  1. I worked in the aviation industry as an avionics technician for over 35 years. Many of the instruments we did had a requirement to be tested for insulation resistance on a "Megger" tester which tests the insulation properties of wiring will under higher DC or AC voltages to see if the insulation breaks down. Some Instruments often had breakout boxes that would plug into the connector and every single circuit would be tested against every other one. This was also done to test the integrity of the wiring in rotors, stators, commutators and windings in transformers, motors and generators. There were also some tests that could be done using older analog ohm meters like a Simpson on the higher RX1000 scale that had higher voltage outputs that could detect insulation breakdown. I've even had motor stators test within tolerance but on the low end that barely passed speed tests, so I always replaced them. We also had a tester called a growler that you would place a rotor on and slowly rotate it to find shorted coils in the windings. So what I'm getting at here is that even though the windings on that rheostat could test out ok with a digital multimeter once power is applied there could be insulation breakdown that is causing your issues. Insulation can also break down at elevated temps as coils heat up. Here's a couple of articles on insulation resistance. Also keep in mind that any continuity test testing grounds should have less than 1 ohm readings, anything higher indicates poor ground.

  2. I follow the Fish Ecology and Conservation Ecology Lab from Carleton University on FB and they just posted a link to this research article that they agree with. Some nutbar countries including Britain have passed legislation recognizing fish and even invertebrates as sentient beings that require protection under animal welfare regulations if you can believe that nonsense. Here's a link to the complete article.

Absolutely does not need to be changed..   Then you'd have guys targeting OOS fish just to get pics with them.   There's a season for a reason.

Totally agree, on some sites that photo would get you booted. If you want a pic with a musky fish for them in season, simple as that. Or else get a pic taken as you land the fish.

The blue stabil is for marine use. The big difference is the blue creates a fog in the tank and keeps it from rusting. I have used it for years from a 28ft boat that lives in the water to all of my small engines. Anything that does not get fresh gas within a month gets treated. I like sea foam as well but use it as a fuel improver rather than a stabilizer.

Hmm, it lasts 2 years as a stabilizer and also prevents phase separation for  all those E fuels.

That time of year...Speckles and Fiddleheads. Both require the same 4 ingredients, and nothing else. Butter, Lemon, Salt & Pepper..

Looks like Morels need another week.

Yea I got my first pick of fidleheads in yesterday, just under a pound for now. Back out to check my other spots on Thursday. The ones right up against my foundation are up, that's my signal. Leeks are well up but not swelling yet. This pic is from April 13.

Geez, I hope this thing lasts me the year  without major headaches.

i guess I should be considering a re-bore and new rings sooner than later? Will this just die on me? Or is this more of a slow death?

    Starting to regret this now.

Don't start regretting now. Get that engine fixed soon and you'll never have to worry about it blowing up on you. The boat looks real nice.

arrived today and installed in minutes! Holes line up perfectly. Need to get the boat launched again to put the winch to the test!

I'm still curious as to what actually failed on your old winch, if it was a stripped gear it should still have turned.

Not a fly-in, a drive to location, but close to GTA , about a 4 hr drive.

Lake Kipawa Quebec , 1 hr from North Bay, Ont

100 fish days can be had , probably more like 50 fish days usually.

Walleye , Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Lake Trout , lots of all species.

Half a dozen Oufitters camps, Charters, Houseboat rentals.

Large reservoir system of adjoining lakes, 2000 kms of shorelines.

I agree with Kipawa, there's a very special magic about that lake. I've been there a good 20 times and if I could I'd go back every year. Not near as many lodges anymore though, Alwaki for example is still open but is now severed and different lots are for sale. That's a 14 mile boat ride from the government dock in Kipawa and another 8 miles or so gets you to Hunters lake and Kipawa Lodge, it's always been considered the best of them all. Or else you can go in from the top end at Laniel and access more lodges.

  9. Boca may be the more expensive but they are also the best and will pay for themselves in the long run over cheaper ones. With the cost of reels these days it's worth it. I worked on a lot of aircraft fan assemblies and there was one in particular that needed to be overhauled after 100 hours. Well someone in purchasing decided to buy a cheap version of the same bearing and those motors started coming in to the shop with failures after 50-60 hours. So I went to my boss and he made sure that purchasing went back to the much more expensive bearings and there were no more issues with failed bearings. You'll never regret buying a quality product in the long run.
