  3. JWL, Hunting for big smallies is the best on Erie when the winds let you! Last night was perfect, clam, clear water. Even the Walleye bite was on fire before dark. This morning......CRAZY waves and strong winds. No chance for hunting the flats. Try it next time your on the lake and things are flat.....
  4. The Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine and Fly Max Films came down to Niagara Falls for a visit last week. We spent four days fly fishing the Niagara region for Smallmouth bass and Muskie. For all you readers that have never tried this before, you don’t know what your missing~! Oh ya, and if you fish bass tourney’s, this is way super sneaky way to catch huge smallmouth bass when the bite is tough or your dealing with pressured waters. The first two days were on Erie. Conditions were near perfect, light winds with just a sight chop on the water. You could see the bottom in 12 feet. The game plan, run and gun areas looking for schools of bass. This is what made it so much fun for me, sight fishing! With the Electric motor on high, we searched the flats for the bronze backs. Good polarized sunglasses are a must. It takes a little getting use to, but spotting these fish on the bottom is easier then you think. Once you have one in your sights, getting them to take your fly is another story. This is when the Adrenaline would kick in and your heart rate doubles. Steady hands and good fly placement will determine the number of opportunities you get thought out the day. These bass will spook, it is best if you can make the right cast on the first try. You don’t want to cast right on top of the fish you’ve spotted. Try and put the fly slightly ahead of the bass. This really helped us. I found that the best flies on this trip were ones that looked like gobies and fished right on the bottom. I haven’t had this much fun bass fishing in years! It was really challenging, but very rewarding. For equipment we used 7 and 8wt rods in lengths from 7”11 to 10 feet. Sage has designed a new line of bass rods that meets the requirements of Canadian bass tournaments (not permitted to use fishing rods greater then 8’ length). Presenting a fly to smallmouth bass in a tournament……hmmmm……that could just be the ticket at times. What’s the difference if you cram a few more rods and reels in the rod locker……Trust me, learn how to cast and try it on your favorite smallmouth waters. Small baits catch big bass! We caught some fish deep, fishing depths from 20 to 27 feet. Here we used full sinking lines with weighted flies but the shallow bites was on! and sight fishing for Smallmouth was extremely exciting!!! There is nothing like it, watching a huge bass swim over to your fly and suck it up off the bottom, man it’s cool!!! Fly fishing for smallmouth on the flats of Lake Erie is right up there with any style of fishing I’ve ever experienced, I highly recommend this! This whole trip was captured on camera by Fly Max Films. Lots of high flying jumps and big smallmouth! If you like the pictures in this blog, Be sure to check video when it’s out! http://www.flymaxfilms.com/ I’ll leave the Muskie story for next time……..(chucking 14” bucktail streamers with a fly rod!!!!! SICK!) Don’t underestimate the power of the fly rod…………
  5. Give Frank a call at Niagara Sport Fishing. He's the best Muskie Guide in the Niagara region. http://www.niagarasportfishing.ca/ Take a look at some of the HOGS that his customers have landed!!! Good luck!
  6. Sweet fish guys!!! Congrats on your new PB!!!
  7. Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed this report. JWL; we'll be in touch soon!
  8. Niagara Region Bass /Walleye Report I can’t believe were already into August! Hopefully you’ve all had a chance to get out to your favorite fishing hole this summer and enjoyed some time on the water. Lake Erie and the Niagara River have been producing great fish for anglers from all corners of the globe. The Smallmouth bass fishing has been outstanding this season! Top baits for catching bass have been the drop shot with Strike Zone Slammers, tubes, Senko’s ,deep diving crank baits, Jerk baits, top water lures like the Pop “R” and spinner baits. Having ALL of these baits/lures rigged and ready will allow you to cover different depths and conditions effectively. Experiment with different colors and location/depths each trip for best results. Two patterns have been holding up for us. Fishing for bass in shallow water: 5 to 15 feet (sight fishing) and deeper rock flats/ humps: 25 to 45 feet. Change baits even if you’re catching fish. Example: you get on a spinner bait bite in 12 feet of water, try ripping jerk bait or working a crank bait though the same water. At times you might trigger some bigger fish that are using the same area. Or slow right down and use the Slammers or tube before leaving to look for new/more fish. We have seen this many times over the summer. By taking the time to change presentation and colors, it may result in more/bigger fish to the net from each location you try. Keeping an open mind and trying both shallow and deep each day on the water will help you find and stay on top of active fish. Weather/waves also will determine where you can fish. A word of caution: always check the weather before you leave the house! We’ve been experiencing lots of heavy rain and short intense lighting storms this season. Better to be safe then sorry! It can really blow up fast on the open water, best to stay close to the boat ramp or even stay home if the weather is going to be nasty. The Walleye fishing in the river is starting to slow down. The bigger fish seem to be moving out into the lake. Were still getting smaller walleye 2 to 6lbs at 1st and last light on worm harnesses and jigging with grubs and buck tails. The best depths have been 17 to 25 FOW. Harnesses colors: gold blade with pink or orange beads. Silver blades with green and orange beads. When faced with off colored water. Orange blade with orange beads seems to work best for us. Here are a few more pics of those other fish you get while fishing the niagara region: Man these guys pull hard!!! The best fishing of the summer is yet to come! Get out when you can and enjoy your time off on the water!!! See you on the river, Cast Adventures
  9. It's been a while since i've posted a report, i will share some pictures later of the last few steelhead trips on the Niagara River. This season we were fishing for steelhead on the Lower Niagara until June 10th! This Report is of the hot action lately for Walleye on Lake Erie!!Pulling worm harnesses and jigging has been producing some monsters for us! 10lbs is the best fish to the net with the average in the 3lb range. Fishing depths from 15-to-30 FOW and drifting with the wind/electric trolling motor. With the Ontario Bass season just around the corner, and the steelhead fishing done until the fall, walleye fishing has been the target species this past week! See you on the River, Cast Adventures
  10. Thank-you Troutguy for posting about your Niagara Adventure!!! It was a great day on the water, with lots of fish hooked, landed and lost I have a story from that day that people may want to hear about........Troutguy was standing at the back of the boat when a 5foot 100lb sturgeon jumped less then 10 feet from the outboard motor!!! The thing was HUGE and swam under the boat, giving us a very good look at it in the clear waters.........very cool. Yesterday was the last Niagara Steelhead trip of the season, water temps are now 63 degrees and the weeds are really bad. Time to switch things over LM & SM bass, muskie, pike, walleye and carp. What a great Niagara River Steelhead season!!! See you on the river,
  11. It was great day on the river!!! too bad the weather turned and we had to call it quits early! That was one crazy storm that hit the Niagara that day!!! The Steelhead fishing on the Niagara Right now is off the hook! Here we are in the 1st week of June and Steelhead are still dropping eggs!???! LOTS of silvers around and water temps are 54 degrees, Perfect conditions!!! Crazy......... I'll be posting a report early next week, stay tuned.......
  12. You guys should make a point of fishing the Niagara Region! You'll love, between Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the River we have it all! Year round fishing, great downriggin, big muskie, HUGE smallmouth, Fly Fishing, etc.......Trust me, once your biten by the Niagara bug, LOOK OUT!!!
  13. Well it's been awhile since the last report, here's a quick update! Too many pictures to show all of them but i've picked some good ones to share. May 8th to May 20th Niagara Region report: Perch: are still going good, fishing 27 to 60 feet of water. US waters have been better for us although many locals are getting them on the Canadian side. Small minnows have been the top bait. Smallmouth Bass (US waters Erie): Fishing remains good! Lots of anglers out on the lake/river enjoying the early bite! Bass are found in depths from 3 feet out to 36 feet for us. Live minnows/tubes/Slammers (drop shot bait)/ jerk baits/ spoons all have been taken fish depending on the day. The best bite has been with live minnows! Crazy numbers!!! Upper river is producing BIG numbers of smaller fish, with some bigger fish in the mix: Lower Niagara Steelhead: With the Late season this year and cooler nights we been getting the Lower Niagara is still LOADED with steelhead! current temps as of yesterday were 48.2 degrees. Lots of "fresh silvers" around with good mix of drop backs and darker spawning fish still doing there thing. We getting lots of trout dropping eggs. With these water temps, trout pulling super hard and lots of high flying jumps yarn/eggs/minnows/pink worms all will take trout. Fly Fishing: We been getting lots of steelhead on the Fly both from shore and the boat. Water temps are perfect for Fly Fishing! Our last trip we hooked 17 landed 11! This day was all captured on film by The Canadian Fly Fisher. (Fly Max Films) we'll let you all know when it's ready! Some killer runs and high flying jumps caught on camera See you on the River,
  14. From shore: I like to use floating line with fast and extra fast 10 foot sink tips on the niagara. Works well. That day i used a sink tip with one split shot 24" above the egg fly. From the Boat: Jim Teeny lines, #7, 24 foot 300 grain sink tips Felt soles will work fine when the ice and snow are gone. Good Luck! Cast Adventures
  15. Took a hike with the Fly Rod the other day down to the glen! My "Personal Best" day on the fly. Talk about being at the right place at the right time!!! current water temps are 44 degrees, fish are jumping and fight like crazy!!! Went solo, this pic was taken by a guy walking by...... Egg flies took all my fish. Rivers rockin!!! best bite since the fall!!! see you on the river, Paul Castellano Cast Adventures
  16. The water will stay the same for the day, after 9:30am......
  17. The Steelhead fishing is still very good on the Niagara River! Water temps today were 44 degrees. Smelt are in the Lower river, big time!!! From shore try casting spoons, minnow style crankbaits, plastic grubs and spinners. Float Fishing using roe, jigs and flies can be very effect in spots. Enjoy hiking around and learning the river! Watch out for water levels to rise in the early hours of the day. If you start at 1st light, the water will be "at the low point" The rocks will be very slick, watch your step. By 9:30am the water levels will increase/rise to "the high point". Watch you gear on the shore line if your standing on a big rock to get that perfect cast This rising, falling of water level will only be noticed above the power dams in the glen..... Good luck! Paul Castellano Cast Adventures
  18. Hi Mark, Let's go! I'll work for Strike Zone Slammers!!! LOL We were out again yesterday, (stay tuned for the report) Drop Shotting Slammers in deep water was the ticket!!! MAN THOSE BAITS CATCH FISH!!! For all those members that haven't used these baits on bass before, Trust me THERE HOT! Smoke seemed to be the best yesterday on Erie.
  19. Hi Ben, The areas we fished there was no signs of spawning yet. Seemed like they were just there because of the wamer water temps. The shallow rocks hold the heat from the sun, just like a heat rock for a pet snake When they do go into spawning mode, we leave them alone and let them take care of business. Better to look for pre-or- Post- spawning fish.
  20. Hi Joey The Steelhead fishing will remain good until late May, early June. Last season our last steelhead charter was June 14th! The Niagara water stays colder then other rivers! We still have Fresh silvers showing up every day! Go get'em
  21. You can hike the around glen, tons of different spots to explore. good luck Cast Adventures
  22. Ice is now gone on the lower Niagara. River is super clear and the Bite is back on after a few slower days on the river last week. Upper River still has some ice floating around, That may find it’s way below the Falls. The Weathers been really nice here in Niagara Falls, flowers are poppin up, Finally Winter is OVER!!! Water temps are now 37 degrees. This is the beginning of some of the best steelhead fishing of the season! Fly Fishing on the Niagara will kick into high gear with these warmer temps. Walk and Wade adventures are at peak season. Small roe bags, yarn flies and small minnow are producing fish for us. See you on the River, Cast Adventures
  23. Great news Steve! Can't wait to see the shows!!! For those of you that haven't fished cats on the Grand before, YOU"VE GOT TO TRY IT!!!
  24. We fished the US side of Lake Erie yesterday for Smallmouth Bass (Open Year Round). WOW what a fishery! We started in the Upper Niagara. Water Temps were 36 degrees, with too much ice floating around still. Moved out into the Lake and found some pockets of water that were 53 to 55 degrees! This was the key. Took us a few hours to local the warmer water and fish but when it was over we boated 64 or 65 smallmouth up to 4.5lb! We found the bass in 3 to 8 feet of water! all sight fishing. For tackle we started with tubes 10lb test, 6.6 foot rods, but found the best bite was using mini crank baits with ultra lights and 4lb line. Talk about FUN! See you on the River, Cast Adventures
  25. Here it is.......the HOG show, you ready.......but 1st, We hit the upper Niagara for a half day to catch some bait. While there we made a few drifts with 5' ultra lites. Talk about FUN super strong steelhead on perch rods! Perfect day, sunny no wind, found the fish in 32 fow. VERY Clear that day! The lower has also had some clear water conditions lately. Here are some baits that have taken fish for us in ultra clear water conditions: - small minnow - 4-to-8 egg rainbow bags in soft colours - plastic minnow 3-to-5" - CC Streamers have been producing some HOGS! White/white pink -yarn flies - using smaller hooks, lighter line & longer leaders! Check out some of the HOGS the Lower Niagara has been producing! Niagara steelheading is just heating up! Go get'em!!! See you on the River, Paul Castellano Cast Adventures
