  1. What are you getting an ATV for ? Hunting? trail riding? ice fishing ? working on a Farm...

100% trail riding = Honda / Yami .... 680 rubicon or the new 700 grizz are Top notch machines.

hunt/trail farm = polaris... I have a 06 500x2(2man with dumpbox) sportsman and love it.. It has EFI and INDEP rear susp.. Great ride.. Never let me down! what a workhorse! DUmpbox is great for Hunting, ice fishing and the 2nd seat gets used all the time.

Sorry...good point. I'll be using it for ice fishing and trail riding.

  2. I know I've mentioned this once before on here but a few years ago while ice fishing, I used to bring my estwing hammer out with me just to chip out the ice on used holes. Well, of course I dropped the darn thing down the hole. 100FOW on Lake Simcoe. Oh well it's gone I thought. A few weeks go by, totally forgetting about the lost hammer, I was jigging with a Williams and "whamm-o" fish on. Oh man it's going to be a beauty I though......not pulling to much......no head shakes.....but heavy!!! Yep, you guessed it. Up comes MY estwing hammer!! LOL Caught perfectly on the little hole in the handle. Still using it to this day. :)

  3. Hey guys/gals......well, I'm looking into getting an ATV in the next few months so question to you is in your HONEST and un-biased opinion, which ATV is the best bang for your buck. I know it's like asking which is better Ford or Dodge but I'm hoping you can steer my in the right direction. Personally, I'm leaning towards Yamaha or Honda. I'm not looking for new (2006/7- 2009) and something in the 500cc range.

    Cheers!

    Colin

  4. Why not just go with the typical cigarette lighter pump? I have one and it works great. If you do have your mind set on the inverter, a 300W will suffice. My FJ Cruiser has a built in 400W and is ok. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to a 2500W inverter with a dual battery set-up for my back lake camping trips. Nothing like being able to power a microwave, toaster, coffee maker..etc back in the bush. Man, talk about roughin' it eh!! LOL

  5. Definately bubblegum. This past weekend I tried some 5" Wicked-Stix Inferno colour (kinda dark orange/red with a lighter orange swirled in) made my NorthAMfishing Tackle CO. Bought them at Tromblys Tackle Box up in Orillia. I gotta say that they worked great producing just as much as the pink senkos. From what the guy at Tromblys said, they're locally made which is great. Still a little pricey at $7.99/bag though.

  6. I'm a cable & line technician (fibre optic splicer) for Allstream. I work mostly in the downtown Toronto core but do travel throughout Ontario. Several thousand kilometres of our cables run along the CP Rail lines so I sometimes get to ride the rail and see some pristine backlakes along the way.(yes, I pack my rod the odd time) :)

    Cheers,

    Colin

  7. I caught a nice Estwing hammer while ice fishing on Lake Simcoe a few years back. Turns out it was MY hammer I had accidently dropped down the hole 2 weeks prior. lol She really put up a fight coming up from 100FOW......not many head shakes though.:) Still using it to this day.

  8. !

I used to see a lot of walleye fishermen in Redmond bay (I think thats what it was called) - located in the very north east corner near a small island. There is a buoy about 200 yards from the island where walleye fishermen would sit.

If that's the spot I'm thinking of....we use to call it "the hump". Great walter fishing there back in the day. Caught many smallies there as well.

  9. Miller's Timber Sands has a few camping spots. Great people operate that camp as well.

Are jack and judy still the owners of Millers....i remember when it was called Leamans. I believe back in the day, Bud Leaman won the park in a poker game!! LOL???? I spent 30 summers over at Jack Lake Tent & Trailer Park. :)

  10. hey Bassman....where are you staying?? Jack Lake Lodge? Jack Lake Tent & Trailer park? Millers Timber Sands?

If you head out from the marina at jack lak lodge, turn right into that little bay.....there's logs lining the entire shore line which is good for bass and muskie (when in season) and in the middle of the bay I've caught several walleye just trolling back and forth. I've been fishing Jacks since I was 2yrs old....lol

  11. I had a Dodge Durango Hemi for yrs until my wife was in an accident and wrote it off. It was a great truck but tough on gas. After the accident I bought an '07 Toyota FJ Cruiser (no Toyota jokes..LOL). It's an awesome vehicle for city driving and off-roading. It's much bigger inside then what it looks. After driving an import, I don't think I'll ever go back to a domestic.

    My 2-cents.

  12. Now Colin what were you doin with an Estwing out in the middle of the lake? Were you building a hut or trying to "hammer the fish"!! Couldn't resist!

    Rob C

LOL......it was back when i only had a hand auger and i was having good luck at a few holes I drilled during the week. So, i brought it out to break the iced over holes so I wouldn't have to drill more. Man I'm lazy!!! hahaha So I guess in an indirect kinda way, I did "hammer" the fish!!!! :)

  13. Born in '72, my first job was when I was 12 picking up stray golf balls at a driving range after hours for $5.00/night. I went through the typical stock boy, lawn cutting, delivery boy jobs as most kids do. I spent many summers up around Jack Lake in Apsley so I had jobs clearing land and installing septic systems for cottages....those were great jobs for a kid.....$9.00/hr..cash. When I was 17 yrs old I worked with the MNR in the junior ranger program out in Fort France (Cuttle Lake)......my best summer yet even though I only made $15/day. Since then I've worked in a few different jobs until I landed my present job which is a Utility Technician with Allstream. I work with fibre optics all around Ontario. I have 2 boys, 17 & 12, and they have big aspirations in their own rights. The oldest one has been working at a local ski resort since he was 14yrs old as a board/ski tech. and the youngest is itching to get out and make some money.......school comes first though in my home........if the grades fall, the jobs stop.

Cheers guys and this is a fun topic.....brings back lots of memories.

  14. As richyb said...run and gun is the way to go. I think 40mins to an hour is way to long to wait. It's different if you're marking lots of fish then try different presentations.

I don't really think the sunny affects the flash of the williams in 100FOW.........under a certain depth it's all the same darkness as per my buddy who dives in simcoe alot.

Quads and sleds are good to go on the entire lake in my opinion...just use caution around the shorelines and pressure cracks.

  15. They were showing open water at the shoreline on the news last night. I think it was Innisfil. I don't think I'd trust the main lake but Cooks and other first to freeze areas should be fine.

The news always shows the worst of the worst. I'm sure they got all their 'spectacular" footage at the very end of the day after everyone and their brother had run over the shore. I know personally, I'll be running my sled all over tomorrow. Both ATV's and sleds were running up and down IBP and BBP today. 6:30am tomorrow can't come fast enough! :)

    Cheers,

    Colin

  16. If you really want to use live bait there are a few shops around the area. Rack n' Reel at Tiffin st & Innisfil st in Barrie, Love to Fish in Lefroy, there's a bait shop right at Yonge St & Hwy 89 and I think the Gilford General store has them.
