  1. I went out today to visit one of my favourite winter spots . The weather forecast was for high winds and rain turning to snow but I liked the rising temperature the south wind was bringing.

When I got there I found that snow and ice covered the banks which are steep and rocky. :( This was not a safe situation so i checked out some other spots but ended up going back to my original spot. With the application of a few buckets of gravel I had a safe place to land fish :)

I took a while before the action started. I banked four fish before I decided to head home.

Here is one of the four.

The day turned out to be pretty decent. The rain stopped when I set up and eventually the winds calmed down as well. All in all a great afternoon on the bank. Oh and one more thing, puffs rule!

    very nice fish

  2. Started out my day at 5:30 am on Sunday. Stopped and fuelled up and was on my way. Made it to the 400 bait shop and asked to buy a license. They didn't have any. Things weren't looking too good. Decided to press on and check with Dave's Fish Huts when I got there. They didn't sell them. Oh oh not looking good at all. One guy there told me to go to Chappelle's in Sutton. Its no longer called Chappelle's. Anyway they had them...whewww. I had an it to scratch so back to Virginia Beach. Headed out from there on very smooth ice, ice cleats definitely needed unless you want to make moves like figure skaters all day. The ice was about about a consistent 5-6 inches. Unbelievably someone was driving a station wagon type car back and forth from Georgina Island.

The ice was behaving in a way I'd never seen before. At least 75% of the holes I drilled would cause a crack to run through the ice for 100ft or more either side of the hole and would make all accompanying ice cracking noises and VERY loud. Who says ice fishing can't get the adrenaline running.

As for the fishing, it was a hard fought day. Managed to ice about 40 in about 5 hours. There were no big schools to be found. The perch seemed to be spread out. After getting about 4 or 5 from one spot the action died off. Move again and get another 4 or 5 and move on. Seemed to be the order of the day. They bit aggressively but had to be enticed to do so. I kept 27, all over 11 inches. A couple were over 13 inches. Very few dinks.

After deciding I had enough I headed for shore. After trekking for almost an hour to get back to shore I was glad I was persistent in finding a license earlier in the day because for the first time in my life I got checked by the MNR CO's. Terry was his name and he was a very polite guy. The guy just before me probably didn't think so as he had 6 perch and NO license. I heard someone mutter something like his fine was $500. Remember its not worth fishing without one.

I hope to get in a few more trips and reports before this winter that wasn't is over. If the weather this week doesn't ruin what ice is there I might give'r a go again this weekend if anyone wants to join me.

Take care all and be safe out there!!!

    Tony.

  3. great info....thanks.... I got my renewal in 5 minutes today at c tire. The associate said the problem they were having was with postal codes being input incorrectly from MNR.Every time it happens he has to call Alabama,Freakin Alabama !! The database is in the states. Better than China I guess.Anyhow , my CTC is aware of the government mess and had me in and out in 10 with a call to the southern states.

The problem is with incorrect postal codes. Hope this helps.

  4. As a licence issuer I recieved the new LAS equipment in december and have been lucky so far that i am not having many issues. there are minor things that pop up frequently but i have been able to figure out a way to work around almost all of our issues myself or with the help of another local issuer. is this system a pain in the butt? yup. it takes longer to get through a licence than the paper copies did, and we make the same pennies for issuing that we did before.

The oh so fun postal code error the machines are prone to getting, there is a work around for that in certain situations, another local issuer found it and it seems to be working just fine. i wont go into it here, but if there are any licence issuers here that are having that problem feel free to message me (or call the number in my signature) and i will let you know.

one of the biggest pains in the butt is that if we need assistance issuing a licence we need to call the same 800 number half of ontario is calling (the outdoors card centre) as they handle ALL software and licence issues (huge pain when there is a customer waiting for a licence to go fishing the same day and we have to wait 40min to get through). for hardware issues we need to call the company in Tennessee that supplied the hardware. The reason that was explained to me for choosing a US based company for the hardware is there are only 3 companies in North America that supply this type of equipment, they are ALL based out of the US. the company that supplied our hardware also has the equipment in place and operational in 30 states through out the US. the bulk of the problems is software related (supplied by the MNR i believe) The MNR are trying to make a push toward a more streamlined system like that being used in many states throughout the US.

when you get a fishing licence for 2012 you will receive a yellow tag, its is separate from the outdoors card, yes you have to carry it with you when fishing and yes you are still required to carry your outdoors card. For those that both hunt and fish, good luck as you will have a tag for each licence you buy.

since the members here seem to spread throughout canada and parts of the US and also because i happen to have some info here i will also list fees for some of the licences. (as big game licences and fees arent available yet)

  5. Just thought seeing as I have time right now to drop in and say hi to all my friends. Been away from here for a while because we found out about 6 weeks ago that the cancer had spread to Diane's Head. Found out when I took her to the Hospital after she was complaining of a head ache for over a week and did not say much because she thought she had a sinus infection. Well thats when we found out and she has been taking Radiation for it and just last week they did what they call a Sabre Knife Radiation to hit the last 2 remaining spots there. Claim to have 90% success rate.. I hope they are correct.. Will know more in about 2 weeks as to the success of this as well as still taking chemo for the other small spots still in the lung... Well I will try to get in if possible but don't know when..

Just wanted to let you all know what was going on..

    good luck and God bless

  7. You can't really go wrong with any of them.

I have a Marcum LX-5 and it is a very good unit.

The movable zoom and super fine line as well as the dual beam transducer are important to me.

It also has the best target separation and most power of all the top units as well.

I have heard good things about the HBird flashers as well.

I have a Hummunbird Ice 45 going into its second season this winter.Very pleased with it.I's middle of the line but has most features of the Ice 55.... a little less power.Used it for shallow perch and deep lake trout. One freind has got one for this year and another will be getting one for Christmas.Prefer it over Vex and Marcum due to the larger read out.

  8. Hey boys,

Im heading up to Good Old "Sparrow Lake" for a weekend of ice fising. Does any one have tips or lacations that have had good catchs? I was up last winter, but didnt have any luck, hoping for better results this time around.

    Thanks guys!

    Cheers!

A group of us got a few eater walleye about a month ago out in front of the public boat launch/park at Franklin Park.Hope this helps.

  9. Function over form. Back when I was neck deep in the sled biz the sleds were still pretty homely, and the functionality sucked too. They did get a bit prettier for a few years (decades perhaps) but the prettiest ones were always the sleds that were designed for performsnce like the Kalamazoos, the Speedways and the Thunderjets etc. Even the Blizzards were pretty. But that's just a matter of personal preference I suppose. I happened to like the noisy fast ones.

    JF

I also had Blizzards back in the eary '80s.Awesome machines.Haven't ridden for a long time but would love to try one of the new Gen X machines.Higher CG , more power and handling like never before sounds like a blast. To pull the Clam ? I don't think so but most of the manufacturers still make utility, touring machines.

  10. Gentlemen,

I am looking for advice regarding an icefishing outfitter in the Bay of Quinte.

Who would you recommend? We are a group of 4-6 amatures who are looking for decent hut rentals for the weekend.

Last year we went to Nippinsing with Anglers Haven and it was fantastic and are hoping to get a similar experience this year at Quinte.

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Although I haven't yet hired their sevices , I do know that G2 (Stoty) are very helpful and knowlegable guides. I'g give them a call.
