Pickerel vs Walleye: Setting the Record Straight

So, what’s all this about the “Canadian pickerel” really being a “walleye?” Are we talking about the same fish having two names? For generations, when Americans have said “It is a walleye,” we Canadians have—sometimes defiantly—responded, “We call it pickerel in Canada; Americans call it walleye.” Have we been wrong all these years? Well, the answer is yes.

A few years ago after I wrote about pickerel fishing on Lake Winnipeg with commercial fishermen, a retired fish biologist contacted me to say that I had actually been fishing for walleye not pickerel. He said that the walleye and pickerel are two unrelated fish, do not even look similar and belong to two different fish families. “But don’t take my word for it” he said, “Check it out yourself.” I did. He was right. Who knew that all these years, we Canadians have been erroneously calling a walleye by the wrong name of pickerel

A walleye (Sander vitreus) is the largest member of the perch family; can weigh over 20 pounds; varies in colour; tastes delicious, and is found in most of Canada and northern U.S. The pickerel is a member of the pike family (Esocidae); found only in eastern North America and is the common name for three closely-related freshwater fish: chain pickerel (Esox niger) which looks like a northern pike with a long snout; and the smaller redfin pickerel and grass pickerel (both Esox americanus).

To many of us Canadians, the walleye is still our pickerel. Restaurants still list pickerel dinners on their menus and most stores (including the famous Fish House) still sell pickerel (not walleye) fillets and the delicious delicacy of pickerel cheeks.

Two states and two provinces have adopted the walleye as their official fish: Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (though both provinces admit most residents still call it “pickerel”) and American states of Minnesota and South Dakota.

So can we file this under Tiller Vs Console debates. lol

  2. Our neighbourhood is notorious for dogs running around off leash. Their owners are putting their pets in a dangerous situation. More than a few times I heard the squeal of tires and then the yelp. Those dog owners should be made to run across he 400 highway. One of those dogs ran up on my 82 year old Mom when she was here and knocked her to the ground. I read the guy the riot act. Who do I see the next day with the 2 dogs off leash? Same idiot. Another neighbours dog snuck up on me a few winters ago, I turn around and trip over the dog and I tore my knee up, again. Who do I see run the dog everyday here off leash? You guessed it, my idiot neighbour who I think trolls this site. It' not the poor dogs fault I keep reminding myself. Dogs are dogs, they do what dogs do. Train them to stop on command, they will do that if trained well. Our next door neighbours pure white Husky will walk to the property line and sit and watch, he only comes over if I tell him to.h-They have a mind of there own

Dogs are huge part of my life as they are yours or you probably wouldn't be reading this thread

Stop on Command for sure-Start There--a life saving message

Thanks for initiating this thread Erich-you're an excellent dude

Not everyone is built to live in harmony with a dog(s)-or has the time and commitment

Dog Parks-Off Leash-am all for socializing your pooch--any Lugan--thank you for the correct spelling BB- can adopt/buy a canine these days--It is a big responsibility to teach your pooch

  3. Nail Polish works on a small scale. It's good to change or add a certain color but goes on too thick and you will never get the detail you want. Powder paints are no good for bodybaits either. Best by far is an airbrush and thin out acrylic paint or buy createx airbrush paint. Trouble is that it gets very expensive if you're only planning on doing a couple lures. A cheap airbrush and compressor will run you 120$ and around 6 bucks per color of paint you want. You will also need a good epoxy clearcoat and need to put them on a turner for best clearcoat results! So if your only looking to rent do afew lures it will cost 200 or more to get everything to do the job right! I started into the bodybaits myself last year but I already have all the equipment. I'm sure I can give you a hand if you need any help. IMG_20161116_191036.jpgIMG_20161117_055403.jpgreceived_10156970190400627.jpeg

we paint every day. theres different apps for different baits. plastic, metal or wood..just make sure when your painting the paints will play well. lacquer base paints will ruin enamels.

  6. An update if anyone's interested. The biologist has all the pictures of the prints that I have. He said he wanted the scat but I haven't heard back from him and I'm not going to bug him. It's been about a week since I emailed the pics. I know the MNR is understaffed and busy. I'm not holding my breath though.

The guy that said claws in the pic- pretty sure that's just hair imprinted in the snow when it moved forward.

Like Singing Dog, I'm skeptical too, but I've seen big feline prints a few times over the years. It's the first time I have some scat.

Hey Chris-- a whole week--just kidding -Scat is DNA--am with Shag here i think

My best guess as a layman--There are cougars in Ontario--in addition to the Barfly variety-:-)

  11. I've celebrated a couple of Italian Christmases up in the Soo. On the Eve there is no meat. Lots of Bacala, shrimp and lobster tails and a hearty serving of Polenta, washed down with copious amounts of wine. A Christmas day feast of a roast pig and side dishes beyond counting. I think it took us 2 hours to get through the dinner. To help with the digestion we would go for a caminata with a couple of bottles of wine. Then we would settle down to the desserts

and --you dessert it Bruce--Peace-like many here perhaps-- have enjoyed your reports over these short years-sharing trials and tribulations and Carp Advise -we've met== Fishing for Tyler and........in a world of negativity you always manage to play a positive spin--Take the High Road--All the Best --Stay the Course and SMILE--hey to LIL Ugly
