  1. I'm guessing the mobile home was totaled even before it caught fire. Metal structures warp beyond repair and that baby had to be pretty hot from being next to the burning shed. I checked the property on the property tax rolls and it didn't seem to be much of a prize.

Gene Cranick built a roaring trash fire near the shed, the shed caught fire when ol' Gene went inside to shower and then the mobile home ignited. Burning mobile homes need to be located pretty close to the fire station if we expect firemen to save the structure. Might have been better to have it burn competely than to tear down and haul off the remains. Removal can be time consuming and costly. Who would pay for that?

  2. No way Brandon Phillips could have been awarded a hit as the last hitter. He was clearly running in fair territory the whole way, including the last 45' when he should have been between the foul line and the 3 foot line. He changed the catcher's throw.

  3. I'm perfectly happy with my Lowrance LCX-15 MT w/GPS, but I also realize that happy and dumb often go together. It's still doing the job for me, but I'm wondering if I need to begin convincing myself to upgrade. It was a bargain purchase for me in early 2005 and was my first sonar that told me the truth.

  4. Walleye opener is May 21 in 2011. Phil and I might go in the week before and stay two weeks. Hopefully we'll get together with Dan and check out a perogy at Lakeview Restaurant.

Yeah, I rousted Dan out of bed last May 13 when I hit Red Lake. He brought me current on his high school basketball success and seemed a little put out that I didn't recruit him back then. Way back then. Probably should have. Might still be coaching hoops if I had.

Catching fish is only one of the many rewards of being in the bush.

  5. I received this today from my friend, Dwayne, who lives in Iowa. Beatrice and I were fishing Little Vermilion Lake after the end of the first week of moose season around 1995. I'm not sure of the year, but we were there late in the season. Three camp owners, Dwayne, my dog Beatrice and I were the only ones in camp. I didn't know about the photo until today. Bea made several trips to Sportsman's, chased off a lot of bears, busted the water every time she saw a duck or goose, and kept us company on the water. She was a little over 14 years old when she was put down four years ago. She wasn't a champion, but she was a good fishing companion.

A few days after the picture we were hit with a storm that resulted with 15" of snow that kept us pinned down for three days. Walleyes turned off and we resorted to slicing our own moose steak from a hind quarter hanging in the fish house.

Pleasant memories for sure. Bea's nose prints remained on the driver side window of my truck until just a few months ago.

  6. Be proud of this guy. He's a super person and is scorching the National League with his bat:

Leading in home runs with 27

Leading in on base % at .420

    5th in hits with 119

1st in total bases with 222

    5th in RBI with 72

    1st in slugging % @ .600

3d in runs scored with 74

5th in bases on balls with 60

..............and he's an above average first baseman - also one of the best base runners on the team.

MVP??? At least a candidate if his team continues to win.

I've seen him play a bunch of games at AA Chattanooga, two spring trainings at Sarasota, FL and several games in Cincinnati since he went up to the big club.

There's not a nicer guy or harder worker in professional sports.

  7. I've ridden on two of the Norseman, the one from Chimo and the one formerly in use at Viking Air. Both nice rides. They'll haul a ton, but not on a hot day with sparse air. Rode one in August 1972 that had to turn around because of a hump in the road. Returned around 8 p.m. and lifted right off. In the heat of the day we made several attempts at becoming airborn. No breeze made it tough. Finally made it by riding the wakes of a couple of boats. Never got far off the water.
