  1. Ha...you must work for the MNR.

I agree, there are a few competent people within the MNR, but they are nothing more than puppets.

Father in law works for the MNR. I can't comment on the public heads we see in the papers, but the guys behind the scenes are fishery encyclopedias.

As for me, I work in the mining industry, where we work to destroy the environment and ensure there is nothing left for future generations.

  2. I'm not sure if the new slot size of greater than18" is the way to go. I would have thought that the previous slot of less that 15 3/4" was more geared to protecting the present time mature spawning females?

I would be curious to get a quick read of these studies.

Maybe closing the lake for a few winter seasons would be better? But, of course, that wouldn't interfere with other activities on the lake.........

There is a complex science behind fisheries that few people understand. We can pretend that we understand spawning and fish populations, but at the end of the day the MNR has competent people behind these decisions. Yeah, they make stupid decisions once in a while, but they're also being critiqued for everything they do, all day every day.

  3. So yesterday I opened up my MC statement and realized the money owed was a lot more then I thought. As a looked down at the transactions I noticed five that I didn't recognize. Four were from ruletap.com and one was from allotect.com. Have no idea who either of them are from. Never had this happen to me, but I knew what to do and kind of panicked. It totaled almost four hundred dollars. I called MC and told them my problem and they said they are going to deal with it. Hopefully I can get this all straightened out. Going to call them again to see if anything was fixed. Oh and to make things worst when I called MC I couldn't even understand what the lady was talking about cause her accent was pretty strong and I think she was on speed lol.

    Whatever you do, don't say yes to any of these trick questions;

    • Is your pin easy to remember?
    • Have you written down your pin or CC number anywhere?
    • Have you shared your CC with a significant other?

Answer yes to any of these questions and they will deny you the refund.

  4. Not sure if you've done this, but register at anglersatlas.com, they have a lot of free maps of lakes with depth charts and everything. Might help you avoid the 10ft lake trout spots...

Otherwise, checking yourself is sometimes the only way to know what's in there.

My brother and I fished Dymond Lake for years and brought home monster walleye almost every outing. Strange because this is a small lake.

The MNR stopped us one day, and asked where we'd caught the fish. They accused us of lying when we told them the walleye had come out of Dymond.

"There's no walleye in Dymond", they said. "We've been stocking that lake with specks for years".

We eventually managed to convince them they were wrong.

Moral of the story, no source can be considered 100% correct unless you go there yourself and fish the lake.

  5. Nipfisher: any idea whereabouts they're fishing? I figure it can't be rocket surgery - find a deepish spot and put riggers at 25-40ft?

Rod Caster: I read through the report. Very interesting. The population was introduced in the early 1900s, decimated in 1967, and once again introduced in the late 80s. The population was struggling in the early 90s but I presume it's healthier now.

Atlantic Salmon were in lake Ontario but we managed to extirpate them from even that lake. From what I read only Trout Lake has a self-sustained population of landlocked salmon in Ontario. Neat stuff.

  6. It holds lots of lake trout and atlantic salmon. If you know how to fish for trout you'll find fish! I'll be out there once or twice next week trolling around. The thermocline will not be deep, but the fish may be, since the primary forage (smelt) are typically deep water bait fish.

I'm pretty new to downrigging but I figure gang trolls and a threaded minnow?

  7. Anybody here have experience fishing for Trout in Trout Lake, North Bay?

It's open for 1 week starting Saturday. I can't imagine the trout population is pressured much... so the fishing must be good while it's allowed.

I'll probably find a deep spot and fish the thermocline, otherwise I'm at a loss.

    Any tips?
