  1. Marcum Showdown 5.6 Sonar

I've never used electronics for ice fishing. After reading many articles, posts and watching a few you-tube videos I think its time to try one. The Marcum unit looks interesting. Is there anyone who has this model or similar that can give me their opinion of it?

    Thank you in advance

    IFH

i have played around with them in the shop, nice units for sure. the info i received from the guys at marcum tech. is if you havent used a flasher before, then the showdown unit is one you should look at, its easier for a beginner to read with the linear graph. If you do have experience using a flasher then you should probably stick with the L-series flasher as they are technically a better unit.

  2. well thanks to a good neighbour of mine he is letting me use his back up rod and reel for now till i can find a good used one or a good deal on a new one!! being so close to xmas i cant afford a whole lot right now, espically when i only plan on using it maybe 5-6 times a year, i did get offered a sweet deal on a st croix, but just cant afford that much for just a rod rigth now, has anybody ever tried a okuma akena? any feedback on that reel?

keep Terry's setup until the end of the season and i will see what deals i can get you in november ;)

  3. When I was shopping my for last rod I wanted to try it out but for all my effort I just could not find a rod I liked. All the micro guide rods I got to handle felt like telephone poles.

Could go custom, acid wrap micro guides?

-I wonder how that would work

What was the brand that had the line run inside the blank?

    -don't see them around anymore

what rods were you trying, there are tons that i have handled that were very light sensitive

  4. I remember the 1st November OFC g2g we had at Quinte a few years ago and it was extremely rough, but the only boat that was swamped was a big bass boat. They sunk that boat down in the water all the way to the gunnels and the 3 guys aboard were up to their knees in water.

Some guys say their OK for rough waters, but when it gets nasty out, I'll take a deep-V anyday.

    Driver makes all the difference.

it is nice to see the organizers put the safety of its anglers first.

  5. What?????

    It's beautiful out today....

    Sunny

    Bluebird skys

    And reasonable wind

I guess that means I can go out and not be bothered...

20k wind gusting to 40k in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec according to environment canada

  6. I have been out on the lake in some serious rain this year and my Wetskins Jacket and Pants don't cut it.

Please let me know about some good rain suits with bib overalls/pants that will keep me relatively dry in 20 k.m. winds in the pouring rain.

Would like to have them for duty in Spring, Summer and Fall if possible. Or is it better to get different suits?

I just ordered the Shimano Dryfender 3T coat and bibs for myself.

  7. For a decent rod and reel "combo" you should be able to get something for less than $200. (Just basing on what i have in the store here you should be able to get something like a 6'6" Okuma Dead Eye 2pc Med rod and an Okuma Epixor 25b for less than $200 out the door). Take a look around though, if you are looking to spend more then look at the NEW Shimano Clarus Walleye Rods that are coming out. There is a 6'8" MH and 7' Med 2pc coming and should sell for around $125.00, I got to play with them last Sunday and they are a nice rod. Pair one up with a Sedona or Sahara and you will be golden.

  8. was smashing them this weekend on dropshotted wacky rigged senkos. 4 & 5"

im no drop shot expert though...this is just what worked for me.

Anybody use a baitcast setup? im more comfortable with a baitcaster, not sure if it is ideal though for this technique

nothing saying you cant, if thats what you are comfortable with then go for it. I am more comfortable with a spinning setup (7'2" crucial MED dropshot rod and stradic 2500)

  9. Sorry Rolly, forgot to mention i'm using a 7'2" Med Crucial with a Stradic 2500FJ. So far my best success has been with 20lb Power Pro with 15lb Seaguar Flouro Leader, size 1 and 1/0 Trokar drop shot hooks and 1/4oz - 1/2oz ball weights in LSC and 3/8oz - 1/2oz pencil weights in SCR. Seems too heavy with the leader but so far has worked out quite well.

if we get out before the classic you can take it for a spin.

  10. I believe the verdict was the one with problems, but i could be wrong. I know i had a verdict and it broke at the ferrule. For me sensitivity is important, because i use bait caters for all my fishing styles, includeing finesse.

brought in a bunch last year and had issues with breaking on 3/4 of them, read some reviews stating the same as well.

  11. The older gen crucials are better than the current ones. Many pros won't use the new ones, too tip heavy and unbalanced.

i have 4 crucials paired with stradics and 3 paired with chronarcs and find they balance nicely. nice and sensitive as well. Compre's are a very nice rod as well, and you cant beat the warranty.

  12. Hey all I was looking at get the dive lens from GoPro and was going to order direct from them but it looks like they ship from the USA only and use FedX or UPS I have sent them a couple questions about buying from Canada but have not got any reply's from them to my questions.

I was wondering if anyone has bought direct from them and knows if they will ship any other way like USPS?

if you dont mind hitting sombra Mike, ship it to the ferry (US address) and pick it up. they charge $5 to accept and hold it and you get it through customs faster and cheaper

  13. Debatet whether or not to post pics of mine but what the heck. only problem i have is that i have to sell it LOL. it does come in handy when i am going fishing and need something cause its usually on the shelf somewhere.

  14. Tie 3 feet of 8# fluoro leader to the spool with the 20# braid. That will handle everything you listed minus pike.

For pike, use your 30# braid and pickup some 12" pre-tied fluoro leaders, 80#. You'll have to tie them on and cut them off after use if only using one rod for both setups.

Visibility is not an issue for pike. All you're worried about there is tooth resistance.

exactly, i use 20# PP and vary from 8# - 15# flouro leaders depending on presentation. for pike, 30# PP and check the line (after every fish) and retie when necessary. i always tie direct and have not lost a lure yet.

  15. Don't think so - I had to show "other" id in order to renew mine. Pretty sure the Walmart guy typed something in the machine to reflect I used my driver's license.

    Michael

the only info the machines collect is name, DOB, height, eye colour, address, Phone number and the licenses you wish to purchase (also whether or not you wish to receive correspondence)
