  1. As mentioned, getting a patent can be very expensive. Even if you did get one and someone copies it, taking them to court is even more expensive and not even an option unless you're a fairly large company. Sure, you can mail something to yourself or get it notorized to prove prior art, but again, I'd imagine you'd have to go to hire a lawyer to pursue a case.

However, there are multiple stages to patenting something. I believe submitting a patent isn't that expensive. I always imagined that is why you see so many "patent pending" statements on things.

You might be better off trademarking a name and developing a brand. Then sell that.

  2. Got an email from SAIL showing a 20% off storewide sale from November 27th to 30th.

Sounds good to me! Even the Sasquatch is surprised, lol. No idea why they chose that.

I couldn't find it on the website though.

  3. Someone posted a link this MNR discussion paper on another board that talks about the new fee. Thought it would be useful to post it here.

    It's on page 20.

Basically, the revenue stream is not keeping up with the costs. They are charging the $2 to help pay for processing the licenses.

Sure it's only $2, but that's not the point is it?

My issue is that government tends to be incredibly inefficient and stagnant. Charging more money or taxes or fees is the easy way out. At least they are exploring new options to increase revenue as per that document. Of course, reducing costs and increasing efficiency should be the priority. Something that all levels of government fail to accomplish.

  4. What an excellent looking trip you guys had. Thanks for sharing it!

That beach looks great, but at the same time I envision sand getting EVERYWHERE in the cabin. I hate sand.

When I first read about the derelict Ogoki Lodge I thought to myself, "I have to buy that if I ever win the lottery ;)". Such a cool looking place and it seems such a shame all that effort going to waste. Well, at least I'll have a destination in mind during the zombie apocalypse.

  5. The other disappointment was the other cabin on our lake. There is another Cabin on Mikwam owned by a nice fellow who informed us that he drives up, takes a short argo ride into his cabin. It's a bit frustrating to go to a remote lake to only find out someone else is on the same lake as you. Quite upsetting.

I hadn't realized there was another cabin on Mikwam. Is it actually on the lake or on the river?

Excellent website. Lots of good info there. Not just about outposts but preperation too!

I especially like the "breakfast-on-the-go" bacon & egg muffins!

Thanks! I just finished putting the recipe up for ya =) Was planning on a recipe section, just hadn't added it yet.

  6. I had some mice in my garage and bought a few different traps. I baited them all with Wowbutter (PB substitute).

This one FAILED (Victor Rodent Trap):

    This one worked (Wilson Predator):

This one worked (Victor Tin Cat) as long as it was put in the correct spot. It had five mice in it when I cleaned it out:

Honestly, I think the snap traps have a high fail rate regardless of which ones you use. They are fairly cheap though so you can set up a bunch. The live trap is probably the best and unfortunately the most expensive.

  7. My dog, a Maltese/Yorkie mix, was recently attacked by a German Sheppard on our street during a routine walk. The dog bolted out of the owners car or house and just attacked. Fortunately, my dog only received a minor injury. The same dog did something similar to someone else early in the summer. I haven't reported anything yet because I wasn't sure if I should or if it's even worth it. What are they going to do? Give them a stern warning? People like that don't care or it wouldn't have happened at all. My biggest concern is if my daughter is walking our dog alone and it happens again. It makes me so uncomfortable that I don't let my daughter walk our dog alone any more.

  8. Thanks for the article, well done!

I am sitting trying to wonder why the heck my family doesn't make me a banner when I arrive home from my fishing trips.....guess they are disappointed I came back!

As an aside, have you every given a presentation on nursing up in your area? I think it would be of interest down this way.

  9. We used to go to Elmhirst Resort on Rice Lake every year when I was younger. Nice place. Has a pub, a restaurant and a wine tasting room. Also indoor and outdoor pools, a game room. Somewhat pricey, but the cottages are really nice and it's really not that expensive if you look at places in the Muskokas. Even the least expensive cottages are nicer than most cottages I've stayed at. I haven't been in a couple years though.

  10. Sounds like a great trip regardless of the little bumps. Those smiles in the photos really say it all!

Thanks for spending the time to put together and post your trip report. It's always nice to get a taste of the adventure from places we may never get to experience for ourselves. Also, I have a list of outposts with indoor toilets if you want it!! Lol.
