I BELIEVE THE ISSUE RESTS WITH WHETHER OR NOT FROZEN OR LIVE SMELT ARE BEING USED FOR BAIT. REGULATIONS ON THE THE USE OF LIVE SMELT MAKE SENSE. THE USE OF FROZEN SMELT SHOULD RAISE NO SUCH ISSUES. FURTHERMORE, THE REGS POSTED ABOVE IN ANOTHER REPLY, DO NOT ADDRESS THE FROZEN ISSUE.

One of the best baits that my son and I use on the lower is a jigging spoon (silver - ctton cordells) We are extremely fortunate to catch a variety of species using a simple jigging technique in 15 to 30 feet of water.

Had the same problem with my boat - only more rivets along a bow stringer. Problem was initially solved at the marina where purchased. This included, luckily, only removing the bow casting platform and re-tapping the original rivets. To make sure the fix was perm anent I also applied a tubed compound called Sicoflex which can be purchased at most marinas in a variety of colors. Apparently, this product is used on the west coast for some pretty major damage. The boat has remained dry under all sorts of conditions. Having said this, remember it is an aluminum boat and a small amount of water in the bilge is of no real concern with an appropriate bilge pump. Enjoy the w ater and fishing!

There are a number of fine brand name downriggers - Scotty, Big Jon, Cannon, Walker etc If you planon fishing deep water - your new boat can easily handle the Great Lakes - I would suggest you consider the electric models. Scotty seems to be the big name on the water right now, but they seem bulky. Look into the Big jon captain packages - they have upgraded there motors to an equivalent Scotty high speed for a 10 lb ball.

I would go with the Lowrance - heard there have been problems servicing Garmins if so needed. Unit must be sent to Calif. resulting in delays and costs.

I have a 18.5 Lund Fisherman - use a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke kicker - fully rigged which does well under all conditions with the aforementioned kicker. A very reliable, easily maintained kicker. Relatively inexpensive to service - most of the work you can do yourself.
