  1. Good on everyone who has helped clean up after others! Good on ya Mike for setting the guy at Timmies straight. I've done similar things in the past and never thought twice about it (giving people crap for tossing garbage on the ground).

I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page with one thing though, which was touched on earlier.

CIGARETTE BUTTS ARE TRASH! If you smoke, save your used butts in your pocket or ash tray and empty them out at a later time into a garbage can.

Do they smell? Yes, but that is your problem not mine or the environments. You choose to smoke, so choose to throw your garbage into a garbage can. Don't throw it onto the ground and step on it, don't try to grind it up under your foot so no one notices, don't flick it out your window (good way to cause a forest fire), don't make excuses.

    Don't do it.

  2. They have more Championships than the Ottawa Profesional Sports teams.

    haha, beat me to it!

With regards to JVR possibly moving to centre, I'm not sure about this. He is a natural winger and was only moved to centre in college because they had injury problems, if memory serves me correct. When he was drafted by the Flyers he was drafted as a winger (the move to centre in college happened after the draft), and the move to centre was not appreciated by the Flyers management. So we'll see how the experiment at centre works out for him as he is a big body (though not a checker by nature).

Bozak can hopefully up his game and fill the centre role if JVR doesn't work out there.

Tim Thomas? I'd rather not make the playoffs for another 5 years than have that ignorant self serving bum on the Leafs.

  3. Personally, I only take signs of those sort into consideration when going out fishing. I fish small headwater tributaries all the time and I pay heed to those that I feel are legitimate and within the confines of the law and don't pay heed to those that aren't. I might occasionally be wrong, but I don't let signs dictate the law when they are put up by individuals, only by the Government.

Often signs are put up as deterrents to others to prevent people from using a piece of public property, such as the case with many beach front properties in Georgian Bay. People will do whatever they can get away with.

Read the rules as you have and do what you feel is within the confines of the law. If there is an issue, explain your reasoning and if you're in the wrong, apologize. Simple as that.

  4. Additionally, if anyone has some ideas or links to where I can find an inexpensive copy of Bluechart g2 for Ontario, or the Backroads gps maps for Ontario I would be greatly indebted. I'm really thinking about dropping the cash on the Oregon, but I'm a bit worried about spending almost as much on maps.

I've seen some of the Ibycus maps, but I've heard there might be torrents with what I'm looking for. PM's readily accepted! :thumbsup_anim:

  5. 1) The Leafs have some pretty decent defencemen already, and their prospects are also pretty solid on the blue line. So it would be nice to get Suter, but not for that ridiculous contract.

    2) Parise isn't worth nearly that much. Period. Look at comparable contracts and point production.

The Wild need to attract some attention for their fans, but these two players are not worth the superstar contracts they got. Suter is definitely a top two d-man on any team but that contract will hurt the Wild in the long run. Hopefully this move won't end up causing the team to move, but I believe within the next five years the Wild will be looking to relocate. Not just because of these two contracts, but it will be the catalyst.

I'm sufficiently happy with how Burke has been playing this out. He hasn't gotten himself tangled up in ridiculous signings this off season and the notion that we NEED Nash is overrated. Yes, Nash is a good player, but Columbus isn't going to move him unless they get a kings ransom. Let me assure you, Nash is a good player, but definitely not worth giving up all our depth (and cap space) to get.

There are lots of good first line centres available for trade and I hope Burke keeps his lips shut to the media so they don't ruin it for everyone. The ridiculous media intensity (and micro analysis) around the Leafs is in my eyes the primary issue that needs to be fixed. With Burke keeping his cards close to his chest, hopefully we can make some moves to improve the team.

Oh, and it would be nice to get Luongo but again not for a ridiculous price. Maybe Komi and a mid-level prospect or Komi and 3rd (or later round pick in 2013)

    Go Leafs!

  6. So I've been reviewing some packing lists that people have put together for Algonquin, which are pretty amazing. I really like that aspect of our community.

I'm heading up there in about two weeks for about 4 days with my girlfriend (finally convinced her to come out). I'm looking for some brookies ideally or lakers so I was wondering if anyone is willing to share some lakes with relatively short portages. In the off chance that someone might want to give me some ideas, PM me, I know we'd both really appreciate it. I have a few lakes in mind that I frequent in the Spring, but they are a bit far of a portage (3-5km) to bring a fibreglass canoe (lol). I'm going to be reviewing some topo maps, but if you can't provide lakes, does anyone know if there is a website that provides portage lengths or do I need to look up individual lakes?

What I'm really looking for though is information on biting bugs! I haven't typically gone up to AP in July, mostly Spring and Fall so I'm not sure what to expect bug wise. Anyone have an idea of what I can expect?

    Cheers!

  7. Man, these are all great ideas! I like the idea of enabling me to go on another trip, or at least coxing me to make the time in between writing the thesis for my M.Sc. I don't know if I would want the Knipix, but it's likely because I don't want to think about that time I got two treble hooks stuck in the joint of my thumb and had to pull them out with pliers... now that's a story lol... :thumbsup_anim:

I'll check out those models of GPS. I do have a Blackberry (don't give me a hard time... haha) but the gps is reliant on the cell signal if memory serves me.

I'll look into the Algonquin gift cert and what it can cover and I'll update those interested.

I'm pretty well versed about my local streams, but would anyone recommend some reasonably priced charters for salmon/trout on Huron or GB?

    Thanks again!!

gps, nope there are good cell's out there with that info other then topo maps. but some have maps you can buy I understand.

rain gear, for sure! rather be comfortable and fish when you want then be limited to when you can fish.

gopro? I have one and didn't use it that much at all cause I didn't have a chest harnes (but I do now, thanks to Will! :thumbsup_anim: ) so I may use mine more.

Knipix cutters are a great tool to have in case you hook into a big'en and need to cut it loose or free a hook from your hand or other parts. they cut through hoohs like a hot knife through butter.

other ideas... minnow bucket with a pump and you can always use a good spool of line too.

Camping, fishing, hiking and even photography are not really about the gear, but the experience. So, IMO, the best gift would be somehow enabling that.

Not sure if Algonquin does or not but along the gift card line would camping permit/gift card for Algonquin or another park you would like to try. Forces you to have to go on another trip but some of the cost would be already covered. As far as a gps goes, you had the correct brand just the wrong model. I would look at the 60/62 cx(waterproof but does not float) or a better choice would be a 76cx(waterproof and floats). They all have the same screen size and are color. Garmin has very good topo maps for them as well as hydrographic maps.

A guided trip with either one of the local stream guides, or a salmon/trout charter on one of the Great Lakes. I'd make it Huron, so you can comfortably eat your catch!

  8. You people are awesome! I appreciate the tips :D

I didn't get out carp fishing in Burlington this weekend, but I did try my luck off a pier I had been eyeing for quite some time.

Managed a 15lb chinook on Saturday afternoon! Surprising to say the least, as I figured they would be out over the deeper water still. Then this morning I thought why not try my luck again, and slammed a 30"+ steelhead. Due to my lack of pier fishing equipment (no big landing net to lift them the 6ft) no pictures to prove my worth, but the experience has me lickin' my chops again to 1) buy a big net, 2) get my butt back down there.

  9. Montsberg is one place where this is very apparent. Lots of no speak the English there too.

You just turned an otherwise valiant attempt to point out where someone was possibly doing something wrong, into a strictly ignorant comment. It's too bad you stooped to the level of societal ignorance to finish making your point. Next time, try it without bringing up someones perceived ethnic background. I (maybe others) might take what you say a little more seriously.

  10. So I went out to a storm retention pond that is way back in the bush beside a 400 series highway last night and hammered some 5-10lb carp. You could see hundreds across the pond splashing, surfacing, or generally causing a ruckous.

I was wondering if people would be willing to provide me with a couple spots to drop a line for some carp in Burlington. Either in L. Ontario or not, doesn't matter. Just want to give the girlfriend a chance to catch a beast :)

You can PM me if you have some info you'd like to share and I promise not to leave garbage lying around!

    Any help would be appreciated!

    :)

  11. Still need more proven veterans, and when jfj was in charge the year he was canned, the leafs finished with more points than they did this year.JMO jigger. It only took Burke 3 years so far to make them worse.

You can rent lots of mediocre players by trading draft picks, to just scratch the surface of the playoffs as JFJ often did.

We are miles ahead of where JFJ left us, we had to fix what he broke, first.

  12. Come on boys, the Leafs are positioned to be able to make some moves and pull in some key pieces. Hopefully we are able to land a proven goaltender and a quality centre before the summer is out. I'm looking at tomorrow and July 1st to make some deals.

I wouldn't mind seeing Staal, Ryan, Parise, or Nash (not at the same asking price as at the trade deadline), in a Leafs jersey or even moving up in the draft to grab Galchenyuk. I have a strong feeling that Montreal will snag him before we get the chance, mainly so Toronto doesn't get him. Pretty petty, but I don't expect much else from the Canadiens.

Luongo would be a nice upgrade, but I'd rather make an offer sheet for Cory Schneider. $5 mill would only require a 1st and a 3rd I think. Not a bad deal and if the Canucks matched, then they would have no choice but to deal Luongo. No way they can keep over $10 mill in goalies going forward.

I don't want to see Schenn go as he is only 22 and Wilson basically messed the kid up. Same goes with Kadri.

That being said, I don't think there are many untouchables.

We should try and move up, but not if the price is ridiculous. We have been steadily getting better since Burke came, regardless of what the haters say. We had little to no prospects JFJ in charge and that has changed. It takes time to build a perpetual contender, but we are working towards that goal. It isn't an overnight accomplishment, but patience is not infinite. Burke understands this is likely his last year if they don't make the playoffs, so hopefully he doesn't do something for short term gain and longterm pain.

    Go Leafs Go!

  13. Great ideas so far!

I've considered a handheld GPS. Actually, I bought the eTrek20 from Garmin a couple months ago. I returned it a few weeks later for a few reasons. Mainly, I just didn't like it. Function, feel, combination of factors. My ideal GPS would be waterproof, relatively small and be compatible with very detailed maps (+topos).

Anyone have some suggestions for GPS's that you use for hiking, or fishing a river/backcountry stream?

    What brand is your favourite?

  14. So, my dirty thirty is approaching mid-July and I've been getting asked what I might want from friends/family. I really have no ideas and I don't think that will fly this year. So I thought, why not ask for ideas from my fellow fishermen!

My primary interests are; spin fishing for trout (bass to a lessor degree), photography, hiking, camping, Algonquin Park, etc. I occasionally fish from a boat (canoe mostly) so that has less importance to me. Oh, and I typically fish solo.

So without knowing what gear I already own, or what my biases are (besides the interests above), what would you ask for if you were in my position?

What is something you find invaluable that I should have!

    Let's hear your ideas!!!!
