  1. Hey All

Alot of you dudes helped my big time in the past and you know who you are...I just want to say thanks again!..I hooked up a MG 36lb trust Bow Mount...I ran marine grade 4 awg wire all soldered in place and solid...If I want to upgade to more power no need to re run wire.....Now to finally complete my set up I was told to run 40 amp breaker inside battery box cover...This 4guage wire is not easy to bend and I split my $10 NAPA breaker in half once compressing lid .... Now I found the specs on my unit , the attached Motor Guide diagarm shows 50 amp breaker used ( i have attached link to specs for you to check out- file to big to upload)...My questions are as follows:

    1. 40amp (suggested by masses) or 50 amp (specs) for 12v 36 lb thrust - wire run is about 23 feet

    http://www.nuggetfishing.com.au/index.php?option=com_vfm&Itemid=412&do=view&file=Electric+Motors|Motorguide|F36.pdf

    2. How the hell do you guys have enough room to install breaker inside battery box ( i have a 27 class Seasence Box) and make it all fit when closing lide and straping it down?...

My boat is really tight for space and want to keep breader dry and best place for this is in box!!

IF you have pics that would be much appreciated!!!!

    Help

  2. Finalling finished install...Used 4 guage marine wire 40 am circiut installed on battery box cover...took time but everything went well. can't wait to test next weekend...I will send u pics!!!!!! thx so much!

I feel that 4 gauge is the minimum someone should use for running the cables from the back to the front of the boat. You experience too much resistance and voltage loss using a thinner gauge and risk heating up the wires and straining the battery and trolling motor.

6 gauge would work for a 30lb motor but bigger wire is better.

As you get into 24V and 36V trolling motors the amp-draw is less because the volts are higher.

    A 12V 55lb trolling motor draws around 50amps.

Remember most runs will be at least 30 feet (you need to factor the total circuit length! (there and back)

  3. interesting...so I guess the TSP won't harm the aluminum? Do you think its a good idea to apply a coat of auto carnuba wax afterwards?

My dad was a repair mechanic in the RCAF for 20 years.

That was one of the primary products they used for general cleaning of the aluminum skins on the planes.

I used TSP to clean the aluminum trailer that I bought off an old lady. She had not scrubbed down the outside of the trailer in fifteen years.

A couple of hours of TSP and a good brush and hose and people were asking what I was using to make the trailer look like new again.

    Go for it.

    I use it.

  4. I wanted to give the side of my alluminum boat a clean up as it is showing grim wear and tear...I found the following article suggesting to ues TSP. Check it out and let me know what you think? Is this stuff safe? Do you know any other safe alternatives? I have some nasty water stains on side of hull and want to jazz things up. Here is the ariticle let me know?

    Cleaning Aluminum Boats

Before cleaning your aluminum boat it is important to remove all grease and oil from it's surface with a degreasing fluid.

TSP, available at most hardware stores is a good choice for cleaning aluminum boats. Refer to the TSP manufacturer's mixing ratios.

Before mixing, be sure to put on safety goggles and gloves to prevent irritation to your eyes and skin.

The boat needs to be wet before applying TSP. Wet down the side of the boat thoroughly with a water hose. Generously apply the TSP mixture with a sponge, working from top to bottom, wiping with horizontal strokes. Rinse the cleaned area with plenty of water. Don't allow the TSP to dry on the surface of the boat. If after cleaning you notice algae stains, repeat the process. Trouble areas may require 2 or 3 cleanings.

You can dry your boat with a cloth if you wish, but it isn't necessary.

If your aluminum boat has been painted, clean with mild soap and water only. After drying, apply a coat of carnauba wax to protect it's surface from the elements.

  5. May sound stupid...new to trailer game...Have a 1991 ez loader trailer...every time I launch should I disconnect lighting system to avoid shorting? Also what fuse in car panel controls trailer lights? is it same on all vehicles...currently use 02 kia to tow?

    thx

  6. Its an Engergizer...just bought the boat so it came with it? Reading other posts I think I have dead cell and my be outta luck....I looking to but a good charger and maybe reverse that cell... if not need new battery heading out next week...

What's the brand of the battery?Look for the distributor.

You'll have to find a place yourself,I'm from Montreal. The place charged me 10$.

  7. Got this hand me down Motor Guide bow mount trolling motor..not hooked up yet....As I only used Transdom TM before not sure how this one works...For you people that are familiar with this model or style can you let me know how this foot pedal works.. here are a few pics...thanks...sorry if this questions sounds silly this is all new to me!!!

  8. Tried to charge me Deep cycle battery and does not hold charge....Worked ok before and it seems all of a suden...Did a Hydrometer gravity check and these are my results from left to right cell:

    Cell #1- 1.250

    #2 - 1.100

    #3 - 1.250

    #4-1.275

    $5-1.250

    #6- 1.270

Now this was after a charge and removal of surface charge....Seems to me cell #2 is dead...is there any way I can revive this battery? If I were to use a good 15amp charger like CT Nautis one will this help...I want to make it till end of season and avoid having a new battery sit around all winter (charging it of course)....your thoughts?

    :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

  9. My Engerizer 12v (850 CCA I belive) battery won't hold a charge any more. Was working fine couple of weeks ago and then hooked it up to my MotoMaster Eliminator charger at 12A charge rate...Once charged it says 100% next day when I check it drops back down to 10%....I then checked cells and topped up some with Distilled water...Again same thing....I then ran my trolling motor on it to remove any surface charge and repated process at 12 A then at 8A.... and yet the same thing...Is my charger not doing the job? Will a Natalus marine charge make a difference...How can I reveive this battery from the dead? Final note I think the battery was manufactured in May 2006... Let me know your thoughts..

  10. Where do I find marine 4 or 6 guage wire? - can't find I went to BP, CT, Princess Auto they don't carry!

Will 4 or 6 g regular copper wire work from HD, Rona etc?

Need to know so I can go the this stuff and install 12v 36lb trolling motor. I have circuit, connectors etc... just need the wire. Thanks

    :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

  11. Ok I see do you know where I can get marine grade wire? BP, CTC, Princess Auto none of these guys sell them?

I went way overkill and bought some 2gauge wire from a welding shop. Its rubberized welding cable.

Because I was using conduit I decided to not go the marine grade route. My boat is always covered from the elements though.

You're only running a 36lb, but if you may see going to a larger motor I'd go 4gauge and be done with it. Check Princess Auto they may have some.

No idea on the silver wire whether it'll work or not.

  12. It seems like I never stop asking questions:

1 Scugog and Company where did you guys get your 6 guage wire?

2 As I have a 19 ft run to make should I go to 4 guage?

    3. Did u you use marine grade guage wire or and 6 or 4 gu from hardware store will do?

    4. Buddy of mine have some high heat pure silver wire used to carry high loads in the machining industry? Will this work or will it still get hot as the run is btween 17- 20 ft?

I just want to get all my material and put this bad boy together! Let me know your thoughts!

    Thx

  13. Princess auto has 40 amp circuit breakers with auto reset for $3.99...Will this work just the same as manual reset?

You'll need to take a look at your gunwales and decide what will work best and go from there. Obviously bigger is better don't forget washers if possible and pre-drill the ply prior to fastening or else it may split.

  14. thx

Put the bounce sheets throughout including in any storage compartments. Same thing with the moth balls only put 5 - 10 moth balls in tiny mesh type bags. I cut up an old onion sack and make the tiny mesh bags out of this (use a twist tie to secure the bags). I'll then throw these bags with the moth balls inside throughout the boat. Better too much than too little !

  15. what size bolts and screws do you suggest?

I'd use Stainless screws or nuts/bolts if possible to mount the wood to the boat. Use nuts & bolts to bolt the motor to the wood.

If you can drill through the gunwale and bolt it down that'll give you the most secure contact. Coat the ply with a stain and some carpet and you should be rocking.

I lucked out and got some scrap from an aluminum place. Not fun to cut but works well. I think I used 3/8 or 1/2 aluminum.

  16. Hey Zeeter

Thanks for the tip...I think I going go with the tarp and add some groomets for added tie down...Re bounce and moth balls..never heard this before...so do I disperse throughout the boat? keep em together??

Do you plan to trailer the boat with the cover? If so, you will need a boat cover that fits snug.

If you are just looking for something to cover your boat for the winter I would probably go with the tarp and save some money. Not all the bps or cdn tire covers are fully waterproof whereas a good tarp is.

For my old boat I used to put a tarp over it in the winter with a rope tied tight around the entire boat. This way the tarp is tight to hull all the way around. Make sure you put lots of moth balls and bounce sheets in the boat before storage to keep the mice out.

  17. ok 3/4 ply it is as I have some stock in garage...also what screws or bolts did you use to mount to bow?.. re: aluminum plate where did you get your plate???....thx scugog ur a great help!

Looks like you are on the right track. You'll need ring connectors to connect to the battery as well.

I used 1 1/4'' PVC conduit from Home Depot. I think it was like $7 for a 10ft piece and got a couple of couplers as well.

I used aluminum plating on mine and it works awesome. For wood I would think you would want 5/8 or 3/4 inch for a bow mount. Maybe others can chime in.

  18. I have a 16ft side counsol v hull boat...first year Im going to store outside and never had a boat cover...CTC has em on sale as well as BP. THe BP cover look cheap compared to Canadian Tire CT for almost same price...I noticed Princess Auto has em for alot cheaper and 600 marine polyester vs. 400 at Canadian Tire...As these are universal covers and my boat beam is 68" will these covers fit snug and withstand winter (I will make 2x2 support under cover)_ or should I buy a good tarp and extra groomets and make my own cover and use rubber bunggie tie downs??..Your thoughts and experience would help my out thanks!
