The last few weeks I've been stalking White Tails at first light. Literally arriving just as the sun get above the horizon, around 7:30am and have been back in the car between 8:30 and 9:00am. Light (imo) is everything. Then it was off to some local tribs to get some practise in on an unfamiliar subject matter People Made even tougher as I'm avoiding taking Lift and Grins. Bascially trying to record events and incorprate a sense of "being there" versus the cliche "look at this fish" shot. Hope you enjoyed the mini series.

It depends on what you mean by alot Some shots/sequences can be as little or no more than 1 to 3 images, others I might choose to keep 1 frame from a 8 frame burst. Some days I go out and struggle trying to decide which 100 to keep from 500. Others days I struggle to to take 50 for lack of subjects Either way, yes when you use a high speed body like the 1DmkIIn at 8.5 frames/second and a 24 image buffer *and* you shoot wildlife in action. There are days when I'm filling 2 and 4 gig cards. Heres 3 of 4 images in sequence which represents a half second in elapsed time. In sequence 1 2 4 ( 3 isnt available) So as you might imagine on a good outing where theres alot happening blowing through 300,400,600 images is not all that hard. The hard part is deciding which ones to keep. Typically if I got a good sequence of 3 to 6 frames Id only keep 1 or 2.

The last 3 weekends I've made a point of getting down to Lake Os shoreline for first light, in an effort to build something of a series comprising winter blue skies, first light, Ice and water. Its made for some cold fingers at -10 or so and some frozen pants when ive ventured too far below the waterline but it's fun if not always comfortable This shot I (and my camera) got soaked. In trying to capture some wave action, this one which seemed to pretty mild, broke right beside me catching me by surprise as evidenced in the lower right corner. By the time I got out harms way and got my balance after slipping on the iced over rocks, the spray droplets were frozen on my lens hood, barrel and body . Id have deleted the shot but decided to keep it as a reminder that there are limits. Undaunted after the near mishap I went back out the next weekend. Once the sun was too high I went stalking some Whitetails. Thats for another post but heres a teaser.

Hi Mistyjr. Most of my wildlife pictures will have been taken with a 400mm f5.6 prime Lens, usually wihtout a 1.4 TC, as I prefer the fastest possible focus speed, but sometimes when reach is more important I add the TC. The body I'm currently using is Canons 1DMKIIn, although alot of my older stuff like the wolves and stuff would have been taken with Canons 30D. When wildlife shooting I always have my gear mounted on a Bushawk. It makes shooting Birds in flight alot more intuitive and adds some support when at low shutter speeds. Heres the 400 and 30D mounted on the Buhhawk

I know some people on various boards have trouble linking photos that are hosted on photobucket. While I dont know the solution I do know theres one out there.

My monitor at work doesnt have the best of graphic cards and everything is alot darker when viewed on it. I'll have another look at it when I get home. But it looks like it could be an immature Red Tail.

It occurred to me after a comment in my other thread that I should expand a bit more about the Wolf shots. The wolves are "semi" domesticated and trace their roots to Michigan. Its not like what you'd find in a zoo but not entirely free either. They are part of preserve and for the most part are free ranging, limited only by the enclosure that surrounds their 15 acre tract. Human interference/interaction is minimal and is more of a scientific study to observe natural behavior rather than "display" them as what you might find at a zoo. All shots were taken with a 180mm Macro and through 1 inch of glass. Enjoying the sun. Enjoying the shade. If your ever around Minden it's well worth a visit to the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife preserve. The chances are observing Wolves in anything remotely similiar to a natural enviroment are remote at best. Theres alot more to do there as well.

Nothing wrong with those ccm. I processed a few of mine last night. Just installed CS3 and wanted to try it out. Once Im more familiar with it I'll do more or redo what I've done. Before the eclipse started I wanted to experiment with stacked TCs. While the extra glass and manually foucsing took a toll on image quality the result was ok. Full moon at 1,100mm ( as a result of stacking TCs) and cropped. And heres a couple eclipse shots at 730mm and cropped a bit.

Send me a pm if you ever see one. The bird in question is a Harris Hawk and is part of a Falconry series I'm working on. Her name is Artemis and shes a first year bird. What your seeing on her legs are either the Jesses which are used as restraints by her handler. Or your seeing her "Chaps" which are there to protect her legs and Talons from bites which can occur when she takes down Squirrels, Rabbits and the like. J

As for copyright I'm not overly sticky about things and if asked generally dont mind if people want a smaller copy such as what I've uploaded to the web which are typically 1024x760. Some I won't as they may be in an editors hands for possible publishing but with that exception I generally dont say no. Im what you might classify as an advanced amateur, I do this for fun not a living. My whole life has been in the outdoors/fishing and stepping over into "Outdoor" photography was an easy but addictive step. If you see an image that clicks in your mind as one you could use for the basis of a watercolor, ask away. The worst I can say is no. J

Very nice Pam. I started shooting about 30 minutes before the eclipse with a couple moon scapes. Then tried to take a couple every 15 minutes or so of jut the moon. Its soo cold my finers are numb after a couple hours out I'll have some to share in a couple days once I go through them

As mentioned in the Lunar Eclipse thread, been a long time lurker of OFC and have enjoyed this forum and the pics here. Finally decided to sign up and participate some here. Thought to add some pics here by way of introducting myself while waiting for the eclipse to advance. My main photographic interest is Wildlife and in particular Birds of Prey. Heres a small sampling. Couple Harris Hawk images Northern Harrier Coopers Hawk Snowy Owl Lots more where they came from but I like 4 legged wildlife to Even Deer can fly on occasion. Wolves to Dabble in a little macro A little landscape and of coarse fishing Im sure in time I'll be adding lots more

Thanks ccm. I'm east of the GTA so I'll be under the same skies as you. Not far from country either so if it really nice and clear I may head north a bit to a bit further from the light pollution.

Long time lurker, figured this post was as good as any a way to start Been looking forwards to this event for weeks. Hopefully this time around unlike the summer one the skies will be clear and I'll get a good look and images. Took a few sample images the other night just to refamiliarse with shooting the moon.
