  1. I have accumulated a number of lures that I no longer use, mainly pike and bass stuff like weedless Rapala spoons, older Rapala rattle baits, older style weedless frogs, and more. Instead of hoping to sell them, does anyone how a fella can donate used lures to a club or charity so that kids could use them? Andy

  2. I don't seem to have much of a feel with a sharpening stone either. I'll try it if the knife is an absolute mess. Otherwise I just pull it thru one of those red Rapala ceramic stone sharpeners/hones, and if I have it handy, I touch it up with a steel after. Doing this whenever I feel the knife isn't what it used to be seems to keep them sharp enough for me.

  3. I usually tend to stay away from political discussion online, but I have to say I am really impressed with the quality with which ManitouBass2 has presented his points in this thread and it encouraged me to share some thoughts. I agree wholeheartedly with him.

As a hunter and fisherman and as someone who is deeply concerned about the endless pit that is Industry growth and bill C-45 among others I have to say I am favourable to the Idle no more movement.

I also think that the disappearance of Traditional Native Culture and in particular that of Ecological Knowledge that has been passed down from generations over thousands of years is a loss not only to them but to all Canadians. Their connection to the land and water and their devotion to protect it is something I have always admired. To see that disappear, I think, would be a shame for everyone not only to Indigenous people. I do support and understand the need for Economic growth and job creation, however I think the balance is skewed and it is an illusion to think that its rewards go back to the people. In my opinion that growth profits big-wigs in Industry and government more than it does the average Joe.

I also empathize with those who's routine was disrupted by the protests, but unfortunately to get your point across in today's world you need to make some sort of small impact. I would never however, condone violent protesting of any kind.

I have to say in this case, they have my support because I am concerned about the government's attempt to revoke laws that protect Natural Resources in this country and I am concerned about the disappearance of traditional Native culture.

    My two cents anyway.

"and in particular that of Ecological Knowledge that has been passed down from generations over thousands of years is a loss not only to them but to all Canadians. Their connection to the land and water and their devotion to protect it is something I have always admired"

Your admiration is based on a misinformed belief.

  4. I purchased a 2006 regular cab Sierra new in 2006 and had it until just recently. Good truck, very reliable. But it had a lot of wind noise from the driver's door from day I bought it. Like Moxie said, I turned up the radio. I traded it for a new Ram. Man, are those trucks ever quiet inside. I only hope it is as reliable as my old truck. Andy

  5. I may have missed the discussion on this topic and if I have my apologies.

The Algonquin Land Claim Proposal is public. It affects the Eastern side of Ontario from North Bay to Ottawa. If you recreate in this area or you pay taxes to the Province of Ontario you might want to educate yourself by having a look at the maps.

I'm with Moosebunk on this one, although I can't agree with some of the tactics used by Natives, i.e. Caledonia. So many issues need addressed for the betterment of all, but is the goodwill there on both sides? I don't see it. It seems like even the native communities can't agree with each other on many issues, unless they decide to stand against the common enemy of the government, then the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Maybe I'm naive, but how do you even begin to address the boundaries of a relatively nomadic people living 150 to 400 yrs ago, with no legal concepts or principles such as individual property rights, in an area shared by other native groups living on, and fighting over, or sharing, the same lands? But that being said, if a deal was made 200 yrs ago, a deal is a deal, and we need to work it out. And I don't think expressing an opposite opinion does not automatically make you a racist. The word is thrown about too freely. I know, a lot of words for two cents.

  6. Well I landed a great new job with a major producer of consumer products. Good wage, benefits and a pension! 100% company paid.... Almost unheard of these days.... 2 year contract with option to renew after... Started today after a a exhausting medical last week..... 2000 applicants..... 20 hired... ;)

But however it will be 12 hour shifts on a rapid rotation... 2 days of days, 2 days off, 3 days of nights...2 days off back to days...

I have read all the medical mumbo jumbo about cicaden rythems etc....

I need real life examples of how you coped, and how you slept to prepare yourself for the switch to nights or to days so you could make it through the next 12 shift...

I know a bunch of people work shifts on here so I thought I would ask for you expertise in this matter....

    Thanks!

    G

I did that shift for over 10 yrs, and will likely have to go back to it again in a few years. It's a jerk for me, especially as I get older. I was fortunate to have an understanding family, they knew Dad would be moody, especially on those quick turn arounds. Most good ideas covered above.

    1. Don't let your coffee consumption get out of hand.

    2. Booze can really take the edge off when u feel like crap, but keep it in check, it's easy to let it get out of hand.

    3. Try eat regular, wholesome meals, even tho you don't feel like it.

    4. Darkest curtains you can get. Make that room black.

    5. A regular workout routine makes a difference.

    Good luck.

  7. Your catch limit is always your possession limit !!!! If your limit is 2 walleyes you are not allowed to keep anymore walleyes till those fish are consumed !!!! You cannot stockpile fish and count them as its ok to catch 2 more tommorow and 2 the next !! You can only do that if you eat your limit everyday then you can go back out and catch your limit again!! That's the way it works for whatever area or if you are in an area whith special regs or slots

It is as simple as that, yet I know a number of long time anglers that I've had to point that you can't stockpile fish. I'm sure that they keep doing it. As for as fixing the problem, all involved parties are guilty to varying degrees. I was talking to a co-worker who had a native friend in his group of four on Nipissing last year. They each took home a cooler full of fish. I pointed out it out to him that he well exceeded his limit. He said that the group kept all they wanted because the native friend had told them that if they were checked by a CO he would simply say all the fish were his. I asked my coworker if he was OK with that. My coworker's justification was that they don't take home their limit every trip. (He considers his limit being 4 fish a day times the # of days at the camp!) Gee, I wonder why there is a problem. Disappointing to say the least.

  8. I stopped going to the Big Nip YEARS ago...what once was a walleye factory isn't worth going if the total trip was FREE.....

That's simply not true, at least in my opinion. Nipissing is beautiful water, beautiful country. As far as the fishing goes, I've had great trips and I've had trips where the fishing wasn't the greatest, but it was always good for the soul. If it was just about putting numbers in the boat or meat in the freezer, I would need a new hobby. Andy

  9. I recently purchased a couple of the racheting Bert's rod holders. I haven't used this type of tube rod holder before and was wondering if it would be a good idea to strap the rod and reel to the holder while trolling and travelling in rough water. There are commercial straps available, I was just wondering what others may use for this purpose. Thank you, Andy.

  10. It's official - with the 2013 model year Sylvan will be building pontoon boats exclusively. Their aluminum fishing models will now be rolled into the Starcraft line.

Sylvan has enjoyed insane success with their performance pontoons using their RPT tube design (tubes aren't round, each one has a V bottom) - to the point they can't build them fast enough and have boat dealers in Canada and the US crying for boats. They're really awesome pontoons, and are often sold with big V6 outboards on the back. Ever driven a pontoon with a 250 on the back of it? It's quite the experience, believe me.

Since Starcraft, Sylvan and Smokercraft are all basically the same company, the Sylvan fishing boats used a lot of Starcraft design elements to begin with. Rolling those models into the Starcraft brand just makes sense. But if you really have your heart set on owning a fishing boat with the word "Sylvan" on the side of it, you better move fast. Once the 2012s are gone, you won't be able to buy one.

For what it's worth, I just got back from seeing all the new Sylvan, Smokercraft and Starcraft models. They have 130 new boats for model-year 2013. That's not a typo - 130 new boats. New seats, new deck layouts, new features galore. The only models that carry over from last year are the 12-foot and 14-foot tinnies. Everything else is brand new from the keel up.

Thanks for update. I didn't know Starcraft was linked to the other two. I've owned 2 Smokercrafts and both were great. Upgraded to a bigger Starcraft and I absoluely love it.

  11. Interesting. My friend has a camp on Nipissing and he has seen good #s of fish this year, I found the winter fishing really slow this past winter tho. I was up last week and near the middle of June and I was very surprised how few boats are out on the lake this year. I'm not saying the recreational anglers are innocent, I just don't see the few boats I saw out making a difference like a quota (how is that determined and accounted for?)of tens of thousands of kgs. Not slinging stones, just sayin'. Andy

  12. I was using my bow mount motor this evening and I set it to constant at a very slow speed. My battery is at full charge but after about 2 minutes of constant speed I could hear it slowing down and then stop working. I check battery power and it is still full. It can turn fine but no propulsion. The prop doesn't turn at all. When I pressthe foot control it make one clicking sound (which is the usual sound it makes as the prop begins to spin). It also makes the same clicking sound when I take my foot off the pedal (that too is normal). So it seems I may have burnt out my motor??? There was no smell of electrical fire and there was no smoke. Still turns and clicks but no prop spin at all.

Anyone else have this issue? It is just over 2 years old. It is a 55 lb thrust powerdrive unit.

Anyone know how to get this fixed or where to take it?

    ANy help would b appreciated.

You are fortunate in that you are only a short drive from Rocky's tackle service in Orillia, just off #11 at 10 Braemer I think. Go north on #11 past old Sundial inn lot at Sundial Drive, next exit turn right onto Huronia, follow along #11 until 3rd left onto Braemer. It's a dead end, look for sign on building on north side of road. Call to make sure i have directions right, going from memory and I'm tired. He is a Minn Kota service centre. I needed a new foot pedal and he fixed me up quick. Good prices too. Andy

  13. Hi there,

I'm looking for your opinions on rod holders for muskie. My boat came outfitted with Scotty rod holders and I would like to know if anyone uses these rod holders for muskie trolling? They are plastic but seem to me like they would be durable enough to use on ski's.

A fellow I spoke with at the local tackle shop this weekend recommend down-east rod holders for muskies as this is what he uses. Would be interested to know what the other muskie hunters on the board think about rod holders.

    Thanks everyone,

Folbe. Love 'em. I do use the locking feature when trolling, takes just a split second to unlock the holder. Rollie and Helen's has them. I bought direct from the company.

  14. How are TJ's for towing?

I went ahead and bought the car Friday. Got a good deal on it and needed a ride fast lol and everything looked good and checked out mechanically. Maybe I jumped the gun a little bc after researching the towing capacity, it states 2000lbs... It's the full size wranglers that I previously looked up, not the sport TJs.

I'm towing a 16ft aluminum with a 75hp two stroke. My boat weighs 730lb dry and motor 280lb. Should I be concerned? I towed a little this weekend and seems fine but want to be on the safe side.

Good luck with the new ride. My son and I just bought a used one yesterday as well. Spent quite a bit of time looking around, saw some that had been beaten up pretty badly. Paid a little more than I wanted to, but engine and interior look mint. I would also be curious how it tows. My lad thinks he would like to tow a boat occasionally as well. Andy

  15. I just came across this article and found it a little unsettling.

Ontario hunters' personal data stored in U.S.

The Canadian Press Posted: May 16, 2012 6:35 PM ET Last Updated: May 16, 2012 6:34 PM ET

The personal information of Ontario residents who apply for hunting and fishing licences is being stored in the United States, where it is subject to the American Patriot Act.

A Tennessee-based company won the contract to implement an automated licensing system for Ontario for hunters and fishers, and stores the personal data it collects in the United States.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters says its 100,000 members are "deeply concerned" about the potential loss of privacy inherent in having their personal data stored in the U.S. Natural Resources Minister Michael Gravelle says the firm, Active Outdoors, signed a contract with very specific terms on abiding by Ontario law to protect personal information.

However, the anglers and hunters worry Homeland Security will use the Patriot Act to access the personal data of Ontarians that is stored in the U.S.

The Progressive Conservatives say the data should be stored in Ontario, while the NDP say the issue is another reason why they flatly oppose privatization of government services.

I think people should be more worried about what Facebook and other companies like that are keeping every time someone posts a message or photo on Facebook. You don't think those companies follow where you are and where you've been and use it for commercial purposes? You think that when you use "the cloud" that info stays in Canada?? Just sayin'.

  16. Has anybody seen/have or know anything about this lure?

Its called a Burmek B1, theres not too much information to be found on google about it. I believe its from the 70's

I picked it up at the sportsmen show in one of the bargain bins, as part of a 5/$20 deal. The price tag on it is $30

I figured id give it a try, especially because i havent seen it anywhere else before

I've read about them on other forums. A few guys love 'em, most don't seem to care for them. That being said, I've spent days fishing the latest and greatest lures available, and still come up with nothing until I switch to something that I have never caught a fish on before, so you might as well give it a shot. Pls post a picture if you get one on it!

  17. Hey all.

So I was at BPS to burn off $150 work of G.Cards on the weekend and now i think I need to find me a good worm binder type case for most of my plastics. Any idea what's good out there (last's long) and at a decent price? I just started looking at what I have in my 'stock' and OH MAN, I need something to keep it tidy... :wallbash:

    Thanks all!

    Geoff

I had two from Storm. They were cheap, plastics bled thru them, so I would never go with them again. The best one I have is the BPS brand that I use for spinnerbaits. The plastic trailers do not bleed thru, heavier all around.

  18. Just wondering if anyone has heard or used this brand of rods. Reason I aksed is I saw some muskie rods on Ebay that were that brand. ?????

I have a telescopic Mag Extra Heavy, 9'. It's the heaviest rod I own. I use it for my heaviest, hardest pulling baits like Bulldawgs, Curly Sues, double ten type spinners.

The telescopic feature is great, it fits in the bed of my shortbox truck. Rod and guide components seem very solid. The cork handle is the thickest I own and I'm not certain if I like them quite that thick. The only thing that I kinda don't like is that the reel seat seems a little wide and the reel wants to sit off of centre on the rod just a little bit. I fixed this by jamming a piece of toothpick along the foot of the reel to snug it up on the rod. It can be used for trolling, maybe too stiff for some folks when it comes to trolling.

I caught a fat 44" fish last summer at boatside on it, and the rod handled the fish beautifully. The extra length seemed to help keep the fish pinned, even on a rod so stiff.

I purchased mine at Musky Tackle Online, and it was shipped to my home for around $120.00 total at that time. I consider them to be a very good value and I personally would rather by new rod than take a chance on a used rod for that price.

I do have a heavy action 7' Okuma for jerkbaits, and I like that line of rods as well. They have telescopic rods too, and they retail for about the same money as the TI rods. If I didn't buy the TI rod, I would have the Okuma. Hope that helps.

  19. We fish Ontario every year, coming in from the states. Years ago I would take a few beers out on the water when I wasn't driving the boat. I stopped that practice when the authorities began cracking down. I have a fishing buddy that refuses to leave the alcohol back in the cabin. I keep telling him that it is only a matter of time until he is spotted or checked. He just flatly refuses to leave the booze behind.

I for years had thought that I was not violating any of the drinking laws because I was not drinking. Recently, someone told me that by driving the boat I also was in violation. This person added that with a conviction, I could be banned from coming back into the country. Hence, no more fishing trips or vacations there with my wife. Does anyone know what the law is?

If he is drinking and has open alcohol, you will get a ticket as driver/operator. Here is the text from the Liqour License Act re; open alcohol on boat.

**No person shall operate or have the care or control of a boat that is underway while there is contained in the boat any liquor, except under the authority of a licence or permit. R.S.O. 1990, c. L.19, s. 32 (3).

    Exception

    (4) Subsection (3) does not apply if the liquor in the boat,

    (a) is in a container that is unopened and the seal unbroken; or

    (B) is stored in a closed compartment. R.S.O. 1990, c. L.19, s. 32 (4).

    Search of vehicle or boat

    (5) A police officer who has reasonable grounds to believe that liquor is being unlawfully kept in a vehicle or boat may at any time, without a warrant, enter and search the vehicle or boat and search any person found in it. R.S.O. 1990, c. L.19,

Here is text that defines a boat as a private place which would allow consumption of alcohol.

***7) A boat with permanent sleeping accommodations and permanent cooking and sanitary facilities, other than a boat used to carry passengers for hire is considered to be a private place while the boat is at anchor or is secured to the dock or land. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 718, s. 3 (7). (like an anchored houseboat)

    (8) If a boat is considered under subsection (7) to be a private place and is secured to a dock or land to which the public is not ordinarily invited or permitted then the dock or land is considered to be a private place except at the times when the public is invited or permitted access to it. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 718, s. 3 (8).

I don't know how I got the smiley face in there, just ignore that. I don't know if a ticket would keep you out of the country.
