  1. James - I had a situation like this recently but with a mower. Big Cliff helped me out on this one. Drain your fuel tank to see if there is any water in your gas. If so, discard that old gas, slosh a bit of gas around in the tank to clean out any debris that is possibly in the tank. Buy fresh Shell V power gas, it contains no ethanol. Good luck!

  2. Like the big brothers association. Good to hear you're showing him the great outdoors. The smile on Payne's face tells us he is having a good time. Sure beats hanging out on the street corners or even worse - sitting in front of a PC monitor for hours on end! Once again your pix are great.

  3. I like the idea of the spring loaded cables. As stated above you can see a cable start to deteriorate, whereas a chain needs a thorough inspection of each link before being put into use. For this reason chains are not allowed to be used for hoisting on some construction sites. 25 years ago chains were not allowed on any site in Ontario.

  4. Ironmaker - To comment on chains I can tell you that 1/4" chain has a WLL (working load limit) of 2,800 lbs with a built in safety factor of 5. This means the chain will break at ( 5 X 2,800 = 14,000 lbs). This applies to a vertical pull. If the chains are not vertical, but at an angle the values decrease.

B S = breaking strength. WLL = working load limit - sometimes also referred to SWL (safe working load).

    3/8" diameter chain WLL 5,680 lbs B S (5 X 5,680 = 28,400 lbs)

The above values are used for Grade T (8) alloy steel.

Also these values only apply to steel chains manufactured in Canada or the USA.

Every manufacturer has their own rating for chain & steel cable. To be sure of your purchase ask the retailer to supply the ratings for that particular chain. Hooks also have a rating chart. Rust, & deformation of the links will greatly reduce the rating as well.

  5. There's a post here about 3 weeks ago on Goose Bay Camp on Lac Seul (page 2 Learning to jig). It's on hwy 105 as you head north to Ear Falls from Vermillion Bay. You will find an awesome fishing report there. See also my report from 3 weeks ago (page 2). Rental prices in the Ear Falls area are very reasonable.

  6. I just returned from Ear Falls 3 hour drive east of Lake of the Woods. Fantastic fishery! Kenora is a little pricey. A cabin for 1 week is easily $1500.00 per week but if you do some research you can get places cheaper. The fishing for walleye, muskie & huge pike is readily available. Long bow Lake has huge pike but you can only keep pike less than 26". I was at Ear Falls for 1 week & caught 60 - 75 walleye. I would strongly advise you to stay away from Kenora as it is like Niagara Falls of the north. Call ManitouBass he will steer you in the right direction.

  7. I would be happy to post a report but, first I have to catch one! LOL!

I did catch a few up in Ear Falls. Also since arriving home July 4 I have managed 5 different trips on Erie. Twice out to Mohawk Point area got skunked both times & marking very few fish. I'm now concentrating on the Port Colborne area. Caught 1 walleye on 3 different occasions.

  8. Thanx for the info Smitty. I just got my lap top returned from the shop. Cost me a few bucks for a remove, clean up & re install, also a solid state hard drive & Kaspersky anti virus. My lap top is running extremely well right now but I'm getting these notices to install windows 10 & important updates. So, how do I "uncheck them to stop the install". Thanx

  9. I'll be painting my 14' Lund soon. Just the red part on the upper part of the sides. I had 2 body shops give me an estimate to do the total job. Sanding, prep, primer & paint. $1200.00! & $850.00. Rather pricey for an older boat. I checked the link supplied by aplumma to find the paint code for my year of boat & the original Lund red/burgundy. Where will I purchase Lund paint? How many spray cans will I need? It's approximately 45 square feet. I have some experience with sanding vehicles, I have the appropriate tools such as compressor, DA sander. Today I will be sanding & painting new metal fenders I recently installed. Thanx for your help
