  1. Thanks for the input guys. But this seems to be the problem...if I install the antenna on the bow it maybe in the way when I fold it down - will probbaly end up been in the middle of the boat not supported and could brake during transportation.

If I put it in the back of the boat it'll interfere with casting in the rare cases I cast from the back of the boat. It'll also be in the way of the mast cables when turning the boat.

If I put it next to the windshield on the driver side it'll be too close to me...

Doesn't look like I can win this one <_<:wallbash:

  2. Looking for suggestions on where would be best place to mount my new VHF radio and 8' antenna.

My new Cobra radio came with 8' Shakespeare antenna and ratchet mount.

Are you mounting the radio on the dash or under it?

I've been reading over last few days about the antenna have to be more then 3 meters away from people, etc. Not sure if this is possible on a 17'2" boat...if anyone have pictures of their VHF radio/antenna mounted on the boat I'd appreciate posting it.

    Thanks,

  3. Keep them coming! Thanks for all the input. So far I like the sounds of Honda 4-strokes are good, Legend is no good, and maybe buying from the States. What is it like to buy from the States? Is there a lot of paperwork? Are there brokers that will do it for a small fee?

I am doing it right now.

Just got the form from RIV today. Piece of Cake.

Will probably take the trailer to CT tomorrow.

There are brockers but they'll charge you lot of money and for what?

You can do it all yourself...10 min at the border...and that is it.

  4. have you considered putting bunks on your trailer instead of rollers? I've had both and prefer bunks, I find it easier to load on bunks when I am by myself and offloading is easier.

Infact I've consider replacing the rollers with bunks but will probably try them few times just to get an idea how I feel about them and be able to compare with the bunks I am used to.

What will I be looking for as cost to replace rollers with bunks?

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman

  5. This is also something to keep in mind when launching your boat from a roller trailer.

On a bunk trailer, you can unhook the strap and safety chain then back it straight into the water till it floats free of the trailer, but if your boat it sitting on rollers, you need to keep it firmly attached to the trailer until it's pretty well in the water.

If you unhook it at the top of the ramp, specially a steep one, there's every possibility it'll slide off the trailer and land on the concrete as your getting back into your truck.

You were probably already aware of this, but I've seen it happen before to those who used a roller trailer for the 1st time when they were used to a bunk.

Good point Lew. This is exactly my case scenario.

I've had bunk trailer before so the roller is all news to me...you've made good point I should keep in mind.

I used to unhook it completely and just keep a long rope attached to the handle so boat doesn't go to far while getting out of the truck.

Right when I learn my last trailer tricks ...I sold it...now have to learn it all over again with the rollers. :wallbash:

  6. I've seen some people "drive" the boat on to the trailer...have never done so with my old boat...is there any secret routine about doing so....?

Will this be an option with the Lund and the roller trailer...maybe the first time I'll need some one watching me not to drive it into the fenders....

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman

  7. Emil, try launching and loading before you make any changes. With your roller trailer you may find that you don't need them.

    -Brian

    Brian,

hope you are right as I am afraid I may hit the boat into the trailer fenders....how about a written invitation to come with me for the first test run on lake O. as early as weather permits and early enough so I can install them if I decide I need them?

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman

  8. Is installing pair of side boat guides on my roller trailer a good idea?

Any suggestions on available brand names, lengths, prices, etc?

Should I go for the bunk horizontal style or the vertical roller guide-ons style?

Where can I get a pair of good ones?

These will be installed on Spartan roller trailer with 17' Lund on it.

  9. Just incase your not aware of it, the screws you remove to drain the lower unit oil have washers on them that should be replaced every year too.

Only a few ¢ each but something many folks fail to change.

Well I was charged at Yamaha dealer in Oakville $1,24 each for those washers...I am sure they don't cost the dealer more then 2c. Same dealer charged me $13 for a small bottle of lower unit oil :wallbash: I have full bottle of gear oil from my old Johnson motor but dealer told me it is not good for the Yamaha kicker.

Can I use syntetic oil 10/30? I happen to have 4-5 bottles and would like to use them if I can.

Motor is not connected to a fuel line right now so can I just drain what ever gas is left in carburator and fog it whithout having to run it/connect it to fuel line with stabilizer in the fuel?

Also...seems this Yamaha kicker has an oil filter...but one that you only take out, clean up and put back in....does that make sence to you guys?

    Thanks.

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman

  10. It might have an oil filter although I almost doubt it on that size motor, usually most lower units use 75/80/90 hypoid oil, available at CTC. Most of the 4 strokes use a 10/30 oil. Yamaha doesn't make oil, just buys from someone else and sticks their name on it and raises the price. I personally use synthetics, but that again is everyones own choice. Don't forget to drain the carburater, there is usually a small screw on the lower edge of the bowl with a piece of fuel hose attached to let it drain into a cup. Quick hint, refill the lower unit from the bottom screw, when it comes out the top screw, replace it, then replace the lower screw.

OK I have some lower unit oil left from my old 60HP Johnson 2 stroke motor. It should work for the 4 stroke kicker right?

I know the trick with the bottom/top screw as I've struggled with this before on my Johnson :wallbash:

So as long as CT oil has 4 stroke sign on it and is 10/30 it'll work for me?

Sounds easier then I thought :clapping:

  11. Could someone advice on how to winterize my 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 high thrust kicker?

Have no idea what to do but would love to do fairly major service to make sure everything is done right as I am not sure what the previous owned have/have not done to it. All I know is it was not winterized. I'd like to do it ASAP so then I have the time for mounting, securing, installing steering arm and remote throttle control etc. during the winter.

Can I do it myself or should I take to Yamaha service place and is there a good (not super expensive) one in West GTA (Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Brampton)?

    Thanks,

  13. Doug,

you are much closer to the target this time my friend ;-)

And your quoted text is in the same spot (the target) as well.

As soon as I do all the CT certification formalities, licensing, plates, swing tongue....I'll take the boat to the 401 in Milton and ask those truck weight station to tell me what is the total trailer/boat/motors weight...then I'll do the bathroom scale test and hope I am within limits...it does feel much heavier on the tongue then the old boat but it is also much easier to pull with the Pathfinder...so I am a bit confused on this one....maybe the trailer/wheels/bearings are nicer/better hence the easier tow...?!!?

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman

  14. Thanks for your kind words guys.

Doug, been able to cary more camping gear is one of my main tasks with this boat.

But you are off target on the other present Bud. It is MUCH BIGGER then a truck ha ha....be patient you'll find out shortly after the New year arrives. :canadian:

    Suzuki is two stroke.

No trailer brakes and it is about 23 feet as is now. I've already measured it (after removing my garage stair case) and with cutting the tongue and installing the swing tongue I have, it will fit perfect and allow me to close the door, so no more raccoons ha ha ha. It dives very easily though, much easier then my old 16' fiberglass. But when lifting the tongue it feels heavier then the old boat. And it stops well behind the Pathfinder. It is quite unusula ride though as it is wider/taller/longer then the Pathfinder and when on the Hwy often the trailer wheels cross the line while the Pathfinder is OK...so I have to get used to it before touching the car next to me ;-))

    Cheers,

    Ice Fisherman
