    3/4 inch ply.

I drew the jig out on cardboard and measured for consistency. Jig sawed the thing out and then sanded all of the corners off so everything was nice and round on the ends.

Then a bit of outdoor carpet, some glue and staples, i upholstered the carpet to the deck. Throw a 1x1 underneath that rests against the front side of the front bench seat to stop it from sliding backwards.

Whole thing weighs about 20lbs is totally removeable and doesnt budge rattle or make a sound and is litterally a better casting deck than ive used in some 16 foot boats.

That is sweet, I want to do that to my 14', I also like the side gunnels that are rod holders i want to do that too!. I have some work for the spring now!

  2. Thanks for the response Ironmaker and great point. I think camping would be the best option for me. We have a great tent/setup. We would be open to renting a Cottage/ trailer though if the price was cheap enough.

I think we are thinking June/July for timing as well.

I hope this helps for some ideas.

  3. Hello All,

My wife and I normally have a week away together, always up north and always with fishing in mind. We have been to Restoule, Canisbay, Kiosk, Bancroft, Whitney.

We frequently go to a friends cottage just off the 127 highway. This year we are using our week to work on the house but I still would like to get out for 3-4 days.

Any suggestions on where to go? Advice on parks? I'd like to keep the drive under 4 hours from KW area, but good fishing is key. I fish mainly Pike and Bass, but I have bought a pan fish rod this year to help keep me fed :)

LMK what you guys have experience wise.

    Cheer :)

  4. Best advice, find a tire guy that would sell you Chinese tires. They have HORRID road noise but they are cheap. Past that buy good used ones. That price you got isn't crazy either. Look for rebate deals too.

I buying tires is part of my job, albeit for truck tires but the ideas are the same. I can try and see what I can get you prices for. PM me with size and details.

  5. Hey guys,

I am looking for an area (not spot)to find some nice sized pike in the Grand river, near Cambridge would be nice. I can't seem to always get away with the boat to Conestogo or Valens and the river would be nice to try.

Pike is my favorite to eat so that's the size I'm going for.

    Thanks,

  6. I have a good auto-off battery charger/ maintainer, I use this on my NAPA battery. Seems to do me well. pushes my 14' Tinny with 2-4 people in it well. We troll with it and spot hop on smallers lakes. Usually i charge it after every night but sometimes I go two days without charging it but at the end of the second trip on the second day its dead.

Your Battery could be at the end of its life, I don't think there is anything that you could do, but there maybe a specialized battery shop that could help you save it but it might be more money than a new battery is worth.

I would also suggest getting a smaller solar panel (5W)They are great if you can make a mount for the boat. helps top off the battery while your out. they are top notch to keep the battery moving when you are out for the weekend fishing but that is more so a fun tool then a required one.

  7. Nice report , no pics of the big walleye ?

I forgot the best pictures LOL!! I added them up.

    pics

you are so right they are EVERYWHERE in that part. The second day there it was raining a bit and we took a drive around the park. My wife and I followed a 9 point buck and a little 2 pointer for about a kilometer before they dipped off in the bush too deep. It was nice to see that big guy, he wasn't much frightened by us either. My wife did get to see her first black bear on our way home on the 522. Was only a little guy but she was very excited.

  8. Wow that's some serious water in the boat :D.

Cheers on the release, the big ones aren't that tasty anyhow.

That was after we got it turned around and half the water out of it. IT was so heavy of the bottom I had to take both motors off and lift with all my might and I still needed another guy to help me spin it around lol

  9. Hello OFC

A while back I had asked for some advice on what Provincial park to camp/fish at I had Restoule, Miniskew and Grundy in mind. I was led to believe that Restoule would be the best choice and a few local fishing buddies confirmed that as well. I am so happy that I listened to all the great advice, so I will say this now THANK YOU EVERYONE. I had a great trip fishing was good, the camping was equally great and I was able to be lazy as I wanted.

Our trip started with an extra long drive what should have taken 4.5 Hours according to Google maps took us a very fun and relaxing 7.5 hours. Mostly us stopping to meet a friend to get my boat back, groceries and multiple Timmies stops.

Restoule PP was quite a nice park, large with a good layout. The electrical sites are quite large decent coverage, I would recommend it.

The fishing was great, I was given loads of tips for a buddy that used to live there as well as Mike the owner of the Crows nest, nice little restaurant if your in the area FYI, The first day out I got some smallies nothing of size maybe 2 lbs tops but boy did they fight. I was impressed. The second day out we were trolling for Walleye, I got a nice tiny guy maybe 1 lbs but big daddy followed him up all the way to the boat before darting off. I landed the little guy and cast out again and trolled, about 10 minutes later I hit a monster. She didn't fight much but when she got to the surface my wife and I were everything but calm. My wife and I landed this beauty in the boat quickly nabbed a few pictures and released her, I unfortunately don't have a scale but I was told that its about 8 lbs maybe more. I have always wanted to eat a Walleye I caught but this one was too big and I felt guilty at the thought of it. After catching that Walleye I abandoned the idea of trying to Muskie fish that week. I fished twice more after that day but the boat had 2 more adults on it and the fishing wasn't great. The rain had also started on and off for us, but I was happy anyways with my biggest catch ever.

All in all a great trip will go to that area again, but likely a new lake because why not.

OH and on my last day there I woke up to the sound of rain...lots of wind and more rain. It had rained earlier in the week, nothing much maybe 8" in the boat. This time though a storm whipped up on the lake and I was greeted to the lovely sight of my boat on the bottom of the lake in the slip. I had a good laugh over that!, a very nice guy that was camping on the sites that have beach front was kind enough to take my fuel tank, PFD and misc items out of the boat. This guy then seen me standing by my sunken boat, came over offered his help which I gladly accepted! His wife was kind enough to help me and my brother bail out the boat. He did tell me that he visits Restoule yearly and this happens every time. So my tip for you all. bow out in the slip when in a storm on Restoule lake.

Anyways Thanks again to everyone that gave me tips and advice it was much appreciated and thanks to all for reading.

  10. Pete,

Use any type of plywood but cover it in a layer of West systems resin. (105 resin and 205 hardener) I used them on my boat seats and they have been great all season now. I plan on covering them with vinyl and foam this winter. They have been outside all year now in 3-4 hours of sun a day plus rain and such and haven't worn a bit. The product is expensive but it was worth it in my eyes.

  11. Quite a few provincial parks up that way, as far as I recall being told by a park employee they are mandated to keep a certain amount of their camp sites available for "walk-in's". They will show either booked or unavailable to be booked online. Might be a fun idea to make a list of the ones you like and head out on an adventure.

  12. I agree with Old Ironmaker, buy your self a nice deep V hull. There is a lot of upsides and very few down sides, in fact the only thing that I can think of for benefit of the jon boat over a deep V would be the ability to go in extremely shallow water. But once you factor a motor in it starts to become less of an advantage as the motor will be the common bottom hitter. I had my deep V out on Erie this weekend and trolled the mudline. 2 guys ( 175 lbs and 210lbs) plus my 25 Evinrude and 50lbs Minn kota plus gear. The boat held up quite well but the chop was minimal. I wouldn't venture too far out but it was nice that I could get out on Erie with my 14' Tinny.
