I wouldn't touch a Tranx 400 with a 10ft pole after reading some of the horror stories.
Which horror stories have you read? they seem to get glowing reviews from what I have seen and mine has been flawless.
the only thing I recall seeing was when they first came out they had some where the drag would loosen on its own for some reason, but I believe this was fixed by Shimano.

so, I use a St. Croix Premier MH 8 foot muskie rod, its also rated from 3/4 to 3 oz.
I use a tranx 400A reel on it.
if you are serious about muskie and big pike the tranx reels are worth the investment. They are strong, smooth and easy to cast. worth every penny.
Ironically, the only muskie I have ever caught was NOT using my muskie rig, it was caught on my MH bass baitcasting rod, casting a #5 Mepps Black Fury.
go figure lol

"suspended from fishing for one year" - what a joke.
should be 10 years.

the only way I could see someone surviving that is if they were in a basement etc. down below. because everything from ground level up just got obliterated.

Our tax dollars at work...
Keep bugging them. they must have a record of your numbers somewhere.
I've had mine since 2003 the first year they issued them. I have had to show it when renting small boats a few times but thats it.

Hi, so we are renting a cottage this summer in Sauble Beach and the Saugeen River mouth only like a 12 minute drive from where we are. I know there is lots of shore access there. It's a mixed bag there right? Bass to perch to muskie?? I have a bass baitcasting rig, a light spinning rig and a muskie rig. Do I bring it all?? Thanks for any advice you can give

The rules don't need changing, and it has nothing to do with this particular scenario,
Ok but this is what I am saying. you can't have it both ways.
Either the rule needs changing to allow for pics like this to be legally taken
or
The rule should not be changed, and this pic should not have been taken in the first place.
You can't say "rule needs to remain but this is ok as an exception" because then everyone makes an exception etc.
that's all I'm saying.
change this dumb rule so you can take a pic of your proud grandchild with his first muskie legally.
full stop.

The sad part though, is this little guy was probably really excited about catching his biggest fish and seeing it posted on the internet, but I'm sure those feeling are long gone now. Probably put a real damper on the whole experience.
like I said, the law should be changed. I know people are disagreeing with me on that but this case is a perfect example where an a quick photo should be allowed as long as you aren't messing around with it for 5 min out of the water etc.

Congrats on the fish. I have a grandson that age and he would have the same ear to ear smile !
Just a friendly heads up...you may want to share that photo with just friends and family. Posting a photo of an out of season fish on a public forum is probably not a good idea.

absolutely amazing!!
but this is one of those examples where this 'rule' needs to be changed.
who wants to be the person to tell that proud young man that we can't take a pic of him with his fish out of the water because its actually an OOS fish?
not me.
the people who make these rules don't even fish and its rules like this that get put in there because of it.
I would absolutely take a pic just as was done.
congrats on the first muskie young man!

the Regs in Ontario always drive me crazy they are so needlessly complicated.

yeah I think Loomis has improved a lot on the build quality issues, they have received a lot of criticism over thread wrapping gaps etc.
When the NRX's first came out it was a disaster lol As you said, fish don't care but for $900 the customer sure as hell does lol
That being said, the build quality of both of my imx pro rods is perfect:
so I think a lot of the previous issues are gone hopefully for good.

So last year I bought my dream rod, the Loomis IMX Pro MBR 903C, 7'6 MH fast action, 1/4 to 3/4 oz lures
its incredible.
the MH power with the 7'6 length is amazing, its a rocket launcher caster and very sensitive. I use it for everything, and have caught everything from perch to muskie on it.
I have mine paired with a Curado 200i with 12 pound test Sufix Siege.
Highly recommended rod. It was pricey for sure, but worth every penny. Everything about it screams high end.

Nice fish... I suppose because it isn't a monster fish it would be more likely to hit a smaller lure? Not sure how it works...
Ya I was thinking that too. The river where I caught him apparently does have 50 inchers in it but this fish definitely wasn't it lol
-
my story from what I understand is not unusual - I cast Big Rapala jointed shads, Buchertail 500 and 700s and Mepps Giant Killer lures from 10am to about 3pm
took a break, picked up my Loomis IMX Pro bass rod, cast the smaller #5 Mepps Black Fury and WHAM
sometimes downsizing can help entice a bite. They weren't interested in the bigger stuff that day.

Assuming since your fishing Gibson you are close to Niagara? For a shore angler any of the creek mouths along the Upper River can have fish cruising by and probably your best bet in that area. Also the Lower River has a small but overlooked population above the dams and all throughout the whirlpool/Glen area. I have never really targeted them there but have caught and seen quite a few incidentally over the years. Spend enough time smallie fishing there one will grab your bass,,or spoon chucking salmon and casting kwikfish for trout seems to hook ski's if ones around . You do see a few guys target them with giant tube jigs or inline bucktails in that area at times.
Thank you! I actually ended up catching one by driving up to the Kawarthas to a river up there! Smashed a Mepps #5 Black Fury on my bass rod (after using my muskie rig for hours - go figure lol)

I find the mepps spinners quality have decreased significantly from decades prior...
Glad it worked for you
in what way? I have been using them since the late 80s and they seem the same as they always have been?

So, I was fishing with my musky rod for hours today after driving 2 hours to a river in the Kawarthas to try to catch my first muskie (from shore, I don't own a boat). I took a break from using it, picked up my bass rod (7'6 MH) cast a #5 Mepps Black Fury and caught my first one lol Go Figure lolol The Mepps Black Fury lures are sooooo goood! Took a few pics as fast as I could with help from some nice people walking through the park and back it went. took off like a rocket

Excellent thread.
so I am a shore fisherman that has been trying to catch a muskie for about 2 years.
I fish Lake Gibson in Thorold (nothing but I know there are big muskie in it)
I have driven out to a well known shore spot on Lake St. Claire (about 2 hours from me) 3x and each time no one caught one lol
I am thinking about trying a shore spot in the Kawarthas for a better chance.
there is a spot near a boat launch in Balsam lake where people fish that is about the same driving distance as Lake St. Claire was.
Worth a shot? I have a muskie rig (St. Croix Premier, Tranx etc) big net etc.
Or am I better to try somewhere near Pigeon Lake?? it seems to be another muskie factory like Lake St. Claire is.
thanks!

Any idea why they stopped the stocking? was it budget cuts? Im assuming it was??
-
ok thanks! I'll try to get out there and give it a shot

Anyone know if the gate at Bronte Pier is open?
Used to fish there all the time but a locked gate showed up during the pandemic and I know I have been down there and the gate is locked.
Looking to cast for some browns oh yeah
thanks!
-
yes thats true. Not sure why they did that.
People have been fishing off of both piers since the 1960s.
Not sure why now it was such a big no no
-
awesome. I'm so glad that pier is open again for fishing. its been gated off and closed for the last 3 years.
Abu Revo Toro 60HS as a musky reel?

They are there. we stayed at Wild Woods cottages a few years ago right by the mouth of the river and there was lots of pike there. All hammer handle size though.
