  1. Hi Lew, and I was right there with you while these folks were ticketed. It just seems ridiculous to me. The only people they may have been endangering were themselves, and it wasn't like they were flaunting the law, after all they were wearing jackets and had two spares. $240.00 is a huge some for some folks. I think that maybe a better outcome would have been a warning with an opportunity to get a compliant jacket. What I thought was really condescending was how the senior OPP kept call the offender "buddy" as he was lecturing him. I heard him say it multiple times, and they were too intimidated to tell him where to stick his "buddy". On another note, however, long after the OPP had gone home for dinner, another boatload of people left the dock for a camping trip. They were extremely overloaded, even if all the gear were removed thety were overloaded with people, and it was obviously an unsafe situation. That father who intentionally put his family at risk so as to avoid an extra trip should have been caught and a heavy fine levied.

  2. Thought about that too. We got diverted onto that a couple years ago coming home - due to construction I believe

I remember that year Rich what a PITA that drive was. Are you heading north tomorrow the 2nd or the next week the 9th? We're at Memquisit starting the 9th so I'm hoping things will be relatively normal by then but we come thru very early to get north of 400 before the traffic gets too bad. We'll be at the border by 5:00AM

  3. Hi Tony!! How is the derby going!?

Thanks for the help! I called them and spoke to Dave. He told me not to run a board side to side across the back as the boat is designed to 'flex' thus why its so stable. I am learning lots! Rod holders are easy! It's the downriggers that are giving me a headache lol

Keep telling me what I need lol

    Thanks!

    Linda

I understand his point, but I think you can design a board that will allow for that flexing. It the board is drilled with slots that run perpendicular to the gunnel and fastened such a way so that when the gunnel flexes the mounting fastener slides in that slot I think your problem is solved. A fastener riding in a slot. Above the board you have a washer then spring then washer, so that when this is mounted you have a spring loaded board that will allow the gunnels to flex yet can be removed easily when not in use.

  4. I purchased a Ram 2500HD with a Cummins diesel this spring. Never thought I'd be in a Ram when i started my research, but, Ram has come a long way. I love mine. It's the first vehicle I ever purchased where I couldn't find a single defect or minor blemish anywhere and I haven't had a single quality issue in the first 3 months of ownership. Taking our first trip in a couple weeks and I can't wait to hit the road. Congrats on your truck, Your mileage is awesome. I'll be pulling a pretty heavy rig, a 1900 Pro-v and 200 Verado, loaded with 2 weeks of vacation supplies. I'll be very happy with 15 mpg, and I think I'll get that no problem based on local towing trips.

  5. We humans have the capacity to be extremely greedy. It doesn't matter the skin color or nationality. Given the opportunity there will always be a percentage of people who take unfair advantage, who cheat. Western society is ill with the "traditional values be damned gotta get mine" flu.

  6. I'd say change how you're fishing...

I'm assuming here... But something tells me you all fished similar techniques on similar structure for the 3 days... Maybe?...

There are big fish in nip... You just have to target them... I have spots and techniques on the St Lawrence River to catch me big fish... But I also have spots/techniques to catch me small eaters....

200 fish in 3 days tells me you guys beat on schools of small fish and were having fun getting quick bites... And who doesn't like lots of bites right... Especially with kids in the boat... But sorting through dinks hoping for bigger fish is a mistake far too many anglers make... If youre not catching the quality of fish you want... Then move or try a different technique...

My fun fishing and my tournament fishing are 2 completely different approaches...

    Very well said.

  7.

Well let me tell ya a story here. LOL

I have had boats of many types. Tinnys (4 of them) Last one being a 14 ft deep sylvan that I had all rigged out for bass fishing and down rigg,n. Owned Ranger Bass boat for 4 yrs and a Bayliner cuddy for two.. I had a truck to tow and spot to keep all these boats at one time. The bayliner I was paying alot to keep it stored. I had to pay cuz we moved into a condo 6 years ago. I have thought of getting a sports pal or a yak,but no place to keep it.

These float about boats/tubes deflate and can be packed away in a corner pretty much. Both my float tube and my new to me pontoon, fit in the back seat of my Dodge Avenger. My trunk is a traveling tackle box. I can hit anyone spot and fish any fish. Well almost. I need to add musky gear.LOL

I can leave any given morning,go for a drive and come upon a fishing hole. Stop, pull out the rig, blow it up, grab a couple of rods, a plano box that has baits that will work for this spot, and bobs your uncle. Both rigs I can have set up and in the water in 15 minutes. 12volt pump makes it that fast.

The best part of the whole experience of being on the water with these,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Words cant explain it. You just have to get out there in them and experience it for yourself.

May not be for eveyone, but they work for me, and I have a blast fishing from them.

Hope that helps with your question.

    Very cool and great explanation.

  8. Just thought I's throw this out there. I have 4 Diawa Sealine 47's I use for lead. I decided to replace what I had as it was quite old and I found this new smaller diameter lead from Tuff-Line. Being 30% smaller diameter it achieves the same sink as the traditional leadcore with less lead. Less lead means less bulk, smaller gear, lighter rods. Another cool thing is while i bought 18lb test it is 53 lb break strength. The stuff got great reviews, I just received it and haven't even spooled yet.

  9. There is a new store in Erie, Field and Stream, located within a mile of the Erie Gander Mountain. It's almost as good as a Cabelas, in fact it will definitely remind you of Cabelas. IMHO it is far superior to Gander. Additionally there is a Dick's next to the Gander store. There is at least one other major fishing store in Erie but I can't recall the name.

  10. One thing I do know for sure about barometric pressure is I've caught some of my best fish right before a big storm hits when the winds pick up, the sky is black and the lightning if flashing on the horizon.

As for the moon phases, I don't wait for a full moon to go fishing, but I find it does definitely improve the fishing when it does happen.

Couple years back I was on my annual trip to the West Arm of Nippissing with a full moon forecast in the coming days, and one day in particular had the full moon rising at the exact time as the sun was setting and I planned to be on a favorite spot when it happened.

Couple days before the event and shortly before sunset I caught this fish.

Day before the event and again near sunset I got this one.

    061.jpg

The day of the event and just about 15 minutes before the exact moonrise/sunset time I hooked and lost a big fish near the boat. I continued on and was on my spot and exactly as I watched the full moon rise & the sun set at the same time this 50"er hit right on cue.

Certainly not the 1st time I've seen this happen and hopefully not the last, but in my opinion I think moon phases definitely trigger fish.

I'll be back up there again in a few weeks and again there's gonna be a full moon, so we'll see what happens.

Lew, As you and I have talked before, we both respect Jim Saric of Musky Hunter. He is constantly talking about "windows" and musky fishing. According to him, two of the most important in musky fishing are moonrise and moonset. As for barometric pressure, I've always heard that fishing is impacted as follows: 1. Moving from steady to high-best, steady- very good, moving to low- anywhere from outstanding to below avg, steady low- the worst condition. Also, fish in rivers are less affected by barometric pressure than fish in lakes.

  11. Never owned glass but would have to agree that due to aluminum forming limtations, or perhaps better said, the lack of those limitations with glass, the better riding boats are generally glass. There is of course some overlap, but most generally in the 18' to 24' range the best ride comes from glass. There really isn't much difference in weight between aluminum and glass boats of the same length and class, it's more about hull design.

  12. I had a great uncle that owned a small lodge on a Lake Papineau year's ago, like 40-50 years ago, and I was there once. If the same lake it's known for lake trout, brook trout and whitefish. Located in northeast Ontario very near Quebec, I drove past (can't remember the route number) a couple years ago on my way to Lake Dumoine. I also remember in was quite a long trip back to the lake on a gravel road at that time. That's all I remember, but I've tried to find out more about this lake since and there is almost nothing on the internet. BTW, the Papineau lake I'm referring to was off Rt 17 on the south side.

  13. You got it Lew. I was thinking about you guys all week wondering how you were doing. Even though the fish didn't cooperate it sounds like you found a great camp. I stayed up at that end only one time when i was just a kid, but I've always wanted to explore that area. Anyhow, see you in August.

  14. Just curious Lew did you try to get any fish going up around the Lodge you stayed? Years ago that was very good water and we'd (Dad) would get a few trolling that whole length from Warren Bay up to and almost around Musky island. Some big submerged rock on that arm. Anyhow, glad you guys had a successful trip and you enjoyed the Lodge.

  15. You didn't mention how fast you were going when it started to get 'grainy", but there really isn't much you can do. Recognize that the faster you go the more "stuff" is getting pinged from your transducer, so yea, you can turn the sensitivity down, but then what are you going to see?? If you're only looking for depth you would be okay, but whether or not you'll be able to pick up fish who knows. You just have to experiment, but the faster you're going the narrower the arc will be.

  16. Great post Lew.

If one wants to imagine what it was like that day for those brave young men storming the beach, just close your eyes. Imagine you're on an amphibious troop transport. The waves are causing it to lurch and the stench of vomit is in the air. The men around you are sick. Some are seasick, some are sick from the sound of artillary rounds bouncing off the armour. Suddenly the gate drops, and if you are one of the lucky ones you scramble out. If you are really lucky you find some cover on the beach. If you make it off the beach alive you will never be the same person.

I served in the Navy many years ago, but I cannot imagine the bravery of these young men. In my book, heros all.
