Clear water weekend meant few chrome. A brown/orange jig combo( Daiichi hook) made all the difference. For those who want to try jigs.......Don't cheap out on jig Hooks or you may be talking about the one that got away. Spend the few extra pennies and the results will speak for themselves. Cheers.

Fresh from the Gravel that is. Hope they all grow to be 20 pounders.

Thanks all

Thanks to a cool spring some steel hung around a little longer than usual. Managed a few earlier in the month however all good things must come to an end. Can't wait for the first cool nights of September. Have a safe summer.

Can anyone tell if this is a chinny or a Coho salmon fry. Fish had a white mouth. Thanks.

OK so there are still some steelies around and you are doing more casting than catching. Try these helpful tips: BLEND IN and that means wearing Camo type clothing. Get on your hands and knees......Think like a predator and not an Angler. Remember - Angling presure will shut down the bite more than anything else........do some leg work. Get away from the roe.....steelie below (like many others) hit a Brown/Olive Riverwood Jig combo. Happy Hunting and Please remember to let 'em swim.

Clamp-it Clear water makes no difference to steelies however, Angling pressure on the otherhand does. Toss this same presentation (or any other) in a heavily fished pool and steelies spook soon as your float hits the water. Other presentaions that have been working for me are pink worms, White marabou jigs, brown/orange jigs and chart/black jigs. As I mentioned......Leg work pays off big time.

With water temps still on the cool side I decided to hit a trib in search for some late season Steel. A little leg work and the right presentation soon paid off. Nice to see some still around. Fish hit a Black and Orange Jig combo.

Just came back from Tightlines in Pickering and was pleasantly surprised to find out about their steelhead sale. All Terminal Tackle, Waders, Rods etc. all on sale. Good news considering the price of Gas today!!!! Sale is on now untill the weekend.

Gotta love the nightshift. Nice Fish boy's and Girls.

So what is your favorite steelhead jig colour? For me, it is whichever colour is working at the time. One of my fav's is a Brown and Orange combo. Let 'em swim. Peace.

Try bumping up to larger size baits eg. larger roe sacs or larger profile bunny jigs. Dirty water generally puts fish into migration mode so concentrate your efforts in heads of pools, Tailouts and my favorite - knee deep runs. To be honest you, might want to pick up one of the many great steelhead reads available at tackle stores. You will learn alot about steelhead behavior etc. Other than that you might want to find a trib with cleaner water. Peace

Hit a couple on roe then jigs dominated the rest of the day. White sparkle jigs (Daiichi hook) was just one colour that was producing well. Have a safe weekend.

Fella's Not trying to stir the pot whatsoever. Infact I use artificials 90 % of the time. Salmon are a put and take fishery. Just sayin that steelhead are not stocked in the East( wild population) Our steelhead fishery has declined steadily since the mid 80's Anyone here remember the 18,ooo steelhead that passed through the Corbet fish ladder during those peak steelheading yrs? We are lucky to see 4 to 5 thousand steelhead there now. By using Salmon roe(salmon are stocked) we take pressure off the wild steelhead population. Not saying to never keep another steelhead just trying to give alternatives so we can have the best of both worlds. Peace.

Why use steelhead roe (have to kill fish) when salmon roe works just as well. Been using it for 2 decades and no complaints.

So I don't lose my Riverworms. (lol) All jokes aside.....saftey first especially when fishing on high slippery stream banks.

HELP from the Centerpin Float fisherman....

Believe me .....you can't go wrong will an Islander.....been using mine for 5yrs now and it performs flawlessly. Not only a great reel but it is also made right here in Canada. -
Buckster Fish jigs same as roe. Personally I like to leave about 8 inches between my jig and last split shot. Peace
-
To each his own SW. Riverwoods are made right here in Canada and were the first to introduce the steelhead jig in this region. The Daiichi hooks they are tied on have never opened up or became dull in all the yrs I have been using them. Me thinks you have an alterior motive. No problem.....more for me.
-
Skelzwoods I like the Riverwood jig over the ravens...... they have Better, stronger Daiichi Hooks.

Noticing a lot more Lamprey scarring(fresh and old) this season. Also noticing male fish looking a lot thinner. Anyone else seeing this?
-
The water had just primed then the rain came. Was great up to that point. Cooler temps and wind should help clear things up for the weekend - at least I hope so.

Was out the other day when I see a slight movement just downstream from me. Next thing I know this large deer jumps down from the high bank and swims to the other shore. Pretty cool end to a great day of fishing.

Always nice to get a couple drifts in before work. I always find it hard to leave though.
