  1. Huh. Weird to see the name of a road I've fished down on here. Too bad I am a few days late. It was definitely open a few weeks ago, before any snow melted. Even the roads that intersect it were plowed. Lots of trout waters up that way, though I've only fished a couple of them so far. ;) ;)

    Are you from the area? My dad is from KL. Worked on Watabeag for the ministry for years. Says he probably planted half of the trees we saw on the way through :).

  2. The one up by Kirkland? Not sure there's any members living up that way. Plenty of good easy access trout fishing close to north bay available right now. Olrig (forest access) is plowed right to the power lines so all those splake lakes are an easy walk this year.

    PS where is this? I'll try it out. Can't find it on fish on-line or google.

  3. Excellent advice Akrisoner. This site needs a "thank you" or "this was helpful" button. In any case...

    Everything on that page you linked looks deadly. The stacker rigs included. Seems like they would do ok through the ice as well (cleaner presentation than conventional pickerel/perch rig). Going to see if I can locate these in Canada.

    Edit: OK I can't find these anywhere in Canada. Someone needs to supply me a source before I cave and buy in USD.

  4.

    Is that a 'white bucket' list? :D

    On another note. Was there any explanation about how they were accidently stocked into a lake? I am involved in stocking myself. That seems like a pretty big mistake. It would be interesting to hear how that happened. E.g. did they take the wrong fish out of the hatchery when they were supposed to be stocking regular brookies; or, perhaps a driver got his directions mixed up and stocked a different lake.

    Regardless, it worked out well for you.

    I was thinking this too. Another theory would be two lakes with similar or identical names, or wrong coordinates, or something along those lines. Your first theory seems most plausible though, since Aurora Trout could easily pass as Brookies to the untrained eye.

    I remember a number of years ago fishing a lake in the McConnell area with my brother and pulling out walleye that were oversized for the lake we were on. We took our limit home and got stopped by the MNR, who asked us where we caught the fish. They didn't believe us, since the lake we came from was supposedly a trout lake only. They'd been stocking that lake with trout for years and the walleye were just gorging themselves all that time!

  5. On the 2nd catch I was losing it over here going "HE HAS A FISH ON THE LINE BEHIND HIM!!!!" then I kept watching :).

    PS I noticed you're not really setting your hooks. My philosophy has always been to set the hook really hard but this of course depends on the type of fish.

  6. I have never fished nip....one of these days. Great going.

    Remember that Nip is a huge lake with some areas heavily overfished, you need to know what you're doing in order to be successful.

    If you're with Chad no doubt you'll do well.

    If you're with me I hope you enjoy beer and a good conversation!

  7. I have to ask...does anyone else see the merit in having a forum under the Main Section that is actually for fishing?? Maybe it's just me but scrolling through the threads to looking for something interesting and remotely related to fishing is getting harder and harder. I mean no disrespect when I say, I don't care what your political views are, or if your dog likes to chase seagulls... I log on for the fishing. There's obviously a place for this stuff or it wouldn't be so repetitive, but maybe the powers at be could separate it?

    I was actually just about to make a thread about this. Most forums have a section for politics or even a no-politics rule.

    We learned a long time ago it does not benefit the board to chop it up into little compartments. We have separated it to an extent for the specialty things but past that we have asked people to just put NF Not Fishing at the header.On a brighter note we will be past winternet early this year and the fishing stories will flow again.

    What I do with my forums is require that users input a thread category before being able to post. That way content can be sorted easily when browsing.

    When I first joined I was obsessed with the awesome fishing reports people were posting, only problem is that I couldn't find them. A tagging system would make this trivial.

    From what I've seen so far the NF tags are not working, at a glance there are 14 NF thread on the first page, 2 of which are tagged as such.

  8. Is this a hypatitical (sp?)question?

    I sure hope so. A three week old? REALLY

    Somewhat hypothetical, I have a large shack near shore, heated and comfy. The boys are going fishing, and if mommy wants to come, the baby comes too (not my kid btw).

    I don't believe there is a residents requirement on that...just gotta be under 18 and you can fish.

    And they don't have to be with a licensed adult.

    Is far as 3 weeks, you gotta be able to fish, not just gurgle

    Here are the excerpts from regulations;

    "A person is deemed to be the holder of a Recreational Fishing Licence if they are Residents of Ontario and Canada under 18 years old, or 65 years of age or older and in possession of any identification card issued by the Government of Canada..."

    So yes you must be a resident. Non-residents must purchase a licence;

    "Most non-Canadian residents require an Ontario fishing licence to fish in Ontario."

    clearly someone hopes it is a way to circumvent the law

    the law does say that you can put the line in the water and set the hook and reel it in for another person if that person is handicapped otherwise, you can not

    is a 3 week old handicapped , no it is a normal 3 week old that has normal limitations

    so if the CO wants to he can charge this person and take away all the equipment

    and personally , I would hope they would

    This I have heard, but cannot find in the regulations - hence this thread.

    Not sure where you are going but with current ice reports I'd rather not hear your taking any children out on the ice....can't imagine risking a kids life so you can keep a few extra fish :dunno:

    16 inches everywhere here. I drilled holes all the way to my spot from shore to check thickness and consistency. Not concerned at all about the ice.

    And I won't be keeping an extra fish. Haven't caught a keeper this year. Welcome to lake Nipissing. Not to mention I catch and release 90% of the time.

  9. Question for you guys...

    If you take a person under 18 fishing in Ontario, they don't require a license provided they're with someone holding a sports fishing license, and any fish they catch goes under your limit.

    I'm taking a 3 year old and 3 week old ice fishing soon.

    Do I get a couple extra lines for the 3 week old? Honest question. People are telling me "the angler must be able to participate". I can't find this anywhere in the regs. The regs only state that you don't need a license under 18 years of age. Period. And even so, define participate?

  10. Spoke to a CO on Nipissing last year about this and it's quite simple;

    If the ROD is tensioned and the device releases the tension in the rod, you're ok.

    If any other device acts to set the hook, you're breaking the law!

    In other words the device in the video is fine.

  11. This is actually a really interesting question. I'll pass it onto a connection of mine that may have some input.

    Lake biology is complex and we may not fully understand all the moving parts, but I enjoy discussing the parts we understand.

    My chain of reasoning would be more fish in the spring because of less ice fishing during the winter and more oxygen getting to the water with the lack of ice covering. Just wondering if this is actually true.

    Food for thought, some lakes are protected by ice and slush on opening day, so hungry fish aren't hit as early, which reduced angling pressure.
