense...long story made short I stalked and chased.

Yet we have a hunt camp crawling with them....never seen anything in camp, though we run a clean camp.

I think urban/fringe bears/nuisance bears are ALOT different then the bears you encounter by chance in the woods. In an urban/fringe/homestead setting IMO Once that fear is gone, its time for the bear to go or your tempting fate....not that you yourself may be in imediate danger, but its a matter of time until your Garbage dumpster is smashed, or your BBQ, bird feeders, sheds.... or in a rough year you might just come home and find your pantry raided.

Thats not southern ontarian crazy either LOL!

I get that....I've talked to people who are completely paranoid, and out to lunch but IMO

There is a vast difference between a bear munching on your garbage and a wild bear out in the stix Just say'n :canadian:

  7. Are you by chance related to Chris Farley?

Nobody could fall, or walk into things like the Big man could

Number 2 is priceless....a Mole attack LOL!!!!

I've broken 2 bones getting outta bed if it makes you feel any better, but my story is no where near as entertaining :whistling:

(fell out of a Bunk at age 10...busted wrist, Fell while trying to get outta of a water bed while dizzy and sick with fever....busted my ankle)

  8. Even a Mad dog can be removed from the equasion...My uncle had a MASSIVE Gaurd dog named "bear" that he kept at his shop(he's a mechanic)

One morning he came in to work and all his tools were gone, and there in the middle of the garage laid his dead dog.....

The punks cut the power to the shop....say good bye to the alarm

They threw a steak laced with rat poison among other common chemicals into a broken window and got the dog ill, then they came back later and beat him to death.

The buggers then had the rest of the night to take their time stripping the shop of all his tools, 4 cars, his dirt bike, boat & Motor.....and if that wasn't bad enough, they "attempted" to burn the place down before they left but a neighbor saw flames and was able to douse the fire before calling the police.

Insurance....I recommend insurance for your boat

  9. The author was commenting on the irony of using "invisible" leaders on lures with 7/0 hooks dangling off of them :whistling:

    Ditto,

Wire leader, or Flouro depending on the conditions.

As far as hurting fish via them rolling in the line....I guess it happens, but I'm yet to have it happen to me.

    Maybe I'm lucky :dunno:

  10. I can't help you with anything Close to the Mouth...

But I can tell you that inland I've fished it up river closer to 86, and Wingham.

Pretty much anywhere you can find that has water deep enough to cast you'll find Bass and Pike.

Its pretty silty, and shallow, so finding deep holes it the trick.

Utelize Google earth to find some deeper looking holes close to where you'll be, and be prepared to do some Walking.

Hip waders, vest and a rod and lots of walking :)

I used white Spinner baits, and pumkin Tubes, or power Craw on a florida rig.

I'd cast logs, and undercut banks or deep water runs.

White seems to be the best color of spinnerbait, especially when the water is murky.

    Good luck,

  11. Imagine someone having morels and ethics because it is the right way to do things, and not because they fear punishment from their god.

Religion has absolutely NO PLACE in any public institution.

I don't think lack of, or sound catholic morals had anything to do with a misguided youth trying to torch a police cruiser.

If you want the lords prayer in class then go to a catholic school which is what I did, and where My Kids go.

My Taxes are directed to the Seperate board cause I think its important and its My choice, My money, My upbringing....end of story.

    Back to the topic,

I think this kid deserves to be crimanally charged to the full extent of the law as anyone else would be.

And he should pray....errr....hope like heck that the school has a soft spot.

I hope for his sake that he has a long track record of good grades, charitable/community service and some luck on his side to show this is an isolated incident...

If he does the school may overlook the criminal charges and allow him a shot.

But if he's hell on wheels outside of this occurance, he's in for some justice served cold.

  12. I've been free smoke free for 11 years this September :)

The trick for me was cold Turkey, and Anger LOL!!!

I know that sounds horrible, but Anger can be a great tool when pointed in the right Direction.

I was simply MAD at the addiction...

Every time I tried to quit and I gave in...I got mad.

Mad at myself, and mad at the dam cigarettes.

The spin that finally worked was when I looked at myself in the mirror and told myself.

" I guess you are not stong enough to beat this..."

And it was at this moment I became pretty much ENRAGED that I couldn't beat it...

I do things my way, and NOBODY tells me what to do so why was I letting a cigarette do that?

I dropped my pack in the garbage, and never looked back.

Everytime I felt the urge...I got mad, and I don't get mad I get even!!!

I got even by beating it, and by saving my hard earned cash.

I have said it before to many, and I'll say it again...if you truely want to quit you will.

I found cold turkey the best because it wasn't comfortable.

I had to work at it, and feel the pain so to speak....the suffering inspired me and pushed me along.

And earning it made it SOOOO mush easier to stay away.

After 3 months of Physicall sickenss, 6 months of frayed nerves, 12 months of cravings, and 2 years of working off the added pounds...there was NO WAY I was going to do that all over again LOL!!!

Just think about it like a Back lake adventure....you know your going to have to hump it up hill, through bogs, around rocks, and through thick bush with all 60lbs of gear, and your canoe. You muscles are gonna burn, your gonna be scraped, sweaty, dirty, and eaten alive by the bugs....but when you get there you know the payback its gonna be a gorgeous photo of you and your new PB Brookie.

Good Luck & Hang in there Simon, its a tough go...but a tough guy like you should be able to make it. :thumbsup_anim:
