  1. Thanks for pursuing this issue. The least we can all do as anglers is support your efforts with our own e-mails.

    Dan O.

    My letter went like this.

After staying at the Hampton Inn in Barrie this past Saturday evening, I was most annoyed to drive down to BBP at dawn only to find new signage indicating I couldn't park in my usual spot. Apparently only residents can obtain the required permit to park in this area. I specifically stayed overnight in your area to go ice fishing the next day. I did shop at the new MEC store and we did have dinner in your area.

I realize ice fishers are not angels and they can be noisey at times but I'm wondering why your Municipality would pass a bylaw that excludes the other residents of Ontario. I live in a sudivision near Fergus, immediately next to one of the best brown trout streams in Ontario. We have a constant flow of anglers from May until October. They make the usual noise as they arrive early and fish late into the dark. They do leave garbage and other unwanted "stuff" yet I have not petitioned my municipality to post all roads adjacent to the Grand River. In fact we organized (Friends of the Grand River) and had our Municipality build parking lots(with garbage kiosks) where possible to allow/encourage anglers in our area. We added signage to indicate access points. You can't find an opening in a Bed and Breakfast in our area once trout season opens. Our pubs are busy throughout the week with anglers after dark.

This problem will not be solved with signage. You are just shifting the problem onto an adjacent municipality. People are now forced to drive onto the ice to park or worse to drive on the ice to an area they wish to fish.

I would suggest Innisfill consider purchasing some land in areas adjacent to the lake so that as the population of Ontario continues to grow there will continue to be access to this great resource we call Lake Simcoe. Why not try to be proactive and utlize the resource to attract anglers? We all own Lake Simcoe not just the residents that are fortunate enough to purchase shoreline.

    Very well said. Bravo.

  2. As of Wednesday, there was maybe an inch or two of snow, not much at all. Makes for a slippery time though! I bailed a few times, flat out on my :asshat: ! lol

    Spikes are your friends!

    Thanks Remo!

Thanks for the tip about Big Island parking.. I hadn't heard of any tickets yet, but now I know!

Thanks for the help.Much appreciated !!

  3. The ice around big island is very good! It was a good 5-6" last weekend so there should be much more than that now!

Always be safe, and check while you head out there, though.

Thanks Stoty....any advice on parking , access ?

  4. Hi All,

Merry Christmas. The fellas and I are hitting the 401 EARLY Mon. morn.We are heading for Big Bay.Only one of us had fished there in the past, never on the ice.Just wondering about ice thickness (sleds or walking), access, parking etc.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  5. if you look for very small lakes you may find some safe ice

but this time of year not many people will want to be responsible for sending you to a lake, a lake like little lake just out side barrie freezes quick but safe is something you must determine for yourself

    true enough....thanks Terry.

  6. Got out on the ice last Sunday(my computer has been down since i then hence the delayed report). Still not enough ice after 3 weeks since the lake froze...snow...snow...snow...i have grown to hate the stuff...on the bright side the snow makes my snowmachine insurance premium seem a bit more worth it...lol.

Anyway...here's my uneventful first line down of a new ice season....should be getting out 'for real' this weekend....YAY!

  7. I don't think it will be at the peak for the opener, but I do think there will be Black flies out and about.

I've heard reports of isolated pockets where they are already out an biting.

Most of what I've heard is in regards to the East and South gates, but if the South and East gates have bugs.... I'd feild a guess that La Muir Will also have Black flies out and about.

With this week being warm, and next week also looking to be warmer....it not a great sign for those of us entering the park soon.

I'd say the bug season is going to be 3-4 weeks early...Ice out was about the same so I supose it makes sence.

For the record I WILL be bringing my Bug nets for the first time ever on my opening trip.

I'm hopefull that its not needed, but I don't want to be caught with out it either.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the help and good luck

  8. We found it slow yesterday as well, never did find that "magic temperature" but we did get a few later in the day.

Hopefully today will be better with warmer weather.

  9. Don't pay attention to the haters, your reports are great!

You're right that anybody who can recognize the river based on a picture of it already knows there are fish there.

Also, anybody who would send you a critical e-mail without identifying themselves isn't worth listening to in the first place.

    here here.......your pics are awesome
