  1. Just wondered if this this ruins the fish...would think that when thawing them out again, would cause the guts to contaminate the fish before they are fully thawed out enough to proceed with cleaning them.

Got some fish from a friend and was going to cook them up but wife was worried that it may not be safe. Not being sure myself I came on here to find out. The fish has been frozen for a week or so...well wrapped.

  2. Oastler PP was one of the parks we tried a few years ago and we didn't care for it. Far too crowded and noisy. I didn't get out on the lake to fish it, since I had forgotten my fuel line, so can't really comment on the fishing. The best thing we liked about the park was the park store, it was a old fashioned cabin type, that is actually located off the park property. It was what a camp store should be like...carrying stuff you need or have run out of etc. Not like what alot of the PP stores are becoming (ice cream and popsicles etc)

  3. My buddy Bill and I headed up to Kasshabog Lake last weekend for a few days of fishing. When we finally got to the lake, it was almost dark and after two trips to get our gear up to the campsite and getting everything organized we got to sleep so could be up nice and early Sat morning.

Grabbing a quick breakfast of instant oatmeat, we located close to where some mid lake rock which was in about 6 FOW and dropped off down to about 18 FOW....scored a lot of dink smallies until I got this 4.25 pound fella, dead sticking a texas rigged stickbait.

The cold front that had moved in didn't help out the fishing all that much, but we had all kinds of dink smallies providing entertainment on and off throughout. We managed several in the 2 pound range tho, here are two that managed to make it on camera:

Monday morning, before we packed up and headed back home, we hit the water for one last shot and with only minutes left before we packed her in, Bill comes through with the biggest of the trip, a 4.75 pounder on a black Power Slug:

Despite the cold front and wet weather, I could see tons of spots and great structure that we never had time to explore. Defintiely plan on heading back for another go around. We camped in an out of the way spot that was removed from the busy area where the sea-doos and big boats zipped around, so it was great to be able to concentrate on fishing without the huge waves rocking you every 5 minutes :wallbash:

    Thanks for looking!

  4. Nice fish! Glad things worked out with your dog, we have an 8 year old canine that always seems to meet up with the local skunks when he comes camping with us! :w00t:

The wife and I were thinking of a trip to this lake but was wondering if that access road by Ompah is passable with a mini van or not?

  5. It was a good time at Bass Lake PP, was a little disappointed that they no longer hold their Family Fishing Derby anymore tho. For the last 15 years the PP has held a fun little derby on the first Saturday of the Family Fishing Week. Over the years we have brought the kids to take part in it and it created some great memories. Only in the last few years have we had a boat to get out on the water, which certainly helped, since fishing from the docks at the park is pretty tough.

My son won the 'youngest participant' prize in the second annual derby in 1994. (little guy on the end with rod and trophy)

As far as we could tell, the only place where we could get fish to bite was on the far side of the lake from the park and then only if we used white tube jigs...lol. I tried almost every other item in my tackle box, just to see and even my trusty wacky worm failed to entice any bites. The west end of the lake is quite shallow but when we got up there, we could find no cover or structure at all for the bass to hide in. We had some luck over a few deep weed clumps heading back to the north shoreline where the water depth drops off quite sharply. We swam our tube jigs over top of the submerged weeds along this north side. We manged to catch 2 fish most times we went out, but it wasn't fast action by any means. Nevertheless, it was a good time and from what we heard from others, we faired out alot better than most in our time there.

I talked to park staff and mentioned that if it were at all possible it would be in the park's interest to see about a stocking program for the lake or at the very least really encourage anglers in the park to catch and release.

The shaded area is where we had most of our action:

Bass Lake is a nice enough PP and is sure worth a visit. It is a few minutes from stores for supplies. Fishing is ok, but having a boat is a must. You can rent a motor boat at the park but the cost is nutty...especially if you don't know where to go and waste valuable rental time searching around. (Anyone who wants a copy of my contour map of the lake can send me a PM and I'll send you one)

BTW: Congrats to Mike The Bass Fisher! He finally broke the boat jinx he had last year....and finally caught some, fishing from a boat....lol.

  6. Interesting thread...I just picked up a 14' Aluminum project boat. Older, cruiser style with full windshield and two bench seats, and older 30 hp 'Rude.

Plan on gutting it out and cutting back the front bow covering, install casting deck, etc...basically put some of the features of modern fishing boats into it. Since it has the steering wheel, was planning on going with a side console (will have to figure out how to route the cabling all one one side somehow...but cross that bridge later :)...the rear was gonna be place for gas can and maybe livewell too.

Being a smaller boat...this thread has me thinking about the tiller option now (lots of work before I am really ready to tackle the console part, but just thinking ahead), for it would give more room.

My boat will be 75% fishing and 25% family stuff (tubing, swimming off it etc)

Good reasons for both ways.... B)

  7. I also am looking for a GPS unit and this Lowrance H20c looks prettty good, but the fact that these units come preloaded with maps for continental US is such a pain!

You would think that if they wish to sell their units north of the border, they would include the information and maps that is relevant to that area. If you are an American fisherman, who is only fishing in his country the basic unit is ready to go, but if you are Canadian fisherman, you must pay that price PLUS almost the same amount again for the map package!

Now that my little rant is over, I will prolly still be getting the unit...just be sooo much nicer if it only cost $275 instead of the better part of $500 :wallbash:

  8. I wish I had some Roy, but unfortunately due to past medical issues and bad times my family and I lost our house and now live in a small apt. building and don't have insurance on home belongings.I don't believe or have alot of faith in the police being able to do anything as I know they're busy with alot of things on the go but figured I'd put in a report anyway.Hopin against hope!!

Talk to an insurance agent...I'm pretty sure you can have content insurance etc for living in apartments.

    Sorry about the loss

  9. For me it was worth the effort. This is 14' and went from this

    To this

    med_gallery_186_32_2579.jpg

for sure, if its an open boat like yours its a good idea...was thinking more about those older style ones, some of which are aluminum.

Was just wondering if others out there had redone one of them older style boats into a more modern vessel.

  10. In my snooping around, trying to locate a trailer for my 12 foot aluminum that reasonably priced, I see several boat and trailer combos for $500 or so...the boats are those old 50's style with the windshield etc. Just wondered if it would be worth the effort to redo one of those into a proper fishing boat (take out that front "hood" section and install a casting deck etc...

Prolly be quite a bit of work, has anybody bothered to try something like that?

Hmmm, just occurred to me...if I get a trailer for boat, since I already have a small 12 foot camp trailer, I wouldn't be able to take both...now there is a dilemma!!!

  11. The seats the easy part. LeBaron has a few diff. seat mounts as well for less then CTC.

is it the power or the searing for the bow mount you are wondering about? I read someone post about using jumper cables as a cable extension. Clip off the ends and wire them together to make it longer... I'm sure if you search for 'jumper cables' here you will find the post. If it's the stearing, hope you have a long reach and a longer stick attached to the handle if you are not going wireless... :D

The Powerdrive V2 that I was looking at on LaBaron's comes with a 18' cord on its foot pedal, so in a 12 foot boat that should work until can afford that nifty little remote that clips on your belt...:)

  12. Setting the reel up with a 6 1/2 foot medium rod be best? I read somewheres about matching up lure weights that you will be using, but honestly...I don't know what alot of the lure weights are for my soft plastics and jerkbaits etc.

Turns out that I found a review of the reel, but not when I typed in the model name of the reel...got nothing but eBay ads for that, when I type in Mag Force-boom-find a review...lol.

    Procaster Review

Now just too bad that my other baitcaster has seemingly grown legs, can't find it anywheres, it was a Abu Garcia low profile Ambassedeur, was looking forward to having two baitcasters with different set ups on each...so hopefully I am just not looking closely enough :wallbash: (should just get the wife to look...seems most times she will come along and find in a minute flat, what I have searched for for 20 minutes....:))

  13. Just picked this reel up from a buddy, who decided he didn't want to use baitcasters. I have googled the model hoping to find some specs for it, but not much luck. Diawa is a good name, so I'm sure its a good reel, just wondering what the line rating is for it, the retrieve speed etc. Reel is about two years old, so hoping somebody may also have one and know some info about it.

  14. From what info i can read about them, they are both made with a co polymer frame etc, so I would think that the points where the seat anchors into the swivel or base unit must still be basically the same...just as you say...more padding and comfy. I imagine as long as you don't lean your whole body weight back against the rear of the seat...(trying to break them)...they should be fine. Just wondering if anybody out there has had many problems with those type of seats breaking off etc.

  15. Was looking at some Minn Kota trolling motors and the PowerDrive V2 with the 48" shaft looked pretty good, since wanted the remote control to operate it from the back. Turns out that with an adapter plug, I can use my little Humminbird Piranha 20 with it as well. I actually have two of these sonar units, would there be any benefit from having both units operating from a 12 foot boat? or would they interfere with each other too much?

I know I would like to definitely like having the sonar at the bow, for it would make following weedlines alot easier...

  16. Was thinking of getting a couple of these seats for my 12 footer. Buddy at work was saying that he did not like them for they broke at the four anchor points of the base...that I'd be better off getting the ones with the thicker padding, at more rugged type of seat.

    boat seat

Does anybody have these seats and are they that bad, or maybe he was just too rough or something with them?

  17. No mention of the good ole barbut, we used to get together on nights back home and throw out worms or pcs of weiner etc, then bring a mess of them back for a good old feast. Only knew them by the name of barbut back home, but I think they really are black bullshead (mini catfish..lol).

Only ate rockies once back in high school when on an ice fishing trip...but recall them being pretty tasty...just roasted them in tin foil on the open fire.
