  1. My wife and I were hoping to head out and do a bit around town - nothing yet though. Damned "real life" keeps getting in the way. I was looking at some maps, and was wondering if anyone would be willing to answer a few Q's. 1) On google maps I see the humbler river has what looks to be a bunch of wiers or dams - is that right, or am I mis-interpreting a few bridges? If I'm right, do those wiers/dams ruin the salmon runs? 2) I see in the regs that the Don River has an extended season; anyone ever have luck there? I did a couple of days there last year and caught garbage - literally. Not one fish, lots of cans, pieces of rubber and whatnot. 3) If I've interpreted the regs correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong) upto Sept 30 you can keep some of the salmon. Does anyone actually do that - I know their migratory, but do you really want to eat a fish that's been in Toronto harbor? Thanx Bryan
  2. Hmm, based on the thread header I was expecting a slightly different question/rant. I post (and read) 'cause its better then workin - which is exactly what I'm supposed to be doing right now. I don't give advice, because to be blunt, I'm so bad at fishing that I'm about 10 years of practise away from qualifying as a newbie. But hey, here's a piece of fishing advice, right from the proto-newbies mouth: I caught this baby in the NW corner of pocket bay, on memsagamising lake. The hot spot is the shallow area with the reeds - its easy to find; its the only part of the bay not 100' deep, and you'll know you've hit it when your boat hits the bottom (or you can use a canoe and save yourself some repairs). My rig was a stick with a single-hook worm harness (green spinner) tied to the end, and a 1/2" piece of (pre-used) worm as bait. The trick is to look into the water from your canoe, find where the fish are hiding, and then drop the hook there. With a little luck you can avoid the biggies and get a beauty like this: EDIT: The exact GPS location where this hunka hunka fish was caught is: 46.019274°, -80.015052° EDIT: Why a green spinner, and not a yellow, red, orange or white one, you may ask. Answer is simple - at the time I was the proud owner of just one worm harness. Bryan
  3. That would have been a lot more uplifting with the computer on mute. I'd say that song needs to be mauled, but whitney already did that - the song simply needs to die... Bryan
  4. So I'm going to buck the curve here - I've got 1 rod & reel. SWMBO also has one. We both have the same setup as well - 7' medium action ugly stick with whatever reel CT had on sale that day... I could up my count to 2, if we can loosen the definition of "rod". I have my kayak setup, which consists of 20lb line wrapped around a piece of wood I cut to look like a giant kite handle. Ironically, I've caught far more fish - and far larger fish - using the kite-handle thing... Bryan
  5. Wow, less than 24 hours later and I've got answers to all my questions, plus a PDF of sites and the fish I may find there... Thanx everyone! Bryan
  6. Just introducing myself to the board - name's Bryan and I'm relatively new to Ontario/Toronto (moved from Calgary last October). Anyhoo, between a new job, getting settled, and planning/paying for a wedding I've only managed to get out fishing once this year - for perch, in Lake Erie. But now that all things are calming down its time for the missus and I to hit the water. Which brings up my question: I've been reading about fishing in Toronto, and I see that most people go to the islands (for pike none-the-less). And while that'll definitely hit the list, I was wondering if there was anywhere on the waterfront (as in the mainland), in the downtown-ish area, where you can also fish. I live on the east side of downtown TO, and the idea of grabbing the mutt and the fiancee, wandering down the street, and fishing, is rather nice. SWMBO was reading over my shoulder as I typed this, and has two questions for the board as well (not really fishing related): 1) If going to the islands, which one is the best place to start? 2) Can you take dogs on the ferry, and if so, if there a fee? Thanx in advance Bryan
