  1. I'm in the process of making some brackets to mount a couple of lights on the front of my boat, my intention is to use them close to shore, docking and shallow waters. Coming across a stretch of big water though I'd have them off, I can see where they may cause some confusion to other boaters, anyway they would be as useful as lights on a plane high in the sky.

  2. I have yet to get the model #... but I think it is pretty straight forward... most of the re-search has led me to believe that the major things on these motors are used through the series.... I'm pretty sure its a 1980 model... and I have found a site with all the original part #'s... So i should be alright, I think ?

So to replace the oil, Should I just leave it on the stand how I have it now ? Ive read about the special filler adapter for the bottom end, Ill have to go out and get me some. I have to figure out what kind of oil is needed as well

yup leave it on the stand straight up and down and pump oil in from the bottom till it comes out the top hole, put the top screw back in quickly remove the filler adapter and put the bottom screw in. If you think you lost some oil you can top it up through the top hole.

  3. vacuum as much as you can, an old paint brush works good too, make sure the plate under the flywheel is not seized usually they rotate a few degrees. look for any chewed through wires and tape the rest well, those are the two lower unit screws take them both out drain and fill back up through the bottom hole. Prop is fine. I might take the plugs out squirt some two stroke oil in and pull it over a few times and put new plugs back in.

  4. follow your owner's manual recommendations, in most cases it will tell you not too. Overdrive components are meant to support the requirements of the vehicle alone and not that of an additional trailer. I use my judgment here though, say if all I have is my aluminum boat around a 1000lbs on the flat with the wind behind me I will use OD.

  5. I find myself with OFC on whenever I can, I take my laptop out to the shop have OFC on keep hitting the refresh button to stay up to the latest subject matter at hand. When I'm in the car I have it on my BB, I try not to be the driver when ever I can. I wish I could comment more on fishing subjects but for now all I can do is read them and put my 2 cents in on other topics. I'm fairly new and maybe after some time it might get to a normal amount of time to spend on the computer, but I see there are some members with thousands of posts so maybe not. At least getting out and actually fishing will provide a break in the OFC addiction, but then again maybe I will have some fishing reports, Hopefully!

  6. George it may seem that way but there is usually a little more to it than that. Just because you add the capability of more flow at the intake doesn't mean the engine is capable of pulling it. Porting often comes into play here as well as exhaust. It may have the same bore and stroke but the ports might be smaller.

I see, I'm not surprised that there are are changes necessary to get the hp rating up. I tend to agree with what someone else said, sell the 9.9 and buy the 15hp.

  7. nice set up...just a question for you though. What made you decide to mount the electronics where you did, rather than right across form you on the starboard side. I know personally with the location there i would be turning too much, rather than mounting on the opposite side? Just curious...no offence if taken.

    Thanks

No offense at all to worry about, I agonized for days and weeks on what to put where but that is the starboard side, I think maybe you meant across from me which would have been the port side in this case. Simply the reach was too far having everything on the opposite side I am tilling from, if I remember the beam is 70" and I would have had to stand to reach control buttons and the screens were too far away to see. The seat swivels and that will help, a bit of a tiller extension would have me sitting facing almost forward, who knows when I actually get out on the water I may have to move things around.

  8. well thanks for all the replies, there is some good information. I've been sitting in the boat making motor noises trying it out sitting on both sides of the boat. I've decided to stay with tradition and till with my left hand, even though making turns to the right will be a bit of a reach, a little handle extension would be nice. I went ahead and mounted my gps, fish finder and switch panel all within reach of my right hand.

  9. I have my new Yamaha outboard calls for a 25 to 1 fuel to oil ratio for the first 10 hours. I'm good with this it sounds right but then they are talking about a 100 to 1 ratio, now I've been away from outboards for sometime and I know things have changed but that seems pretty lean. Are you guys sneeking in a little extra oil when your mixing for your out board or are you following the recommended mix? Hey and no smart answers from you 4 stroke guys! :dunno:

  10. I installed my tiller style Yammy outboard onto my boat today and I know from studying the boating guide it talks about sitting on the starboard side of the boat to operate the motor. My boat has two seats at the back from which the tiller is accessible, to me it feels much more comfortable to sit on the port side of the boat and operate the outboard with my right hand. In fact the the throttle handle and the shifter are all on the front port side of the outboard making it easier to reach from the port side. I'm wondering if I'm braking any kind of rules, a mariner's code or something if I choose to operate my tiller from the port side of the boat?
