Yeah, I'm not sure how serviceable those stoves are.

Do you have a multimeter? If so, disconnect and check the resistance of the coils. From what I can read you should be seeing 20-40 ohms, infinite resistance would indicate a burned-out coil.

thanks for the reply.  I don't have a multi-meter but will see if I can borrow one.

  2. Recently the large coil on my Frigidaire  glass top stove stopped working.  the coil is the one that has 2 setting ( big and small size pot).  The screen on top of the temperature knob shows HE (hot element) permanently since the coil stopped working.  Turning the knob doesn't do anything but if I place my hand on the glass top, I can feel slight vibration as if the switch is sending signal to the coil.  I'm tempted to replace the coil, but wanted to check here first and see if it could be something else.

    Thanks

you can get a humminbird 700 series GPS Sonar with down imaging for like $400 from the US bass boards easily. A lot more reliable then navionics on your phone, plus you will have a really excellent sonar.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will pass it on to him.

Any good cost effective lowrance units out there?

I'm no expert on Salmonids. I was told if it's lips aren't black it is a Trout.

2 guys in a speedboat trolling for fish on Lake Ontario. You don't see that everyday. But there was a time we fished out of a Speedboat with 300 horse strapped on the back on Erie for Smallmouth. We turned plenty of heads at the ramp for sure. One of those Bass Boats are nothing more than Speedboats with fisherman in them. I look at Sonar and GPS as a safety tool as much as I do a fish finder. Been caught more than once in pea soup without a compass heading. I don't even want to think what we would do if we didn't have GPS. Tell your buddy he has to invest 500 bucks in a combo Huzz. It's in your best interest to chip in towards it especially if you are going to go out on big water with him regularly. You guys are fishing blind. I don't know anyone with a boat that fishes that doesn't have at least Sonar today they are so inexpensive now. A buddy picked up a nice Humminbird colour combo at the Hamilton Swap meet for 200 bucks including an ice fishing set up.

You're absolutely right  that we need to invest in a few items.we did have GPS and all other safety equipment and stayed within sight of where we launched. We used the navionics app to check the depth we were in and kept adjusting the depth we were fishing to avoid snagging the bottom  with the cannonball. I am pushing for him to get a sonar unit more so for the safety reasons you mentioned. I may just give him mine since I plan to buy a new one for ice fishing.

That's difficult to ID with the shadow over the mouth but it is 100% not a steelhead/rainbow trout. It is 100% Salmon. Coho or Chinook.

Thats what I thought as well that its a salmon after noticing the color of the mouth.  was not light color like the rainbows/steelhead I caught last year.

thinking its a coho.  doesn't look as mean looking as the kings look lol

Here are a few photos of the head

  6. So I got a text from my friend with the speedboat asking  if I wanted to go out to the big Lake (Lake O) to try our luck at catching anything, so I agreed.  We set out this morning. Plan was to start by 6:30am but was 7:30am by the time we left the ramp.

if you read my report last year, you will remember that we tried this last year with no sonar, no down-riggers, no real experience and were rewarded with 3 nice steelhead.

This time, we had manual down-riggers, but still no sonar.  We used the navionics app and it was somewhat useful.

Anyways, we setup 2 rods, one at 40 feet deep with a gold Williams wabbler spoon, and I set mine at probably 20 feet deep (no line counter on my side  down-rigger)  with a Williams whitefish spoon I bought for ice fishing.

As usual nothing for the first hour and then my rod starts bouncing. I grabbed the rod and struggled to get it unclipped from the clip, but finally got it released and reeled in a beautiful salmon.  Not big at all, probably 3-4 lbs but a fish nonetheless.

We trolled for another 2 hours but no luck after that.  All in all, a great morning on the calm waters of Lake O.

By the way I need you guys to confirm it is a salmon or steelhead since the inside of the mouth was blackish including the tongue.  the steelhead I caught last year had white color mouth.

  7. Need to get away for a day or two so planning to go camping at wheatley with the family this weekend.  Thinking of wheatley because of the warmer weather down south ( our canadian south ), and also I heard its a nice park and area and want to check it out. Might also check out point pelee since I'm close by anyways.

Looks like best place to wet a line would be at the wheatley harbour. What should I expect to catch at this time of the year? What bait should I use? minnows?  I know worms are the easiest but not sure of the goby situation on erie and would hate to weed out through a bunch of gobies.

Not planning to cast and retrieve, rather just simple split shot and hook off the bottom. Peaceful fishing in other words :Gonefishing:.

Also is the south pier better or the north pier?

Praying the rain holds off for this weekend :)

    Thanks

I got a call around 9 from a buddy that wanted to splash his boat for the 1st time this year and do a check out run and asked me to come along. Was on the Grand River at Dunnville 45 minutes latter. We did a short run down river and back up as I watched for deadheads, they are out there, beware and stay dead centre of the river, lots of sand bars because of fast high water this time of year.  Might as well bring a few rods and a handful of shrimp from the freezer. I know a secret Cat hole close to the Dunnville Dam. It is very close to the south shore about 200 yards from the bridge. It drops straight down 15' and then comes back up to 5'. A perfect  hole for Big Cats, on the banks, dark and colder water, 3 out of 3. Not so secret now eh guys. Only accessible by boat. I have 2 rods all set for Cats. Med-Heavy baitcasters with 30lb braid, a ball barrow wt. of 3/4 oz. and a razor sharp circle hook, #4 or #5 I think. Hook a uncooked Shrimp on it, a splash of scent and drop the line into the hole. You can't get any simpler than that. 5 minutes latter buddy got a nice 10 pounder and 5 minutes after that I swear I caught the same fish. Jim hooked into a monster that he couldn't get off bottom. Even with the drag set dangerously tight he couldn't  move it. I was sure he caught a deadhead until the deadhead finally moved a few feet and Jim knows how to handle a big fish. 25 minutes into the struggle the fish started to sound. Just after she moved he lost it. The braid came off at the hook, what a shame, the knot is a year old, man I'm getting lazy. I was kind of glad to a degree, OK happy because I was starting to freeze my fingers off. It might be 20 something in town but with that wind whipping down the river it ain't no 20 on the river, maybe 9C, maybe. Sorry no pics, I'll take a picture of a Cat if it tips the scales at 15 pounds. Actually I didn't think of it, maybe there will be a next time. There were a few other boats out there but not many. They are probably off the water by the time I have my 1st Cappuccino.

If you guys do head this way and want to launch at The Dunnville Yacht Club because of the construction of the new Farmer's Market there is very little parking if any. Head to Fishmaster's or the BBQ joint. Look for my now not so secret spot.

Huzzaba my man. Ali when I get the StarCraft running I'll PM you and get you out here as promised. The buds are starting on the Sugar Maples = Cat Time!!

EDIT: Downed peel the Shrimp and in cleaned/uncooked work best for us. I think the shell feels more natural to the Cat, like a soft shelled crab.

Love it when you go out not expecting anything and catch a big one.  Sharp hooks are a must!  Last time I was on the port maitland pier, I hooked into something big, but as you described, it was like a ton of bricks and we couldn't get it to budge off the bottom until the line snapped.

Thanks for the offer!  Would love to get out and experience the Grand!

  9. Drove from Montreal back to Mississauga yesterday.  Most of the drive was just managing stay in my lane!  This was with a brand spanking new rental chrysler pacifica with 6 passengers in it.  Another guy I know was driving his semi from Quebec to Mississauga and had to stop in Kingston to rest cause his shoulders were hurting from fighting to keep the truck in control

At one point we had to dodge pylons that were scattered all over the 401 causing major traffic jam eastbound near kingston.

Came home to find out gazebo canopy all mangled up :( and other stuff thrown around. Weather has been pretty crazy in 2018.

  10. Good luck with your fishing. Those roe bags look pretty good!

I too tied some steelhead roe for the first time which a friend gave me.  Hopefully the fish are not too picky on a badly tied roe bag lol!

Hoping to get out myself sometime soon on one of Lake O tribs.

hey I grew up fishing 16 mile creek and there are tons of fish there.  Bass, Walleye, Pike, Salmon, rainbows and browns just depending on the time of year.  All from shore!

    Cheers!

thanks for the heads up. will keep trying.  perhaps will bump into each other some day at the pier, or maybe we have lol.
