  1. I use Fireline and PP Ice on my "deep water" rods. Really like the superlines for this. I don't have a hut and do get ice build up when it's cold out. I haven't found a line yet that doesn't end up getting ice formation on it. I even used line conditioner last season, it may have helped but did not prevent ice formation. As mentioned, it's more of a nuisance than anything else - far worse on the rod guides than the line though.

    If you have a hut, it's not a problem at all (well, at last not where I fish - maybe in Yellowknife!).

  2. I don't own any form of transportation with the exception of my two legs and a plastic sled to hold my gear. I primarily fish Simcoe for whitefish/trout and typically have to walk out up to 3km to reach 80+ FOW. Some years we do amazingly well, other years not as well as those that can travel much further out and quickly move to new locations. So, you don't NEED the transportation to be successful by any means, but it's really NICE to have.

    IMO, a floater suit and a sonar/flasher are far more important than an ATV/sled unless you have difficult making the trek on foot.

    I've also considered some type of mountain bike, or a three wheel bike, with studded tires. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it would be tough going on some days.

  3. Nothing really wrong with either IMO, but they address different markets.

    St. Croix is a more premium brand and serves the mid-range ($80-$200) and high-end markets (>$200). The lower priced products are assembled in Mexico, but the rest are from the USA.

    Fenwick used to be a premium brand, but was bought out by Pure Fishing and they moved production to China [AFAIK anyway]. They primarily serve the low and mid-range market (<$150).

    Of course, there is some overlap between the product lines based on price. However, does Fenwick use the same quality blanks and other components as St. Croix in those products? Maybe in some cases, but I'd guess they probably don't for the most part. So, personally I'd go with St. Croix if I was looking for a rod in the mid-range price point.

  4. Can you actually use the phones/tablets as a "GPS" on the water? Obviously the plug-in USB GPS is good, but aren't you severely limited with the cell phones/3G based stuff? I have Navionics on my cell phone, but never actually tried it on the water.

    Personally, I'd have a real GPS just for safety reasons.

  5. Never heard about this before, again where are the environmental watchdogs ???

    I just don't understand how this kind of thing can get approved and we have to jump through hurdles to build a cottage closer than 100 ft of water.

    This is a mega mining pit that certainly will have adverse affects despite what crap they are telling us.

    This has been in the news on and off for a couple of years now. If I recall correctly for a quarry, no environmental assessment is required.

  6. I recently had a fishing weekender on the Upper French River and stayed at Bryer Lodge. The French River is probably one of the nicer places to cottage/fish within a 4 hour drive of GTA. I have only fished it in the Fall though, so not entirely sure what it's like in the Summer months. Our cottage at Bryer Lodge was one of the nicest I have stayed at for a fishing trip. There are plenty of other lodges in the Lower and Upper French as well that are probably just as nice as well.

    For our fall trip next year I think we are going to fish the Lower French and try to book accommodations at Flat Rapids Camp.

  7. Hi all. I'm late seeing this post and may have missed out on the sale! I tried to take a look on their website but I dont see any x300 parka's for $99. Can someone provide a link (if the sale is still on)? Thanks.

    Looks like it's over now. They had some "hot deal" 4 day sale where they were 50-60% off (or something close), and then for some reason went on sale again not long after for another 4 days at an even lower price.

    Call them up and see if you can get the sale price. Just say your web order messed up or something :whistling:

  8. I read a lot mixed reviews about Sears when I was researching places to purchase a new furnace. I was still apprehensive based on some of the negative reviews I read, but ended up going with them because the price was lower by at least $1000 compared to three other places I contacted and customer service at the front end was good. Hopefully I won't need service for 10+ years.

    Still trying to decide if I should get a Craftsman snow blower or not.....

  9. Hey Guys,

    Without this post, I wouldn't have known about the great deals on Cabela's guidewear products - specifically, the regular uninsulated jacket and the uninsulated tall bibs

    Last week Sunday, I purchased the Jacket - $129 & Bibs - $109.

    Today, I checked Cabelas.com and learned that the jacket is now $79!!!

    I contacted Cabelas customer service - online live agent, and I am pleased to let you know that they providing the difference in the form of a $50 gift card.

    According to the customer service agent, it is Cabelas policy to refund the balance, in a form of a gift card, if there is a price change within 7 days of purchase.

    To all the folks that have purchased Cabelas products within the last 7 days and today find its price reduced - I encourage you to contact Cabelas.

    Cabelas - you know what customer service is all about!

    Also getting a $25 gift card after I made the call. Tried emailing CS, but that didn't get me very far. Of course, now that I have a gift card it will most likely end up costing me more at the end of the day than if I just sucked it up, lol!!

  10. Can I ask what your total was incl shipping and duty?

    I'm thinking of getting this deal.

    For me:

    Merchandise = $214.98 ($115 for the parka, $100 for the bib) - note: the sale was continued and the parkas are now $100 and the bibs are $90.

    Fee = $3.50

    Postage = $19.95

    Tax = $74.27

    ORDER TOTAL = $312.70

    Looks liked I paid more than I should have, but still a good deal IMO.

  11. I just watched a video the other day, a new product from Aqua Vu called Aqua Vu Micro, The display is about the size of a big pack of cigarettes or cell phone, the camera with incorporated automatic lighting is about the size of a .25c piece with 50 feet of cable.

    http://www.aquavu.com/store/shop/aqua-vu-micro-camera-system-available-8-25-2011/

    I am so getting one of those! Was considering a camera for a while, but the cost and the bulk of it has turned me away several times. Not anymore, that little camera is awesome and perfect for what I wanted to use it for!! Too bad it's not a 100' cable though.

  12. You had me at the butt burger (lol, wth is with that??). Anyway, it's great to see carp fishing picking up! Have to give that a trip someday myself. The last time I caught one I cried....I was about 6 years old and it scared the crap out of me, lol!

    Cheers!
