On a side note and if permitted (edit if need be mods) I’m going too put in a plug for Steve and Lambeth Rod & Tackle.

Stopped in there yesterday to pick up some gear and Steve went out of his way trying to help us. He didn’t try and up sell, showed us what we asked for and when all was said and paid for, he hands us a couple of lures free of charge. Got to like going into a small shop where they still care and know the stuff they’re selling. :clapping:

    Thanks Steve.

    Dan.

I just moved to London last fall and often make trips to Lambeth Rod & Tackle. I agree, it's a nice little shop and the owner has always been helpful.

Just wanted to mention that allergens in general, and stings/bites in particular can sensitize you. In other words, each subsequent exposure will cause a more severe anaphylactic reaction. In many people, repeat exposure can lead to anaphylaxis and death. Maybe not the first or second time, but ...

I am pretty sure that is incorrect. If you have experienced a severe allergic reaction you are considered at risk for anaphylaxis. Anyone at risk will have been prescribed an Epipen. An anaphylactic reaction can happen at any time in subsequent reactions. It's unpredictable as well as the severity of the reaction.

  3. Easiest route with single strand wire is to form a loop at each end using a Haywire Twist. Bend the wire about six or eight inches from its end to form a 180 degree loop. Slide on the fly, then wrap the tag end over the main line in four or five evenly spaced twists, then finish by twisting it several more times, but now with the wraps butted up against each other (google it - there are plenty of YouTube videos showing how to tie it). You tie the other end of the leader the same way, just leave it as a loop that you tie your line to.

Being so light weight, this works great for buzzbaits too, by the way.

Buy stainless steel wire from BPS, Le Baron, or any bigger fishing store. The leaders usually only last for one or two fish before they kink like crazy, but you won't lose any - guaranteed.

I am going to have to try that myself, sounds like a good approach.

I don't use a fly rod but toss out pike flies with spinning gear. I have been using the tie-able leader from TyGar and Cortland. So far it's worked fine, but I haven't hooked into anything >30" yet.

  4. If you are a resident or cottager you may want to read the LKO Lake report at

    http://lko.on.ca/frameset/images/3/KLRFinal.pdf

The details are useful for fisherpeople.

Nice report. I was surprised there wasn't much discussion about the golf courses. Wouldn't these be a large source of phosphorous runoff?? I don't really know, but I assume they use plenty of fertilizer and pesticides. Anyway, that's another topic...

Anyway, it's nice to see the lake getting some love. I only had the opportunity to fish there once during the winter - targeted walleye and caught herring and musky, go figure. I always wanted to go back and try for some musky in the fall sometime.

  5. I like the Kawartha Lakes for my family getaways. The prices are usually reasonable compared to places in the Muskokas, the fishing can be good and they are close to Toronto. However, they are more likely to be around $800 to $1000; something at $500 might be hard to find, but getting a last minute deal is always possible, especially if you go private.

One of my go to places is Muskie Bay Resort on Rice lake. The owners take good care of their property. The beach is small, but big enough for the kids and they have an pool as well. Their rental boats are really nice and reasonably priced as well [which is the main reason I started going there before I was even married].

There are plenty of other nice places on Rice Lake as well. So far of all the cottage resorts I've been to in the Kawarthas, the nicest ones have been on Rice Lake.

My family is also sharing a cottage at Marricks Landing on Lovesick Lake with some friends this year. They said it was a great family place, but I have never been.

    Good luck!

  6. Pretty much BINGO......but when I took a rod building class years ago the instructor gave us this tip to clean not only the handle but the complete rod.......as you know...if you use minnows the scales get everywhere on the rod....

Take the complete rod, minus the reel into the shower with you....and for the handle do as BillM said....dish soap and a light scrub pad.....also use the dish soap on the rod blank but DO NOT USE the scrub pad on it...it will take off the shiny finish....

Doing this the rod handle always looks like new afterward and all those little minnow scales come right off the blank too because of how much water it's expose to during your shower.

Shower with my fishing rod? Lol, I think not.

  7. I don't see how a member viewing a post and not replying or contributing is any different than a non-member doing the same thing. So, to me, it's a moot argument. Besides, the site would likely lose revenue if it went members only unless it was a paid membership.

Why do people have to reply to every thread they read anyway? Oftentimes people just have nothing to say. I'd rather have fewer replies than people posting nonsense to increase their post count.
