  1. Sioux Lookout is the final destination for some of fishing. We'll be wetting a line at a few of the rivers on the north shore on the way.

It was a true long shot, but sometimes they work. I would have fed you, but with yesterday's cold walleye sandwich rather than taking valuable fishing time to do a shore lunch.

I would have made it down some pretty nice rapids, headed down river and picked you up near the flume dam. Deep pool below the rapids sometimes holds tons of nice, for the area, walleyes for fall fishing. I'm talking lots of 19" to 26" with one 30" over many years. Fished it with a countdown several years ago and quit when I snagged two nice walleyes. Bumped a lot and didn't realize what was happening. Finally caught one in the mouth, foul hooked the next two and left.

Huge pike also know where walleyes hang out and that's where I'll find them.

    Have a great trip.

  2. Heading to northwestern Ontario next weekend and looking for some recommendations for places to eat on the way and spend the night.

Sudbury - Sault Ste. Marie - Thunder Bay

Likely overnighting in the Thunder Bay area.

    Thanks for the input.

Where will you end up? I'll be at a fly in. You could journey up a couple of dirt/gravel logging roads, safely park your car and take about a 2 mile hike along a river and I could make it down some rapids and pick you up for a good half day of walleye and pike fishing. Travel light and use my equipment.

A long shot, but a maybe............

    Just sayin'.

  3. You can add a description and a picture or two to show people who you are. An offer of lunch or a little gas money or what ever you have to sell yourself would help also. I think if you can make someone feel like they kind of know you then the invites will be forthcoming. There is nothing worse than getting trapped on a boat with someone who cant carry on a conversation or has very different views on the world than oneself.

    Good luck

    Art

    Great advice Art.

  4. For pike I go with 100 lb Seguar Fluoro leader material, which is the heaviest Cabela's offer. It works well for me. Raf, I don't throw soft baits, so can't offer any input to your post. I mostly heave Suicks, 1 1/8 oz JSM w/an Uncle Josh's red striper strip, 5 1/4".

When fishing jigs with 15# pp (for walleyes) and no leader, I've been cut off by small pike, but don't recall ever being bit off by a big pike due to their big teeth that have wide gaps, for the line to fit, rather than being cut off. Just gotta be cool when bringing them in. Keep the line tight, don't horse and don't go too soft. Be in charge. Have an idea.

Don't underestimate the bite of big pike. Go heavy with your leader. Never wrong to go with wire. Maybe using fluoro is like owning a Harley. Kick rocks and say, "Yeah, I got me a Harley". Same with Fluoro? Status and testerone go hand in hand.

Back in 2005 season I had a pretty good fisherman put me onto using a large net/pen and not removing pike from the water during the release. Also put me onto fluorocarbon leaders. Might be why I continue to use them. That boy can fish and he can write.

  5. :D Now there's a name from the past. Thanks for reminding me, Connie. I'd forgotten his last name.

There are a lot of stories about Don Maw, but he and I have never been at odds. Without cause, he's been in my cabin a few times while I was out on the water. He's never accused me of doing anything illegal. All my mattresses have the tag intact.

  6. Yesterday I took Norma to lunch at a local Greek/Italian restaurant to celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary. Next was a visit to Walmart where we visited the greeting card section. I picked out 2 wedding anniversary cards, showed them to Norma and then we headed home. No way would I drop $3-$5 on a greeting card when we need to be saving up gas money for our August trip to NW Ontario. Next year we might go to a higher class greeting card store. #55 will be more special than 54.

Lew, I know you're hanging in there, but you're not closing in on us.
