How goldfish became a lucrative Great Lakes commercial catch "

Wow, who'd of thought!  Commercially harvesting goldfish for the table!

Thanks for posting that Ohio.  Fascinating.  I was especially fascinated by the Michigan Biologist who said; I think most purists and biologists would prefer not to have them as part of the wild environment, but I'm not sure they meet the classification of harmful," said Goniea. For that reason, they aren't, per se, "invasive."

Here in Hamilton( Lake Ontario ), they've been pretty much demonized.  lol

  2. Just saw an article in the Hamilton Spectator last week that said there have been several catches of Tilapia in Hammy Harbour as well as a Chinese Crab and this catfish found in the aquarium trade.

Not just reproduction to be concerned with but the transfer of diseases to native species.

  3. Here's a Hamilton Harbour shot I took at sunrise yesterday.  Talk about red sky in morning.

Well, I hope sailors took warning because the sky opened up around 2 in the afternoon with wind and rain that made it look like the world was ending!!

    PS...Gorgeous Simcoe Lakers there Brian!

  4. Definitely a productive time of year, wantabigone, but not at the spots you fished earlier in the season.  Those springs spots( like river and creek mouths as examples )may have worked in May and June are usually void of fish by now.  I find that deeper waters that have finally warmed up to the carps liking at this time of year can hold fish, and hungry ones!

    Good hunting!

  5. Earlier this year, I was carp fishing along a quiet shore of Hammy Harbour.  All of a sudden, around the wooded shoreline comes a dozen, then a hundred, then thousands of cormorants.  I'd had never seen such a big migration of the birds, and they all began landing and settling down right in front of me.  After I got over the spectacle before me, I got up, moved towards the water and waved my net over my head frantically.  This seemed to spook a few, then more, and then in unison, thousands of them took off like they were never there.

    Quite something to witness.

Sounds like the L Erie shoreline. Summer cottagers buy goldfish and Koi when they open their cottages, then dump them into the lake when they close their cottages in the fall.

Wow.  I can't imagine why anyone would even think that's a good idea to do.  You shake your head.

  7. I think the walleye fishery will be safe in the harbour.  Of course, some people will consume the fish, but I'm betting the vast majority won't.  Also, it's not a shore fishery so most will need a boat to fish walleye.

I believe eating fish out of the harbour is a big mistake.  The toxic Randle Reef, especially now that's it's being disturbed as it's being capped, as well as the old Woodward water treatment plant spewing into the contained harbour and toxic algea bloom every summer are just a few of the reasons.

Also, people who choose to windsurf in the harbour do so at their own risk, me thinks.

  8. I  used to enjoy walking out to drill a few holes for perch on Cook's Bay every Christmas Day.  Mind you, that's years ago when our winters used to be colder and more stable.  Anyhoo, it used to be me and a bunch of Russians and other ethnic fellows who celebrate Christmas on January 7th.
