  1. After a few frustrating meetings with a couple graduate advisors, I needed to take a break on my way home.

I haven't been targeting brown's lately as the temps have been just too high and the action had slowed down considerably from previous years. So I decided to stop by a lessor known spot and try my luck with my ultralight setup.

I got there around 7:45pm and only had about 45 mins or so of light left. It's a great location with a long pool about 3-4ft deep with downed trees in the water on the far side, with overhanging branches. I know there are big boys in there but not likely this time of the year, so I was hoping for a nice eating size brown.

With no bites, it was steadily getting darker and I was tempting fate by tossing my crankbait into the night sky so close to the lumber. There were a few close calls and near snags, but then I threw the perfect cast. 2" from the log. I let it drift downstream about 3-4ft (2-3 seconds), then gave it a good twitch.

SMASH! An explosion is the only way to describe it. I battled this beautiful 15 1/2" brown for about 5 minutes before I managed to land her. I don't know what it was, maybe the darkness or the initial smash, but this single brown eclipses all others I've caught this year (including numerous 19-22" ones).

I know it isn't the greatest picture (Blackberry with flash in the dark).

Back she went. I couldn't bring myself to harvest such a fine specimen, that brought me such joy on the water.

  2. Tragic Suicide After Pet Dog Is Destroyed:

I don't know why I bother commenting on this thread, other than to prevent users from taking what is presented here as fact.

In 1991, if memory serves me correctly we had a Premier by the name of Bob Rae, leader of the Ontario NDP. (Not McGuinty)

The legislation spoken about in this article (not sure where it originated from, as I found it on some website that anyone could make) is from 1991. http://www.endangereddogs.com/DDA-Suicide.htm

It does not make mention of the same statutes that were passed in 2005 and therefore is not relevant to your discussion of BSL in my opinion.

This young man obviously was not being provided the care, treatment/counselling, or restraint that was required of his situation. He did not die because of the legislation enacted in 1991, he died because he did not know how to continue on without his companion. This is unfortunate, but I would hazard to say a VERY RARE occurrence, unless the person in question maybe was dealing with some serious mental health issues. Did this young man suffer from undiagnosed mental health issues as well? I have no idea.

I am getting sick and tired of reading the bleeding heart stories being posted here and am just about ready to counter each one with an equally devastating story from a victim of a dog attack, whether it be a chocolate lab (my dog breed) or a pit-bull type dog.

Your political diatribe is getting old and I would appreciate you creating an email listserv of willing participants instead of spamming our fishing board with this one sided debate using stories that are designed to pull at heart strings, while not providing unbiased intelligent debate.

So my last comment in this thread, before matching story for story is this.

Create an email list Twocoda, where you can send weekly/daily/hourly updates on your cause and crusade. It would be more appropriate and it would be much more respectful of others who don't feel or do feel the same as you.

  3. Green Canada this is for you ...enjoy! and please do your homework on the author to try to debunk her impeccable reputation and passion as a person

I read the article you linked Dave, but I fail to see the usefulness of it when it comes to providing support for your argument against BSL. The article is written by someone who has a deep hatred for the Liberal Government it seems. I can commend Selma Mulvey for her overall use of sentence structure and grammatical wherewithal, but there is nothing of substance in her opinion piece that sheds new light on any aspect of BSL. What she needs to do is not alienate every single person who doesn't agree with her 100%.

When there is an issue that is so divisive, we must exhibit compromise, and empathy of the other side. This is especially important when your goal of repealing BSL requires the support of the people who voted for BSL in the first place (ie. voters in Ontario).

Being more open to discussion and compromise, not a one sided push of information is the only way this issue gets serious consideration.

  4. .Its important that everyone in the ridings of Vaughan and Kitchener/ Waterloo vote in the this upcomming Sept 6 "Buy" Election to remove the Liberal regime from a majority power and restore democracy in Ontario sending the message to Dalton that his antics will no longer be tolerated... Exercise your rights and send that message!

This issue is MUCH more than just "dogs" and the violations of our Charter of Rights

    Two things...

I believe the Liberal Party of Ontario do NOT have a majority Government right now.

Can you please provide evidence that this BSL is a violation of our Charter of Rights?

    Cheers.

  5. BSL might help prevent future attacks of this magnitude that occur with such ferociousness. I'm not saying that I fully support BSL, but to brand the preposed law as an infringement of our rights is silly. Sometimes the larger population needs to be protected from individuals who raise dogs without proper due diligence, either through neglect or ill intentions, or due to their own naivety. By keeping a pet that has the been bred to maintain attributes best suited for causing physical harm, it is reasonable to assume that that pet has a higher likelihood of harming a human being.

"Woman attacked by pair of pitbulls in Sundre

Mike Tarasko and Don Cook Aug 18, 2012 14:29:01 PM

A 26-year-old woman is in a Calgary hospital after being attacked by a pair of pitbulls early Saturday morning.

The victim was staying at a friend's home in Sundre, when the animals became violent.

The woman was bitten on her arms and face.

Adam Loria with EMS says they were called to Sundre around 2:00 a.m. to deal with the incident.

"We classified her as in critical, life-threatening condition and immediately transported her to the local hospital in Sundre," say Loria.

She was then flown to Foothills Hospital by STARS Air Ambulance with possible life-threatening wounds, but has since improved.

There are reports this is not the first time the animals have been hostile.

When officers arrived, they couldn't corral the two aggressive animals and as a result, one of the dogs had to be put down on-site.

The other will be held to check for rabies and a dangerous dog hearing will be held."

  6. Actually, i have a sizeable university debt that can confirm that i do know how to read but thanks for the welcome just the same!

I'm really sorry that your whole way of life was threatened by my saying it didn't make sense to keep fish to eat when other food abounds in great abundance...

I have been reading this forum for years and joined a few months back. Lots of helpful tips and stories to be read and to apply to my time on the water.

Enjoy your time on the water Woodsman. I know i will.

    Welcome to the community frodo!

I have been through college (3 years), BSc (4 years), and a MSc (2 years). I can tell you without a shadow of reservation, having university debt does not, in the slightest, confirm that you know how to read. I have met a vast number of people in university who can not read above a high school competency, let alone comprehend what they are reading and critically analyze it. A university degree not debt, might confirm you can read at a higher level than say high school, but it is just a piece of paper.

Knowledge is gained through experience and critical thought.

It's easier to get to know people and form new relationships when you don't immediately criticize their right to harvest when it is within their right to do so. It would be more constructive and logical to comment on the laws currently in place.

    Just my two cents.

    *edit* missed a word

  7. I'll have to try them!

    B)

Give the "Gar Par" a shot as well. I would suggest getting 3 or 4 pounds with a friend and get 1 pound of Farmer's Daughter, 1 pound of Gar Par, 1 pound of Ring of Fire, and 1 pound of Dusty Muckaroo. That is my All-Star lineup!

I realize it's a little late in the season, but who or where can a fellow buy one of these plants in the GTA area? Either the ghost or scorpion?.:worthy:

I also am interested in finding this out!

  8. I emphasize with Shayne's family capt bruce, and all others affected by the attack.

I'm finished discussing this issue as Terry continually shows a lack of compassion or understanding of the issues. He seems to want to believe this was not a racially motivated attack regardless of the facts and it seems he is trying to make excuses for what happened. I for one am surprised at his lack of respect for others in this thread and the underlying racial tone of some of his posts here.

I'm going to ask for this thread to be locked.

  9. so you like the term nipper tipping

cause that was the only thing he was referring to

again some young punk that had nothing to do with the crime coined the phrase and the media ran with it..I think what is disgusting is the media repeating this disgusting phrase and making it part or our lives.....

reporting the crime is a good thing, trying to make it look like everyone from Georgina is running around burning crosses and attacking radical groups is silly

I don't think the media was trying to make everyone from the area in question guilt of racism, but there was an investigation conducted by the Ontario Human Rights Commission. I haven't had a chance to find the physical report yet, but here is a snippet I found interesting.

"The commission received more than 30 responses after setting up a hotline to gather information about attacks on anglers in southern and central Ontario.

Most of the submissions came from the Lake Simcoe, Peterborough and Rideau Locks areas.

According to the commission, Asian anglers were subjected to racial slurs and stone throwing. In some cases, their fishing equipment was destroyed and they were physically attacked."

sorry but that is a joke

read a story in the sun then the same story in the star

they make up the news to suit their point of view, well at lest twist it to suit them

The Sun is easily the most ridiculous media corporation in North America. Have you ever watched Sun News TV? It's a joke, it's like Fox News. I often rely on newspaper articles for basic information and then do research myself to form my own opinion.

It's a good thing you blew up the size of your "proof" statement, I may have missed it. I forgot to quote my earlier statement about how are we are sure that 1 of the 2 pushed into the water were white. The video you linked to was about the victim who suffered brain damage. He could have simple been in the car with his friends and may have not been the one pushed into the water. It is my understanding that there were 2 fishermen of Asian heritage fishing with a couple buddies, and 2 of the group were pushed in. There is no mention, to my knowledge who, besides the driver was pushed into the water. But thank you for enlarging the size of your response, it made sure I didn't miss it! :D

  10. Disgusting situation and he should have gotten more time regardless of it being a "hate crime". Assault of that nature should be punished to the full extent. To ram another vehicle with your own is in a whole different league than just pushing someone in the water (not that I condone that either). For what it's worth I would think using a vehicle like that should be considered assault with a deadly weapon or possibly even attempted murder...

    my 2 cents,

    AA.

    I couldn't agree more AA.

  11. The white bucket brigade is aptly named as they carry white buckets.

If you find the term to be racist, it's entirely within your own thought process.

It is not a term of endearment and not likely one that you would use to their face (unless you're insulting them), it is a way to disparage against a group of individuals. That isn't in my own thought process, it is merely an observation.
