  1. We did the Labrador drive three years ago in July. Still some 0 degree nights but no issues. The gravel road was in better condition than most roads in Toronto. The only bad part was for about 50 km just outside of Happy Valley as they were still in the process of blasting and digging. Took 4 hours to go the 50 km but they just kept pulling all the equipment out of the way as we went along. Free camping along it's entire length in any of the gravel pits. Best road side fishing ever. Pike and Lake trout in every single culvert/lake we stopped at. A whole bunch of brook trout as well. It was 13 hours from Toronto to the ferry at Matane, QC. Only had one night where we got eaten alive by mosquitos. The tent trailer had 7 blown tires over this trip as the gravel road really heated the tires. Luckily we found 5 tires and rims for sale in Happy Valley but they all burst too but still made it back. NFL camping was about 40 bucks a night with full amenities.

  2. We drove through Labrador and took the ferry to the Northern tip of NF three years ago. We drove a truck with a pop up. NF was great. Stayed in some great camp grounds with full amenities that were empty. Fished for Sea Trout and did very well. The picturesque sea side towns were mostly gone! After that reno rebate they offered a few years ago we found lots of 'newly' sided homes near the water but they were all beige or white! Drove from L'anse Au Medow down to the southern tip. The best towns we found were east of Channel Port Aux-Basques on Hwy 470.

  3. A few years ago we did that drive in 24 days. At Winnipeg we took the Yellowhead highway up to Prince Rupert passing through Jasper. At Prince Rupert we took the ferry to Vancouver island then drove back through Banff and across Highway 1. This way we got to see more of Canada off the beaten track of Highway 1.

  4. Just finished my second batch of Salmon and it's waaaay better than the first. Used 1/3 cup of Kosher salt and 1 1/2 cups brown sugar in a container with 8 slabs of fish and covered it in cold water and let it sit in the fridge for three days. Smoked it for 2 1/2 hours on the BBQ. Like Fang said it's like slow cooking it cus the BBQ won't 'idle' down to a real looow heat. This time I only used one tray of Hickory wood chunks and it smoked like crazy for a good two hours. For the last half hour I turned off the gas and just let the wood smoke away. I didn't take the internal temps but just tried flaking a piece after the two hour mark and tried again at 3 hours and it was done and moist.

  5. I just smoked my first batch of salmon this week. I used a tin plate and filled it with wet chips and put it on the delfector. I didn't light the side the salmon sat on. Smoked it for about 3 hours. Came out very salty but smoky flavour. Next batch gonna cut the salt way down and add more brown sugar! I'm gonna try that tin foil bundle and see how that works out.

  6. I went up to a lake north west of Peterborough on sat that my neighbor owns property on. He told me for years about the musky in this lake so I figured I would check it out. It's in the Back roads book and has a boat launch symbol on it. When I got there I saw a hand written sign at the highway that said "No Public Boat Launch". I drove in anyways and saw that the lake is now surrounded in cottages and the boat launch had been bulldozed away. Can Cottage owners do that? I am assuming it was the cottage owners due to the hand written sign. I couldn't access the lake to launch my small boat so ended up fishing on the Otonabee for bass.

  7. Hate to have to revive this old thread but i'm in need of a satelite phone. We are heading out to the end of the James Bay Road in a couple of weeks for a nice long drive and camp. I'd like to rent a satelite phone and i'm wondering if anyone can add any more ideas to this thread? I tried helloanywhere and they appear to be out of business. I will be getting the Irridium but would like to find a place in the GTA to just go and pick one up. If all else fails I will go with that one from Roadpost. Thanks

  8. Bought and sold loads of stuff on Kijiji. When people do actualy show up I make a big show of unlocking the shed or the garage and usualy a big heavy chain and lock before showing the stuff. Once I listed a crappy Ikea couch and it didn't sell so I put it on the lawn with a 'free' sign taped to the middle pillow. Went back out side 20 minutes later and some one had taken just the one 'free' pillow. I had to toss the rest of the couch.

  9. I was up Deer Hunting and went to Canuck Tire and I saw they had their Frabil Ice suits on clearance. Down from 319.99 to 179.99. Had to go to three stores before I found a large size. Lots of XL, XXL and Mediums around. Not sure if they are the best suits for early spring and late fall but at that price worth giving a try.

  10. wow and here I though Nipps Pickeral fishing had rebounded. We stopped fishing there for 10 years because of a lack of catching. Got back into it three years ago with Grumps ice huts and it's been very good to us for the past three years. Buddy landed a 9 lbr last year through the ice on 4 lb line! Can't wait for the ice.

  11. I work at one of the designated Hospitals where positive patients will be transfered too. As of last week we had no equipment to handle any of the specimans we get. Now that people are speaking out the supplies are pouring in. When flu season hits I figure Health Care will be bankrupt in North America. They are making the same mistake they did with Sars. Anyone coming into Emerg with symptoms isn't sequestered right away. They need to put a second entrance into the Hospitals and have a screener at the doors to point you in the right direction but all this costs money so it isn't going to happen. Double gloves and gowns for me now at work.
