  1. I would recommend a Canon. I have an early version and I still love it.

At $600 your options are very limited. I'd wait for the holiday deals: Black Friday / Boxing Day and see if you can snag a deal then.

If you can swing a few hundred more, there are a few packages in the $800 range that have 2 or more lenses and accessories that look good. Remember, you'll likely have this camera a long time. Spend more now and be happier longer. The T5i is a premium entry in the hobbyist class that covers most of the bases and still allow you to build your package down the road. Having a zoom lens is really nice obviously when shooting nature and sports. A 50 mm is really nice when doing portraits and close range animals/nature. They all come with a multi-purpose 18-55 mm lens, unless you buy a body only of course. And don't skimp out on the memory card. You want a good one when buying it for a camera. As fast as you can get with decent size.

I'd recommend you shop around a few camera stores, such as Henry's or similar and get a feel for what 's out there. Their staff are typically very knowledgeable about their product and love to talk to people just starting out. You're like a blank canvas for them. LOL

It's amazing how uninformed the big box stores can be when it comes to their product. Especially more complicated equipment. If I ask a question and they pick up the box, it's all over. I bought mine at a camera store and I got great service and you can go back and ask questions later if you need to.

Lastly, most cities have community programs that offer courses in a wide range of hobbies. I live in London, ON and I was able to take an SLR photography course through the city for around a $100 that covered all the basics of SLR photography that helped a lot early on. I think it was 8 weeks and it was well worth while.

Good Luck. If you have more questions as you work through it, come back and ask.

  2. I have to agree that while "teaching the other dog a lesson" might feel like the right thing to do, and may have been appropriate at one point in time, in today's litigious society, it could be the good guy who ends up with vet bills.

I think you have the right idea with animal control. You might inform her of your intention to report her (mentioning the information the AC officer requested) and see if that's not enough to change her behavior.

  3. Yup the driver's door window frame was pulled/bent out and they were likely able to reach in and hit the power lock switch. We never keep anything of value in our vehicles but the Envoy was ransacked with maybe a few CDs missing and a couple bucks worth of change.

This is one of the things that drives me crazy the most. Thugs cause thousands of dollars in damage (at least a $500 deductable for DanD) all to steal $10. Makes you want to just sit out in a lawn chair and hand out $10 bills to all the scumbags who wander by. Probably a lot cheaper.

It reminds me of an article I read in the newspaper several years ago about a thief who stole some coper or brass fittings from some equipment on a property containing hazardous materials. The alloys were worth maybe a hundred bucks but the clean up cost the property owner over half a million and not covered by insurance. How crazy is that?

  4. That sucks big time !!!

I'll tell you what though, after reading all these stories about theft from boats and such, when getting ready for holidays this summer I left the boat in my garage over night, and hooked it all up in the morning. I just couldn't take the risk of leaving it in the driveway even with the cover cinched down tight. I have my eye out for a light and a camera that feeds to my PC which is almost always on.

  5. I like the key taped under the console idea. Something interesting I noticed while on holiday this year. Most people left their keys in the ignition while their boats were at the dock including overnight. The cottage resort was a group of 11 cottages but on a moderately busy lake. I always brought mine in. It felt weird not to. I wouldn't leave them in my car. The cottage owner leaves the keys in his boats that have keys as well.

  6. So my Dad returned from a 4000 km road trip out East last week and he is having trouble cleaning the front of his car of the bug shrapnel. He's tried ordinary car soap, pressure washer, WD40 and there's still quite a bit of debris left.

Is there a good commercial product or another home made remedy that you've tried that works on stubborn bug residue?

  7. Why is it every time I use the shift key I get an e with the French highlight show up like this one ÉÉÉ. Itès something to do with the blue items on the keysÉÉÉ. Oh man.

You must have hit the Shift key and the CTRL key at the same time to activate the second set of special keys. Simply push the SHIFT Key and the CTRL key again and it will go back to normal. Sometimes it takes a second try. I find it works better using the keys on the left sie of the board. Not kidding. You must push them together, not one and then the other. Or just reboot. LOL

  8. Lying on you back, straighten out your cramping leg, and flex your ankle and point your toes back towards your head as much as you can. Hold position until the cramping subsides.

This is what I do. It usually takes several minutes before it goes away, but at least with my leg extended comletely it's not so painful.

Also, the banana advice is solid. I ate a couple after my first charley horse a few days into my vacation a few weeks ago and it never came back. I'd try Gatorade if you don't like bananas.

It's funny how you posted that you only get them after fishing, (vacation). It is the same for me.

  9. Wow. That fuel economy is pretty impressive.

On my recent trip from London to near Sturgeon Falls I would say I averaged approximately 14.5 - 15 L/100 km. I was towing a Tracker Proguide V16 WT which I would estimate the weight including the crap I added to be approx 2300 - 2400 lbs. I towed it with a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0 litre TURBO. I thought that was a little high, but I have nothing to go on for previous experience. The car gets about 8 L/100 km when not towing. It's all those bloody hills that kill my mileage.

    Thanks for posting your experience.
